New Song: Rihanna – ‘Redemption Song’

Published: Wednesday 20th Jan 2010 by Trent
rihanna-redemption-song

As reported earlier, the Rihanna was set to perform Bob Marley’s classic ‘Redemption Song’ on ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show’ today. Now the Bajan’s live rendition of the track has been made available for download on iTunes for a limited time. All proceeds from the sales will contribute directly to ‘Hope for Haiti Now‘. {Source}

I must admit that I’m pleasantly surprised by her performance. Although I could barely understand a word that she was ‘singing’ during the verses, Rihanna generally held her own. This performance was a definite step up from the last time she performed this song back in 2006. However, I would lying if I said that the high note at end did not give me chills (and I don’t mean the good kind).

Hit or Miss?

  9. whystillinbusiness January 20, 2010

    @ERICA that’s the thing, that was her best and; and, and! That was terrible! She was everywhere to the point the song had no meaning. She took a note here, had what she would’ve called a tune pitched acroos the street were she never caught it and there was just no soul in the song with her sining it. That’s what I have always said about Rihanna, she dont rehears, she practices a song. That was a hot A** mess!!! But she probably looked good! She just made everyone donate by another way…

  10. wtf January 20, 2010

    AND THAT PIC EVEN LOOKS HORRID..THOSE EYES LOOK EVIL AND SHE LOOKS PISSED..I CANT.. SMH SMH SMH…

    @ WTF

    HATING IS A DISEASE. YOU’RE INFECTED, BOO. GO TO THE DOCTOR!!!

    RIHANNA KILLED IT. OPRAH HAS GIVEN HER STAMP OF APPROVAL BOO. SHES THE MOST POWERFUL CELEBRITY IN THE WORLD

    SUCCESS=RIH!

    BYE BOO!

  12. newsflash haters January 20, 2010

    why are people saying she’s not bob marley. Duh we know that. No one will ever sing it like bob, but she sang it her own way, and that’s all that matters. When people cover a song, they don’t try to sound like the original, they try to make it their own by putting their own spin on it. Rihanna did that, and did it quite well. Good job rihanna.

  13. Dave January 20, 2010

    Honestly, that was horrible. I can’t believe Trent you thought this sounded even somewhat good.

  14. B@tch Please January 20, 2010

    It was HOT loved it

    Princess RIRI

  15. Chris T. January 20, 2010

    She doesn’t sound bad on recordings, it’s the live performances where she sounds a mess.

    And anywho, this song serves it’s purpose and people WILL buy it

  16. PrettyIvy1908 January 20, 2010

    I think she sounds ok. Of course, the original is better. I think alot of people forget that Rihanna has a strong accent, and that can sometimes overshadow the lyrics and the song. I am West Indian–so I am biased. I love her. Trent, being a Trini, I don’t understand his point of view, I mean…Whatevs!

  17. whystillinbusiness January 20, 2010

    @newsflash haters, you are so right, no one can duplicate the original but that was terrible.

    @Nicky you went to far on that one, saying she has nice legs dont amount to having talent and a stamp of approval from Oprah dont mean a hill of beans.

    Most powerful celebrity in the world was the best joke of the day next to the one trent had before about Haiti already being in turmoil or however it went but they are running neck to neck! Just face it if it sales it’s for a good cause but she was terrible! and that’s no dislike cause we are not using that (****) word in 2010.. Cause when that word is used for Rihanna it means the truth!

  18. whystillinbusiness January 20, 2010

    @Chris T you know why!

  19. Nicky January 20, 2010

    @ why still in business

    READING IS FUNDAMENTAL BOO

    OPRAH= MOST POWERFUL CELEBRITY IN THE WORLD. CHECK THE FACTS BOO.
    NOT RIHANNA, NOT BEYONCE, NOT LADY GAGA, ETC.

  20. Time is ticking January 20, 2010

    I appreciate the thought of her wanting to help out and raise money as an artist but all this seems a bit rushed and more so of a way to make her seem like she’s doing something fantastic to Haiti, it’s on itunes before the performance, I can’t help but think her label has done this so that she could get a number 1 quick to make up from her other songs not doing so well this era.

    I wonder how many others artists are going to use a song or make a song and say all funds go to Haiti, to try and get a hit record, yes it’s good she’s helping the funds but some how part of her motives with promoting her music for Haiti, doesn’t seem right to me.

  21. Hmmm….. January 20, 2010

    Yeah, she does sound decent on here, but then again she usually sounds ‘decent’ on the recorded track. It’s live when she ususally butchers the song! I try to take in consideration her accent, but she doesn’t have a strong enough voice to pull off a good live vocal performance. There is a clip of her singing this live on Youtube and she didn’t sound to great! So if she is gonna sing this live on oprah, I don’t know how she gonna pull that off! I will be watching either way though, with a bucket of pop corn. Lol!

