The Best You Never Heard: Whitney, Jill Scott, The-Dream, & Cherish

best u never 7 The Best You Never Heard: Whitney, Jill Scott, The Dream, & Cherish

This week’s Best You Never Heard feature returns this week with little known gems by Whitney Houston & Deborah Cox, Jill Scott, The-Dream and Cherish.

———————————-

Whitney Houston & Deborah Cox – Same Script, Different Cast

For a collaboration of such magnitude, it’s surprising to note that so little has been made of Whitney Houston and Deborah Cox’s 2000 duet ‘Same Script, Different Cast’. Lifted from Houston’s multi-Platinum ‘Greatest Hits’ LP, the stirring ballad sees the divas soar to new vocal heights, over a soulful reinterpretation of Beethoven’s ‘Für Elise’

In an age where the beauty of great lyrics is almost entirely confined to the past, this is a potent reminder that an engaging story can skilfully be conveyed via song. Indeed, the track features Houston playing the former lover of Cox’s current boyfriend, warning Cox of his hurtful ways. Yet Cox refuses to acknowledge it, accusing Houston being jealous. A divas clash of epic proportions!

If ‘The Boy Is Mine’ had a sassier, older sister, this would be she! Awesome track.  (SAM)

Jill Scott – The Real Thing

Serving as the title track from her 2007 release, ‘The Real Thing: Words and Sounds Vol. 3’, Jill Scott’s ‘The Real Thing’ demonstrates her versatility as both a songwriter and vocalist. The powerhouse singer gives the listener the opportunity to hear the restrained yet gritty side of her renowned voice while unleashing a wave of lyrical fire over the live instrumental.

Scott spits rhymes in the second verse with the precision of the most talented MCs; combining her Neo-Soul roots with her poetic skill. When it comes to being a true artist, Scott is definitely ‘the real thing’. (TRENT)

The-Dream – Put It Down

Despite his inability to perform live, The-Dream has proven to be quite a proficient studio artist. This fact is most apparent on ‘Put It Down’ – the sexually-charged standout track from his ‘Love vs. Money’ LP.

Mr. Nash sores effortlessly through his illustrious falsetto, demonstrating the full capabilities of his upper registers. This is one of the few records on which Mr. Nash’s voice comes close to matching the heights of his enormous ego. Well, almost. (TRENT)

Cherish – Chevy

Though now no longer together, sister-group Cherish served up many an underrated gem in their short stint on the music scene – cue ‘Chevy’. Taken from their 2006 debut ‘Unappreciated’, the track is best characterised as R&B bliss.

The Old School inspired car-bumper manages to not only be racy (with clever use of metaphors), it also remained age-appropriate for the ladies – who at the time were mostly in their teens. How or why this wasn’t a single, I have no idea! (SAM)

New 50 Cent Show To Uplift Community

50fif New 50 Cent Show To Uplift Community In a welcome change to the controversy that usually surrounds a 50 Cent story, it has been announced that the G-Unit leader has partnered with MTV for a new reality show – with a twist:
Taking the “Charm School” recipe one step further, 50 Cent has teamed with MTV to create a reality show that is actually aimed at helping the community. In his new, still untitled, elimination show, 16 young kids will compete to master the skills that elevated 50 from the streets to the top of the charts. But here’s my favorite part: Instead of the winner receiving a cash prize, the last one standing will actually be awarded a full scholarship to college. {Source}

Though I wholesomely commend 50 for partaking in such a show, I did have to chuckle at the ‘master the skills that elevated 50 from the streets to the top of the charts’ part. Perhaps we’ll see the kids talk mess about the top contender near the time for their task? Just a thought lol…

Cherish Member Neosha Gets Married

neosha couple 240x340 Cherish Member Neosha Gets MarriedAfter six years of dating, Cherish member Neosha King tied the knot with boyfriend Jason Lawrence early this month. The small, intimate beach ceremony was held on Cocoa Beach, Florida.
Essence magazine were on hand to cover the couple’s big day. As well as photographing, the mag interviewed the pair:

Neosha On Jason: “Jason and I both had come out of bad relationships,” explained Neosha, “and we met when he visited his childhood friend, who was also my sister Farrah’s then boyfriend. From the beginning, there was something special between us.”

Jason On Neosha: “When I saw her walk down the aisle it hit me that we were getting married,” says Jason, a design engineer. “We’d been in love for so long and on one accord that it always felt like we were married. She was so beautiful it simply reaffirmed that she was The One for me.”

