New Song: Sugababes – ‘Freedom’ (Full Song)

Published: Tuesday 2nd Aug 2011 by Sam

The latest line-up of the Sugababes assert their ‘Freedom’ on their first original single with new member Jade Ewen.

Due for release on September 19th, the empowering track is also the ladies first offering on new label RCA (Sony Music).

Arguably the group’s last crack at being taken seriously, it begs the question: does the song do what it needs to? The answer awaits after the jump…

While not a patch on some of the Pop classics released under the ‘Sugababes’ moniker, ‘Freedom’ does work on a number of fronts. The first, and perhaps most notable, being that it returns the group to the ‘Britishness’ which has come to be synonymous with their name; a characteristic noticeably absent from their ironically bitter ‘Sweet 7’ project.

Also, in as much as the addition of Jade could prove fatal for the band, she stands head and shoulders above Amelle and Heidi, with soaring adlibs, mobilsed by raw horse-power vocals. Indeed, however this story plays out, it’s vital she gets the recognition she deserves, as there are few this side of the pond in Pop who can do what she does.

The long and short of the matter? ‘Freedom’ is a solid effort. Whether it’ll right the group’s wrongs in the court of public opinion will be interesting to see.

I hate the new line-up, they are bland and have no connection to the public, HOWEVER, this song is pure FIRE. I love it.

  2. SelenaFabulousGomezFan August 2, 2011

This song is great, but I dont see it being a hit in the U.S.

  3. ASAP (As Sincere As Possible) August 2, 2011

I LOVE IT!!I heard this version yesterday and I’ve heard it so many times since. It is the BEST song they’ve ever released since the ‘Taller In More Ways’.Everytime I listen to it, I think about an epic video and I hope that they deliver in that aspect too.

  4. ASAP (As Sincere As Possible) August 2, 2011

@Sam, could you please add that this the radio rip and not the single or the album version???The single/album version will have a section (you could call it a ‘breakdown’, I guess) after the “tonight, tonight, we’re gonna live our lives’ segment that’s not on this version.

  5. ASAP (As Sincere As Possible) August 2, 2011

    *’Taller In More Ways’ era

  6. Janet August 2, 2011

Pretty boring, it goes nowhere at all.

    They so so over.

  7. Matt August 2, 2011

    Rubbish, utter rubbish!!!

This sounds so dated and try hard, you can tell they are trying to capture that old Sugababes sound, but since two of them weren’t even there when that sound was created, it just comes across as fake and very very try hard.

Jade is better off out of this flop group, wasted talent.

  8. Nikka August 2, 2011

The verses make no sense to the chorus, it’s like two songs meshed together.

Poor effort, they’re a hot mess.

  9. YOOSONDALOOSE August 2, 2011

I really, really like it, they have gone for something the british public will like, in terms of dancey music.

    Well done Sugababes!

  10. monica fan August 2, 2011

    they look cheap NEXT

  11. Vince August 2, 2011

I think it’s a great comeback song. It’s like the sequel of their Taller In More Ways era. COngratulations babes!

  12. onlyyoubaby August 2, 2011

Oh dear, Oh dear, Oh dear, Oh dear.

    TRIPE.

This sounds like a cut off from ‘Sweet 7’ mixed with stuff that were released last year. Why can’t they ever get it right? why are they always several steps behind everyone else with their music? It’s been like this since Mutya left, they’ve been playing catch up ever since.

Such a shame, but their day has been and long gone.

  13. Julie August 2, 2011

What is with that picture? what have they done to Heidi’s body? Jades been to the plastic surgeon it seems, new boobs? I think so

The songs quite uneventful, it’s just not strong enough, sounds quite unfinished and cheap.

Good luck, they gonna need it.

  14. Alex August 2, 2011

this isnt the full version this is radio version without the dubstep breakdown UPDATE

    It’s a very great song!!!
the girls are trying … good for them!!

the past is past.. they need to look forward..
Don’t hate people!! these girls are just puppets
they do as they’re told to!!

    great Job…

I dunno why people hate on Amelle. She had a hit collaboration that was pretty cool and her tone, though deep, works nicely with the other girls (even prior to Jade). Her voide is interesting and HOT! Heidi isn’t bad either but she does get a bit thin and flat in her upper register. Jade is a beast though. She could do better solo if she worked with the right people.

The song is cool, a bit slower than I predicted but I’m sure the full version will be better.

  19. antertain August 2, 2011

When they performed it live the track didnt grab me so much.
Hearing Jades input more has got me listening to it, so will grow on me.

Why does Amelle always come across as the 3rd wheel. Even in that pic she doing something else from the other 2.

  20. You Got The Love August 2, 2011

    This is really bad.

Sorry “sugafakes” but this ain’t gonna work, you need to just give it up.

  21. Narutoiscool August 2, 2011

Amelle, Heidi and the Eurovision flop try it yet again.