  22. proud west indian/ caribbean January 20, 2010

    @pretty ivy 1908, I agree with you 100% I don’t understand the trini bashing the bajan, when we’re all from the islands. Why can’t you support your island sister. No need to constantly try to hate her just to make your blog succeeds. SMH at people willing to sell out their own just for a successful blog.

  23. Time is ticking January 20, 2010

    BTW , there’s many other ways to donate people, not just by downloading that song, Try RedCross, Oxfam and all the other charities helping the Haiti relief, there more trusted and reliable, I am donating through the charities, not Rihanna, Def Jam or itunes, using a traffic situation of a way of promotion, to make Rihanna look like some caring angel, some people will do anything to make themselves look like they have compassion, you can’t fool anyone.

    If Rihanna managed to get her ass out to Haiti by private jet to physically help them, then I would give her props, because the people of Haiti can’t f****** watch her on TV in their homes dedicating this song to them, while she laps it up in her mansion after people say how great she is by releasing a song to help, smh ( That’s the reality)

  24. summer January 20, 2010

    where is lauryn hill? she could have easily have done this song (providing chills and all) AND put herself back on the map. This is not to say Rhianna can’t help in the cause. She could have done a lovely photo shoot for some magazine and all the purchase proceeds could go towards Help for Haiti Now. Simply said: Her singing must stop.

  25. hotterboi January 20, 2010

    this is the first time i’ve ever posted a comment, i’ve been visiting this blog for atleast 2 years….WTF??? my ears hurt.

  26. YouPutTheLimeInTheCoconut January 20, 2010

    ^^ DEAD!! XD

    The vocals were alright to me. Nothing less, nothing more.

  27. hihihihihi January 20, 2010

    HMMMMMMMMM

    U ARE SOOO DUMB THE OPRAH PERFORMANCES WAS ALREADY RECORDED AND THAT IS IOT

    SO THAT IS LIVE

  28. wtf January 20, 2010

    @summer that was my first question…where is lauryn hill…wyclef why did you not bring her to do this song?? i just cant today

  29. Erica January 20, 2010

    @whystillinbusiness

    lol. I just didn’t want to say anything mean. So I just encouraged her. Not like she cares about what I have to say anyways..

    @Summer

    Lauryn hill would have ripped this song!!! So im with u too!

    @everyone

    I went on SR website, and she had a post saying that wyclef’s haiti relief yele was a scam…but to be honest with you, he is from haiti, doing the best he can possibly do…All these other artist to me…IMO, are only doing this to gain something. Everybody knows how hard Wyclef goes for his homeland. Anyone can tell fake tears when they see it, but this dudes eyes was bloody red…come on now, anyone WOULD be heartbroken if a place they were from and people they knew were killed by the masses, who are we to worry about if it’s a scam or not when there are so many other scams such as THIS HOT MESS!

    I wouldn’t buy this song rihanna is singing b/c Bob marley already did it. If they wanted to dedicate this to haiti, they should have just did a video with Bob Marley’s song playing..but you know what…they use disasters like this for beneficial gain, and its sad.

  30. MushyLove_1992 January 20, 2010

    I don’t like it. This song has so much potential, but the wrong person is singing it. Just like her album. It had the oppurtunity to be epic, but her voice messed that up.

    @Time is ticking
    Never thought about that. Good point.

  31. MushyLove_1992 January 20, 2010

    @Erica

    I was thinking the same thing. They should’ve just made a video with his song playing instead of someone resinging it. This is not good at all. But all we can hope for right now is that Haiti finds PEACE.

  32. 12345 January 20, 2010

    rofl, she can give all her money for benefits, she can save the world but these c**** will always have a excuse to hate on her, everyone knows no one should ever pick this song and do a cover but she did it, and you cant say it is bad because it wasnt, she has an interesting and different voice, you wont admit it but I bet you are all going to jam this song on your IPod.

    lovely photo, lovely song, thumbs up to her, if she didnt have ability back then, she is definetely working on that and we just have to give her props

  33. florida_girl January 20, 2010

    WTF and Erica….well said

    WtF what was that wanabe Mariah note at the end? Horrid!

  36. anonymouss January 20, 2010

    rihanna is more pop than lauryn so obviously she gon get more ppl to donate $
    thats why they chose her.

  37. 2bad2bme January 20, 2010

    YOU ALL HATE ON RIHANNA SOOO MUCH AND HATE TO ADMITT WHEN SHE SOUNDS GOOD…HATERS

  38. SOOS January 20, 2010

    AWFUL 🙁

    She has gone –_–

    I’m not a hater kind, and i have no problem with the girl personally, she is just not a singer at all. She should search a new job.

