Hmm. It’s probably best to get the ‘good’ out of the way first. Ms. Fenty did indeed look every part the ‘rockstar’ we’re being told she’s supposed to be. Additionally, this Bajan model must get props for upping her swagger on stage.
However, despite the slightly better stage presence, Rihanna – as a live performer, is like watching a plate spin in the microwave for 3 minutes. Not the business.
What’s more, it’s impossible to ignore the billy-goat bleating ol’ RiRi was doing into that poor mic. Folk can defend her with all the vigour they choose, yet it doesn’t take away the fact that those vocals were undeniably criminal – cracking at many a point during that performance.
Yet she’s supposedly a ‘rockstar’….ok.

Hey Sam.. did she tape that performance earlier and then they play it for the broadcast of the show? I don’t remember Seacrest speaking to her before or after the performance. Her performance was good but at the end when she was playing her guitar, her track was playing really loud and for a second I was confused on who the hell was singing because she didn’t have a mic anymore. It was stll her on the track but that track was so loud. I think this is probably one of her better performances ( and yes I know she was a little off toward the end of the song).

RiRi shamed the music industry lastnite. She looked like a star but was the worst singer that took the stage lastnite. I think it was a bad move to put her on American Idol when she doesn’t even sing better than the mediocre wannabes on the show. She may look like a star but Ri has a very lazy, tired, amateur performance style that makes me sick knowing that a brilliant performer like Chris Brown took a career hit while we gotta put up with this sh–. She looked great but the song and performance were absolutely atrocious.
I’m disappointed Sam didn’t mention the fake guitar playing. That was the point of that performance that pretty much encapsulates the secret of Rihanna and her success. Posturing and posing while other people with talent and resources back her.
And yes, the vocals were the worst I’ve heard from her in a while. I think she’s getting even more complacent (arrogant) about her popularity and her “hard”ness. She’s putting even less effort into her performing and more on her “swagger”.
Even the outfit, which is usually her fortay, was unimaginative and very reminicent of the outfit she wore for her AMA performance last year.
The song is simple and mediocre.

Like it or not Rhianna is huge here. She came here last year with Jay z, beyonce, Chris brown, etc to perform. They are all huge stars here.
rihanna rocked in her performance, she looked hot in that body suit. And her vocals were clear and crisp. Loved her bringing a little spin to things to show that just when you guys think you have rihanna squarely in a box, she comes out and show you a thing or two. That black guitar touch to the whole thing was unexpected and cool. Go ri ri show them why you are versatile and could do all genres of music. She did actually play a few notes, and I won’t be surpised if she will go more indepth with her guitar skills on her tour.

The performance started out good [vocally] but then got boring and fragile and awkward….She doesn’t suck, she’s just not a LIVE singer….She’s an ENTERTAINER…but then again…she rarely does that..unless walking around scantily clad and making s*** facial expressions is her definition of ENTERTAINMENT. I think GAGA is starting to have some cross over appeal, especially after her collaboration with Beyonce. Alejandro is also spanish-themed, so I think it’ll appeal to everyone. Whereas Rockstar 101 is a really dated song. I don’t think many people are feeling it………the whole idea of a pop star singing about being a bad girl and living like a Rockstar, you have to admit is really lame. Pretending to play the guitar when you can’t is also super lame. This whole rockstar thing is sooooo 2008-2009.
Rihanna could have also made and amazing video for Cold Case love, Te Amo or Photographs. Don’t you think it would be better to strip her down to a minimal look, something like Beyonce’s ‘Flaws and All’ video? People are tiring off all of this crap she’s wearing and doing. Her lazy performances aren’t helping either.
I know people complained about Rude Boy, but this, this is even worse! She actually made an effort in the Rude Boy video, and that was just a plain great song and a colorful video….so I think it was successful because of that. Lazy performances p*** me off, but i would be even more mad if I was a huge fan or bought tickets to that concert.

Her second album A girl like me #1 album in Canada. And GGGB #1 album in 10 european countries. Also Her first album debuted in the top 10, and gave her her first top 10 hit. #2 on the charts to be specific pon de replay. The fame by lady gaga only sold 46,00 in the first week and debut at #17. Also rihanna’s second album a girl like me gave her her #1 hit SOS. and all of that happened before she had a hair cut and changed her looks as you say. So rihanna also was a success right out of the gate with her first album as well.

rihanna was looking hot last night. That body was on point… And her performance was something I would never expect to see from rihanna. Rocking it out on a black guitar. Wow, she has impressed me. Go on girl.
She looked AMAZING! Her body is ridic! I actually like Rockstar 101 but I like it more listening to the record instead of this performance. I thought the band would kill it but they didn’t do as great as I thought they would. I must say she has definitely developed better stage presence! But I think that’s where it ends. Of course the vocals were terrible as usual and the guitar section was the fakest ish I’ve ever seen! WTF??? She looked extremely awkward and um, pretty lame attempting to play two notes on a guitar! I mean it was visually stunning because of the fashion and props because Def Jam throws a tremendous amount of money into her and her performances. I also found it a bit strange that out of all artists, Rihanna performed on a show that searches for TALENT!

The performance was ok. The song doesn’t really thrill me too much because there are gazillions of songs out there like this. But I can see why the label would go for this one, and that is to garner one more cross over song out of this album. Either way, I don’t care, “Rude Boy” to me was the best move she made to me for this album.
I really don’t know how well this song will do on the radio but props to her for trying.

In my opinion she need more work on her live performance… and vocal coaching wouldn’t hurt. There are some singers that are gifted with a voice from the start( MJ) always had great voice control from a kid on. If you go expecting a artist to perform and sound somewhat like their recording, it should happen. The most boring show’s will cause you to lose fans from coming to live performances. We attend the Essence and Macy’s music festival yearly, there have been some performers that have sold millions of albums but, suck live and I wouldn’t go to see them free. I will support their music only on cd’s. Rihanna really should step up her live performances or on her next tour instead of large arena’s she will be singing to smaller venue… this internet is a powerful thing and once word get out on her show’s well, like I said she need to step it up! Oh I didn’t care for the guitar solo not impressed, maybe if it would have been plugged in…. impressed maybe!
I’ve been to her concert 2010….um it was alright. She can’t sing thats obvious. The music over powered her voice…and the base hid her imperfections well. She did a whole rock n roll type of show and had very very revealing clothing and ‘war’ props…which I thought was…weird.
Shes not a bad singer but shes not that good. Shes not a great singer. Shes not an amazing singer. She wasn’t born to sing. SO I get why she has to have an OVer board performance.
Even kesha’s music wasn’t so heavy, I could hear her voice better and it was pretty good. I think they purposely turn it up for Rihanna. I’ve been to other concerts and their voice is great or amazing that it really sorta goes through your body, the voice is the focus. Not the performance and base. But rihanna has ‘Umbrella’ and a couple other good songs that will keep her going awhile more.
