In a somewhat surprising move, Alexandra Burke has departed her longtime label. Well kind of.

Signed with SyCo/Sony Music since winning the X Factor in 2008, Burke today confirmed that the Simon Cowell helmed team will no longer solely handle her career. Instead, she has signed a lucrative deal with fellow Sony Music label RCA – whose roster boasts the likes of Christina Aguilera and Kelly Clarkson. Together, both labels will oversee Burke’s recording career – although it is widely believed it is far from an equal weighting – and RCA are now ‘in the driving seat’.
Confirming the news, Burke’s brother tweeted:
“Really happy Alexandra has officially moved RCA records for new album era. Fingers crossed for progression and improved efficiency. I’d like to thank SyCo for the part they played until this point, but pastures new was required for potential progression going forward”
With an ever PC Alex herself telling the press:
“I can’t wait for the release of the next album. It’s exciting having new people join my amazing team on this along with Simon and my friends at Syco.”
Burke, whose new single is set to premiere in a matter of weeks, remains signed in the US with another Sony label – Epic Records. As many know, the 22 year old inked the multi-million dollar deal shortly after winning the British talent-search.

The news will no doubt come as a relief to both fans and casual listeners. For, in unison, they have long called for an edgier / International sound from Burke. After all, her talent is, in every which way, world class. Perhaps under the guidance of RCA – whose expertise isn’t solely vested in British Pop (ala SyCo) – the masses will now be able to see that. Bring on album #2!

I am very pleased for Alex. She is incredibly talented but she wasn’t really allowed to show her depth on the last album (although there were some real gems in there). I hate to see real talent wasted and I am afraid Syco is too crowded now. They are clearly focused on short term instant success rather than artist development.

RCA is a terrible label. It has destroyed the career of many artists. The only ones that continue to do well with them are household names in their own right.