  39. KingMo January 20, 2010

    It wasnt horrible but it was FAR from great. She sounds like…….Rihanna. They gave her the song of a legend and she definitely didn’t do it justice.
    Plus, the picture isn’t suitable…she looks angry and demented. lol. They should’ve used a softer picture.
    But I’m glad it’s for a good cause.

  40. PaperTraill January 20, 2010

    I don’t dislike Rihanna but, she is not my favorite artist right know. Rihanna has never sang a song that has touched me or made me emotional. Ballads are not her MO. This is a great song but, the wrong song to for this type of event. This song is about uplifting yourself from an Oppressor.

  41. Travis January 20, 2010

    Ok…ummmm, yeah,
    Try again Rihanna. That was bad. And that high note at the end was just horrible.

  42. TRUTH January 20, 2010

    MEHHHHH!!!!! SHE NEEDED A TAKE 2 OR 3 OR 4, 5, 6… SOUNDS AWFUL. NO ONE DOES IT LIKE MARLEY. SHE SINGS IT LIKE ANY AVERAGE COULD. NOTHING UNIQUE OR SPECIAL. SMFH.

  43. Raychel January 20, 2010

    This wasnt horrible at all. the high note wasnt bad either…
    just because rihanna dosent have a voice like mariah and does all these rifts and vibrato dosent mean she cant sing
    it wasnt horrible
    I mean most of these people must not know anything about singing, because she was on pitch. and the high note was on pitch.
    sam and trent think singers are people who have soul, and do lots of runs, and use heavy vibrato.
    not all singers are like that
    that dosent make them less of a singer if they cant do what others can with their voice. they still have something unique that noone can touch. thats why @mushylove I cant appreciate your statement because rihanna has a unique voice that not everyone can copy, and the songs that she sung on that album were fit for her voice. no other singer can establish what rihanna presented in the songs. she has a unique voice and the songs were made just for her. another singer can try to cover it but will end up changing the whole style of the song because its meant for rihanna, not their singing style…

    rihanna can do things with her voice some cant. she’s not tiffany evans, or beyonce, and people need to get that. she has her own voice. just because she dosent have the “soul” factor dosent mean she cant sing. thats just not how she sings. people arent going to have the voice that others do! trent and sam and most of you cant accept that. I dont think anyone will ever be able to

  44. whystillinbusiness January 20, 2010

    @wtf I was over on another site and I like what you said so I brought it over here cause I’m tired of people saying we **** you know who! But I thought this was a good read anyway..

    Ok so how do you think beyonce or chris brown fans feel when you rihanna stans come up in a Bey or CB talking s*** about both of them? Me? I could really care less cause I stan for NO ONE. I just like good music. I dont go crazy If I see someone talk trash about another artist. And nor do I talk trash about another artist (except for a few jokes but its only for fun..not for hate).

    People are always going to have a different opinion than you. And as long as you come into one of these post there is going to be some one who says that they don’t think Rihanna can sing. what YOU can do is get over it cause you know how you feel about Rihanna and that is all that should matter. Stop being such a freaking baby.

    That’s the main thing and that is GOOD MUSIC and that is one thing that dont come from her mouth when singing without help. It’s funny though the only argument she causes is about her singing..

  45. Jas January 20, 2010

    this no talent b**** can’t sing at all lol!!! go be a cover girl,…thats the only thing she can do

  46. Its Me Again January 20, 2010

    All I can say is she looks beautiful in that picture…

  47. MushyLove_1992 January 20, 2010

    I appreciate people saying Rihanna has her own style, but when I ask them whats her style they can’t even tell me. Thats the problem I have.

  48. Raychel January 20, 2010

    @whystill
    Yes, I get that
    but when people say that what they say is the truth…it bothers me.
    its your opinion, that CANT be proven.
    so if you think rihanna isnt a good singer, thats alright…
    but when you try to throw it in peoples faces that rihanna cant sing and that its a fact I dont like it, and I dont understand.
    And thats not just for rihanna, its for any artist…
    You can voice your opinion, but when someone dissagrees, dont go saying that your notion is a fact, because it isnt.

  49. mez January 20, 2010

    great job my caribbean queen Rihanna…

  50. anonymo January 20, 2010

    She should have left that alone, (as usual) she showed no passion for this beautiful song. The only other rendition of the song I like, apart from Bob’s himself, is the Lauryn Hill one (BTW Lauryn is Bob’s daughter-in-law): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hwNlQRvV-b4

  51. nikki January 20, 2010

    she did ok she held her own to the best of HER vocal talent with that said it’s for funds so i’m glad she did it

  52. Raychel January 20, 2010

    @mushylove
    Im a singer, so I can tell you.
    rihanna has a voice style of a carriebian
    her voice mainly fits into the reggae style of voice.
    thats why, when she sings other genres she dosent sound that good.
    like me, Im mainly a jazz vocalist
    so when I try to sing r&b soul, I wont sound as good
    because it isnt what my voice is comfertable with singing.
    and it isnt what Im as good at.

