To-date ‘Halo’ remains one of Beyonce‘s biggest hits. And for Ryan Tedder, the Pop maestro who produced it, the track birthed a level of respect for Queen Bey that continues to grow.
When quizzed about his thoughts on her chart-topping 6th album ‘Lemonade,’ the One Republic frontman was more than endorsing.
Peep excerpts from his chat with Newsweek below…
Were you surprised that she got so personal on her new album Lemonade?
There is nothing she could do in 2016, or moving forward, that would surprise [and that’s a good thing]. She’s super-savvy, super-talented and she’s surrounded by the right people. She’s making the right moves at the right times. And she’s killing it.She hasn’t just done music, what she’s doing now transcends music—she’s creating culture. I always say one of the most dangerous things is for an artist to believe they’re the hit and not the song—the song is what got you here. In super-supremely rare instances, artists themselves become the hit. Beyoncé is officially the hit. Adele is the hit. The rest of us still need to write the hits, one after another.
In a time when The BeyHive are buzzing for a singles push for select songs from ‘Lemonade,’ Tedder’s words are timely.
As for whether there’s more to come from him and Mrs Carter, he added:
I’ll always love [Halo]. I’ve been asked to rewrite that song for a number of artists, and I’d love to do another one like that with only her. Beyoncé’s gone in a different direction, musically, but if she was ever like, “Screw it, I want to do a gigantic pop record,” I’m a phone call away. She’s the only person I would ever [do that for]. I’ve not done anything else that sounds like that since then. [Source]

In any case, we wouldn’t be against another Pop power ballad from Bey when she’s ready. She has a proven versatility that means she’ll be able to sail in any direction and do so believably.

I’ve seen some of the Hive seeming to get frustrated with Beyonce because she won’t chase after hits now, but I couldn’t feel more indifferent about it! Bey’s reached a point in her career that few get to (from what I’ve witnessed)! The Hot 100 chart is significantly different from what it used to be for decades. Streaming and politics play a big role in earning hits today! Every time Bey returns (or somewhere around this time) it seems like Billboard is changing rules. During the ‘4’ era, I remember when ‘Dance For You’ was slowly climbing up the R&B chart. Just when it was a week away from entering the top 5 (while Brandy’s ‘Put It Down’ was also rising) there was a switch-up that was effective immediately, this suddenly stalled the song’s progress and it went from a position at #6 to somewhere in the late teens that week. The streaming (now being counted as units) on the BB200 is keeping Beyonce from adding multiple weeks at #1 on that chart (although she’s pulling in more sales than artists placing higher than her).
It’s so obvious that Bey’s over playing “the game” to get a hold of one of these modern day “hits”. She made it clear to us that she refuses to kiss asses! Bey’s figured out by now that the same artists are being played in heavy rotation (no matter what they produce, while other are locked out – again, no matter what they produce). It’s funny, Bey would probably get a few hits easily this era if she tried, but Bey doesn’t want toyed with. She doesn’t want to be handed something that can be taken away from her next year for no apparent reason. Bey’s at a point where she wants all the control and her destiny won’t depend on the Hot 100 chart!

Tedder responded at the time in a statement in which he said, “’Already Gone’ is one of the best songs I’ve written or produced since [Leona Lewis’] ’Bleeding Love’ and stands tall on its own merits apart from ’Halo.’ They are two entirely different songs conceptually, melodically and lyrically, and I would never try to dupe an artist such as Kelly Clarkson or Beyoncé into recording over the same musical track. The idea is both hurtful and absurd.”

Even with streaming included, none of Global Superstar’s album re-enter. Unlike Bey, she had 4 albums, with 3 being old albums, she’s overrated?Can’t sell albums?

I’ve been saying this all along. Beyonka doesn’t need hits, at all. All she needs is good controversy & an album release… Boom, the anticipation is there for the tour (main event & money grosser). This tour is doing so well, especially for a black artist. And, to that Katy stan… having the highest grossing black/female tour is a record. Females & blacks have since the beginning of time had the most trouble finding extreme success in a business dominated by WHITE MALES, so yeah it is an accomplishment. Hopefully, with all those 134124234 corny pop tunes… Katy Perry can actually gross 5-7 million $’s per-night on a sold out STADIUMS only world tour one day.
I’m convinced that Beyonce will never get another #1 in her country. Drunk in love ALMOST got there. Seems she herself has given up trying. I don’t blame her. When her album sales also dry up she’ll probably say she’s above them. HOT100 will always be relevant. You can’t compare Adele’s 25 album sales to Beyonce’s Lemonade, the difference is too wide. She’ll finally get her AOTY next year so that’s good, and she deserves it because Lemonade is hands and shoulders the best out of all her albums. I’m surprised she still hasn’t gotten to a million in the US, seems the sales will plateau earlier than I thought. Really thought lemonade was going to touch 5 million.
rubbish.WHat are albums if not a collection of singles?I am all for artistic expression but every release needs at least one or two smash hit single to retain interest in the project and ensure longevity on the charts.I don’t see lemonade selling two milliin copies in the states.I am not a Beyonce hater,in fact I want her to win.I want her to have a defining block buster-three number one song-sold out stadium tour-era.traditionally. Not all these surprise visual releases.Music is ultimately meant for the ears and not eyes.So,Ryan tedder is right and wrong at the same time. Neither Beyonce nor Adele is the hit. Has anyone forgotten her 4 album? It was a fine, but formulaic, project that flopped in year when radio wouldn’t play anything but pop and techno.

Beyonce was then savvy enough to leverage her star power for the surprise Beyonce album. The self-titled album had a more organic, experimental feel to it. She went in a different direction musically and did the surprise release to insulate herself from the embarrassment of failure if the album didn’t perform to expectations.

Marketing aside, the Lemonade visual album is a pretty good album musically, and some of the messages contained therein were fathoms deep. Beyonce has refound her footing. But she is not the hit — no one can ever be.
If anyone reads this, they will challenge me about 4 flopping. It didn’t, but it didn’t perform to her usual expectations. It was to her what I’m Your Baby Tonight was to Whitney.
