From The Vault: Truth Hurts – ‘Addictive (Ft. Rakim)’

From The Vault is back this week with a number from Truth Hurts. Serving as the first single off her ‘Truthfully Speaking’ LP, the DJ Quik-produced ‘Addictive’ was released in late 2002 and features rapper Rakim. However, the record has proven to be the only hit to date for the R&B singer, managing to peak at #9 on the Billboard Hot 100.

What makes this song so addictive (no pun intended) is the Hindi vocal sample. Every aspect of the production and the vocal arrangement was framed cleverly around that element and helped to make this a major club hit. It’s a shame that Truth Hurts remains a one hit wonder, though, because she really can sing.

I LOVED this song when it came out.
It was the s***. Yeah she did get or the Producer (Dr. Dre ??) got sued for not clearing the sample.

I believe if she would have stayed with Dr. Dre and Aftermath, she could have really became the “West Coast MJB” as they were claiming her to be back during this period.

She messed up her Pop oriented R&B status when she went and worked with Raphael Sadique(Sp*) on her follow up album.

The second single featuring R. Kelly, “The Truth,” was even a banger! She was good. . . Too bad she is now like a nobody.

Back around the time when I kept hearing the song on radio, I didn’t like it all all but it ended up being a grower. I love this song now.

TH should have stayed with Dre.

He’s known to have discovered, and signed some of the biggest rap artists in music. Eminem and Snoop being two of them.

copyright infringement is not a game people. the Hindi track was taken without permission. the label, dj quick all dropped her like a bad habit do to the legal fees. Lesson: get clearance on a song unless you have Beyonce money ( Desiree Kissing you… )

The song, produced by DJ Quik, utilized an uncleared sample of “Thoda Resham Lagta Hai” by Hindi artist Lata Mangeshkar. The copyright holders sued Aftermath and parent company Interscope Records for $500 million dollars, and issued an injunction against further sales or performances of the record.[1] A judge later ruled that the album was not to be sold without being stickered with proper credits for Mangeshkar.[2] In summer of 2002, Truth Hurts secured a high profile spot on the Smokin’ Grooves tour with Lauryn Hill, Outkast, Cee-Lo, The Roots, Jurassic 5, and Erykah Badu.[3] However, following the buzz on “Addictive”, Truth Hurts became relatively obscure, only contributing guest vocals to “The Watcher 2” on Jay-Z’s Blueprint 2 album and “What” on Eve’s Eve-Olution. To date, she remains as a one-hit wonder in both America and the UK. “Addictive” was followed up by a song called “The Truth” featuring R. Kelly on the chorus. The song underpeformed on American radio and video outlets. This was likely due in part to the firestorm of negative press Kelly received over s** crime allegations that hit media outlets shortly before the single’s release.[4]
Truth Hurts returned in 2004 with her second album, Ready Now, on Raphael Saadiq’s independent “Pookie Entertainment” label. Its first single, “Ready Now”, was released in the summer of 2004 without much fanfare. The album was however critically acclaimed. In 2005 Truth Hurts collaborated with J Dilla on Jay Love Japan on the track “Ghetto Love”, shortly before his death in February 2006.
Truth Hurts lend her voice to three songs (“Listen to the music”, “Seven stages of love” and “The meaning of love”) of the 2007 Hollywood-Indian movie- Marigold, which starred Ali Larter and Salman Khan in the lead roles.

OMGG this is such a classic R&B banger! Such a shame about the legal issues surrounding the sample – but of course that was no fault of Truth Hurt’s but the producer of the track

I used to like this song. Rakim is a BEAST too! LEGEND in the rap game!

It’s sad that the song was so called stolen, because I think it really affected her career or lack thereof. DJ Quick has always been whack to me anyway!

  16. ANDARIEG0 November 21, 2010

I used to (and still do) love this song! Its such a shame, Truth Hurts can SANG!

  17. Keesha November 21, 2010

It is really sad that some people are too stupid to realize that it wasn’t Truth Hurts’ fault that the music was stolen and that it was the producers fault and that they resort to calling Truth Hurts names. I like the song and I have been trying to find it forever, but I didn’t remember her name or the name of the song, so thanks for posting!

  24. sherita wilson December 6, 2011

I think she is a hater. I think she is mad because her career didn’t take off like she wanted it too, so she had to call out ashanti saying she is a regular rnb artist. You need JESUS in your life because you will always be known as a one-hit wonder HATER