  53. mez January 20, 2010

    great job Rihanna …

  54. DizzyGuy1985 January 20, 2010

    When Lauryn Hill redid this with Ziggy Marley I think…it was off the charts. Ri Ri can’t sing.

    I just watched this performance right now on Oprah and this actually sounds better than it did on TV. I think they touched it up for sales but on TV she sounded a little more raspier, iono. But she looked pretty. It was hard to listen at times, but it’s for a good cause so ya’ll put your indifferent views aside and focus on the cause for Haiti…

    Beyonce’s Vocal Profile

    Beyonce has been classified as a Dramatic Mezzo-Soprano because of the strength and power of her singing voice. She is also capable of employing high and fast melismas and this technique is a unique feature to her sound. She has been hailed frequently by the media as one of the best contemporary pop singers. In Cove Magazine’s countdown of the 100 Most Outstanding Pop Vocals of all time, she was placed at number #7 (just 1 place behind Whitney Houston) and given a mark of 48/50 for her vocal capabilities

    Voice type: Dramatic Mezzo-Soprano (possibly classified as a full or Wagnerian soprano)
    Highest notes: D6 , E6, possible F6
    Lowest notes: C3, D3
    Vocal range: (approx) 3.5 octaves (C3-E6)

  79. summer January 21, 2010

    for all of you addressing the “haters”…a category I and some others supposedly fall in…let’s be clear on why we have the opinons we do of Rhianna. Vocally, she is subpar at best. Compare her to artists such as whitney houston, jennifer hudson, lauryn hill, mariah carey (on her good days) and beyonce knowles…and you’ll see that VOCALLY she is no match. She has no range and lacks depth in her singing. (yes, my opinion, but also the MAJORITY opinion). What we’ve all been seduced by is her beauty and the fact that she’s an amazing canvas for stylists to work their magic on. As both a lover of music and a consumer, i am ENTITLED to voice my opinion (as you are as well). You don’t like what we say about Rhianna, then instead of attacking us and calling us “haters”, provide a better defense on why you think Rhianna is a great singer. I would suggest that you broaden your music collections…pick through your parents’ collections…and familiarize yourselves with quality music and vocal skill. Demand better! And kudos to Rhianna for helping in the effort, albeit her poor vocals. xoxo

  80. newsflash haters January 21, 2010

    @summer why compare rihanna to those others you’ve mentioned. She can only be her. ANd in everything, there is going to always be someone who can do it better. Beyonce sings well, Etta james sings better, Jazmine sullivan sings well, Fantasia sings better, Melonie Fiona sings well, Jennifer Hudson Sings better. Keyshia cole sings well, Monica sings better. YOu get my drift, there is alway going to be someone who can do it better so why compare. Rihanna is in her own lane, and they are in theres. Some people appreciate her voice, and some don’t that’s okay. SOme people appreciate beyonce, and some don’t .. That’s okay. Some people appreciate Britney and Some don’t and that’s okay. Every one is not going to like every single artist, and music is appreciated by the differences each artist have. would there be a music industry if they all sounded alike.? Rihanna sounds good on the songs she sings and beyonce sounds good on hers. Beyonce killed it on Single ladies, and rihanna would not sound good singing it. Rihanna killed it on Disturbia, and Beyonce would not sound good singing that. SO each artist has their own role to play, so why don’t you guys lay off of rihanna and let her entertain those of us who love and appreciate her work. and btw we are not calling you guys haters just because you don’t like her sound, but when you go on to attack her calling her all kinds of names, and really being nasty with it, then you have entered hater territory. I doubt anyone would call someone a hater if they simply came on and said. You know I am not feeling this rendition of redemption song and left it at that. But to go further and attack her person is being a hater straight up.

  81. summer January 21, 2010

    I agree NEWSFLASH HATERS, no one should attack anyone’s character without knowing them…and none of my comments have been that. What I attacked are her vocal skills and I standby that. I have a standard (based on what pleases my ear and the quality of music I grew up on). IF Britney Spears is the bar you set for good quality music then I expect you to absolutely adore Rhianna. I’m not attacking you for it. You are entitled to gush about how wonderful an artist she is. I’m not telling you to shut up. And I don’t want to be told the same. What Grape Juice has provided for us in an outlet to say how we feel about artists. Some of us will “hate”, some of us will disagree and others will be loyal. I’m just saying be intelligent about it. Instead of trying to censor us from how we feel, I would suggest not reading the comment section at all. Or better yet, post your comment and read it over and over since that’s the only one that matters. This is not to you personally but to everyone with an opinion. xoxo
