As her fans continue to bask in the glory of its sales, Beyonce‘s self-titled new album now finds itself at the centre of heated ‘industry debate’ this year, now Apple have called on record labels to learn from the icon’s strategy.

Released exclusively to iTunes as a surprise release on December 13th 2013, Knowles joined its owner Apple in watching the project sell 1 million units worldwide in its first week of release.
In response, the company’s music chief Robert Kondrk spent this year’s ‘Grammy week’ urging label executives to follow suit, arguing that streaming outlets such as YouTube and Spotify are to blame for the decline in download sales, with users able to stream entire releases without purchasing them.
Billboard Biz reports:
“In the meetings during Grammy Week, Apple’s iTunes contingent, led by Kondrk, even suggested the albums don’t even have to be exclusive to iTunes, and that labels could give albums to other stores as well – but not streaming services. Republic Records’ artist Kid Cudi this week released his album ‘Satellite Flight’ exclusively to digital retailers — led by iTunes.
Ironically, Kondrk also asked that individual track sales be locked down for a window of time before allowing tracks to be purchased separately making the album available to streaming services, said executives from two major labels. This runs contrary to the album unbundling strategy first negotiated by Apple founder Steve Jobs with his original iTunes store label deal in 2003.”

We all saw Beyonce’s album coming, we just didn’t know when. She started teasing this album since the SB was performance was announced with headlines to blogs under her paycheck about how so and so artist/producer has heard the songs, she was seen here shooting a music video, the album has been scrapped, so and so working on some songs, it’ll be released here, be released there blah blah blah.
The way the hype was built on this album was genius, but like all gimmicks, people only fall for it once. A gimmick is like lightning, it never strikes the same spot once just like using the same gimmick will not have the same effect.

Now iTunes is demanding this because they want to have a monopoly on the market. Right now they have a monopoly on single sales but lag behind on album sales which is why they want more Beyonce type releases.
Frankly I don’t see other retailers like Target or Amazon going for this seeing that they still want to maintain their strong hold on physical copy sales. I’m sure Amazon or Target would rather go for an Eminem, Taylor Swift, Justin Timberlake type of release as opposed to having iTunes monopolize the market.
Apple know what they are doing by demanding this; but with streaming services accounting for a bigger share on the revenue side of the income statement, I don’t know if Music distributors will budge. This will be an interesting one.
I think all the comments here are focusing on the wrong aspect of the article. They’re not saying artists should follow Beyonce by dropping an album with no promo, but rather they should release music that is not immediately available to stream. I personally think that’s the reason the album sold so well. If it had been available to stream a lot of people would have done so and may ultimately have decided not to buy it. Taking the surprise part out, many artist would benefit from releasing an album like Beyonce. I wouldn’t mind Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole, Adele, Emeli Sande, Kanye etc, who already have a strong following and who make albums not single compilations, releasing entire albums first then singles later.

Beyonce is really a legend for her generation. Everything she does no matter how big or small, is recognized. Kudos to Beyonce for starting a new trend in the industry.