Didn’t they not get the hint last time around? NOBODY IS INTERESTED GIRLS.

They were on their last legs when Keisha was still there, but the joke has gone too far now.

    Oh and the songs S***

  22. Kelly August 2, 2011

Yes as the lyrics say “DUMB DUMB DUMB DUMB” just like this song, just like this group.

    R.I.P Sugababes

  23. Debbie August 2, 2011

They have been crap since Amelle joined, this is no improvement on the last two or three albums, even Wear My Kiss was better than this.

  24. InDaHouse August 2, 2011

    This is:

    Crap
    Unoriginal
    Boring
    Dated
    Bland
    Wet

It just doesn’t work, they just don’t work as a group.

    @ヅ•·.·´¯`·.·•-ΛALEXISR-BAHAMAS♩ ♪ ♫ ♬ ★ ☆ ✰ T.I.P.•·.·´¯`·.·•ヅ

Amelle gets hate because a lot of people see her as the downfall of the group, yes Mutya chose to walk out, but that girl has been nothing but a curse since she joined.

My take on this song is simple – it really does nothing for me, the production is weak, the lyrics are cringe worthy and I agree with what @Matt said, it does sound like they’re trying to be like the group of old, but two of them aren’t up to it and it shows on how poor this song sounds.

  26. JonnyK August 2, 2011

The songs not bad, but its just not very good either.

    Its just meh.

  27. tweetypiebabe1 August 2, 2011

I quite like it I just wish the beat would go harder. I don’t know for some reason the beat on the Nokia commercial sounds fiercer.

  28. Jodie August 2, 2011

The public have moved on from them, we have The Saturdays now, we dont need this washed up, over the hill, past it joke any more.

All good things must come to an end, their time expired when Keisha got kicked out.

  29. artistgal August 2, 2011

I wonder how much longer they can drag this out for?

The songs OK but it just lacks something, I cant put my finger on it, but it just doesnt work on the whole for me.

I wish them luck, but I feel their time has passed and its time to move on from them.

  30. callyourboyfriend August 2, 2011

This line up just dont click with me, its all very fake and not organic enough like the previous three line ups.

I havent played the song, they dont interest me enough to even press play.

  34. batesyboi August 2, 2011

jade should of stayed solo, this is terrible.

  35. SALAS August 2, 2011

Awful production, average vocals, bad lyrics & they look a state.

  36. mIllaOnTheGoInYourHead August 2, 2011

Why are they even bothering for? if this is the best they can do, they may as well go home.

I hope Keisha’s solo stuff is better than this.

  37. Matty August 2, 2011

    i agree with everything!

  38. yaya August 2, 2011

    I don’t like it.

Nothing against them personally, but the songs not very strong, sounds more like an album filler to me.

  39. knowyourplace August 2, 2011

The drink driver, the old blonde and the desperate for fame one, don’t it just make you want to laugh?

Hot mess, just a hot mess.

  40. darren August 2, 2011

  41. Sarah August 2, 2011

Freedom? Freedom from their recording contract come Christmas more like.

  42. Dennis August 2, 2011

New members aside, this song is lacking….. lacking even more than that new Leona Lewis song.

I doesn’t do or stir anything in me whatsoever

  43. minimarcy August 2, 2011

I think the train has left the station, but nobody told these three replacements.

The songs s***, it’ll be lucky to make a dent on the chart longer than week 1.

  44. TheHoblin August 2, 2011

God this song is boring, it seems to be building to something that never arrives, it’s just sort of going through the motions with no direction to anything.

I guess the real talent went with the members that left.

  45. Jamie August 2, 2011

Jade has sucked the very life out of this group, the girl is poison to anything she touches. How many record deals has she had now? and still she hasn’t been successful.

Give it up woman, it’s never going to happen.

  46. ClairRankin August 2, 2011

Two of them aren’t even “Sugababes” how can you “comeback” from something when you weren’t even there in the first place? Hysterical.

I respect people more for working hard for their success, not just jump into something and get a free ride in this world, like two of these girls have.

I feel sorry for Heidi really, though she looks like she’s aged about 10 years in the last year alone, must be all the stress of having to get used to new girls every few years, poor lass.

  47. nice_gurl August 2, 2011

It’s alright for a dance song I guess.Nothing I will be listening to.

  48. James August 6, 2011

@tweetypiebabe1 I agree that the song sounded better in the Nokia commercial. The dubstep part sounded better in the beginning of the song. I do hope they do well with this single though. As long as Heidi is in the group I still consider them the Sugababes, seeing as she has been in the group for 10 years.

  49. James August 6, 2011

And @Jamie, I agree that Jade has sucked the life out of the group, but I think that has a lot to do with Keisha leaving, no one can replace her. Jade is very bland though, especially as part of this group.