New Song: Cassie – ’2 The Morning’

Bad Boy’s Cassie is currently readying her still-untitled sophomore LP for a September release. In the meanwhile, another cut from the set has surfaced – the Bryan Michael Cox produced ’2 The Morning’. I’ll be honest in saying that I greet much of Cassie’s material with a lot of scepticism (for obvious reasons), however I’m really feeling this. B. Cox switched it up from his trademark ‘crunk ballad’, delivering a sure-fire club banger in the process; and, let’s face it, a Cassie track is only as good as its beat.

Hit or Miss?

Cherish – ‘Amnesia’ Video

With Cherish’s new LP ‘The Truth’ due next Tuesday (May 13th), the video for the album’s 2nd single ‘Amnesia’ premiered on BET yesterday. I guess it serves its purpose, however, having heard the album in its entirety, there are many a single that could have been chosen over this. Making the situation worse is the fact that the label are doing an appalling job of promoting the project. Best of luck to them – they’re going to need it.

What do you think of the video?

New Cherish Promo Pic

newpic1lores New Cherish Promo PicSister R&B quartet Cherish are prepping the release of their sophomore effort ‘The Truth’ for May 3rd. The shot above is a promotional pic for the set. It’s a definitely a case of hit and miss with some of the girls; I would say who, but I couldn’t tell you their individual names if I tried lol. Farah and Fallon (the twins, I presume) are all I can come up with at the minute. A prize for the first commenter who can name the girls in order (…no, really).

Terrence Howard Covers GIANT Magazine

terrance+howard+covers+GIANT Terrence Howard Covers GIANT Magazine Actor Terrence Howard appears in the latest issue of GIANT magazine. Check out a few *interesting* quotes from his feature:

“It’s so hard to find a good woman who’s gonna help build the family and not be so interested in just building herself. I could be like any other male wannabe celebrity out there and hang out and date a bunch of people. Of course, there’s a beautiful opportunity to be out there and free. Why not eat up all the fruit on the trees? But the end result is that those things bring a dishonor to the family, and I will have served nobody but myself. I’ve sacrificed what I want to do for the sake of my family, and that’s what I need.”

“Sometimes men are drawn to each other and don’t know how to deal with that. So they think, ‘I must be gay!’ But we hide from the quality that is most prolific in human beings, to express love. God is love. And we remain in his image. Only one other angel is made in his image, and he became Jesus on this earth, his only begotten son. So why is it that we run from love? Why can’t men look at each other in the eye with honesty?”

Hmmm….

Mario – ‘Do Right’ Video

Mario’s heartfelt video for the song ‘Do Right’ premiered yesterday on BET. I’m glad he’s releasing the Akon produced song in some capacity, as it’s lyrics have great meaning.
It has been confirmed that ‘Music For Love’ will be the third official single to be lifted from Mario’s awesome new album ‘Go! (which I highly recommend buying). Expect to see a video come January.

New Song: Mario – ‘If’

mario21 New Song: Mario If With Mario set to drop his third studio LP ‘Go!’ on November 27th, an exclusive new track titled ‘If’ has surfaced. Upon first listen, some of you will recognize the lyrics from Beyonce’s rendition of the song (from the ‘B’Day Deluxe), as well as the beat – which samples Trey Songz current single ‘Can’t Help But Wait’. Though the track will not be featured on the album, it’s still definitely worth a listen. Be on the lookout for a potential Mario feature in the coming weeks.

New Song: Cherish – ‘Shoe Fanatic’

cherish9 New Song: Cherish Shoe Fanatic It’s been a while since we’ve heard any new material from Capitol recording group Cherish. However, as the quartet continue to work on their currently untitled sophomore effort (due in 2008), a new track has surfaced called ‘Shoe Fanatic’. Though the song’s subject is kinda ‘blah’, I’m liking this. The production is on-point and the girls ride the beat nicely. I’m actually anticipating the group’s new CD; the first album was pretty good and it seems they’ve found their niche – the fun uptempo’s.

Hit or Miss?

New Cherish Track ‘Keep It Fresh’

125905973 11b28ba772 New Cherish Track Keep It FreshPrior to hearing this new track, I had been wondering where Cherish have been for sometime now. After their hit ‘Do It To It’ blew up the charts and clubs alike, they seemingly disappeared into music obscurity – with their follow-up single ‘Unappreciated’ tanking. However, it has been reported that the girls are working on their sophomore CD and this new track ‘Keep It Fresh’ will apparently be featured on the set. I’m definitely liking this one; it’s a cool summer uptempo jam. The production and vocal arrangements remind me of an urban nursery rhyme – in a good way. I’m waiting on that 2nd album, as the first – which was certified Gold- was pretty decent and this track is great.
