That Grape Juice Interviews Mary J. Blige

Published: Wednesday 9th Nov 2011 by Sam

All Hail Queen Mary!

Indeed, the 20 illustrious years of Mary J. Blige‘s career have seen her rise through the ranks to the status she enjoys today – music royalty.

And with the prime driver of this being the warts and all sharing of her life (with her ever-identifying audience), it’s apt that Blige is on the brink of releasing a new album titled ‘My Life II: The Journey Continues’. A sequel of sorts to 1994’s ‘My Life’, this outing sees the Grammy winner in an altogether different space and place.

In one of her only UK interviews this year, the Urban icon talks to That Grape Juice about the LP, her struggles, wanting to commit suicide, collaborating with Beyonce, her thoughts on the “new breed” of R&B females, coaching on The Voice (UK), her next album, and a so much more!

As ever, we ask the questions others won’t. And answer them, a candid, Mary does.

‘My Life II: The Journey Continues (Act I)’ arrives in stores globally on November 21st

  9. Luigi November 9, 2011

So funny how she gives so much praise to Beyonce, Rihanna, Fantasia and Rihanna but when asked about Ciara, she just says “I like her” in a slightly shady way lol!!

  13. Kimberly November 9, 2011

omfg Mary preach preach, That is right they want to do what works not the quality music that will stay and speak to your heart. Now music is about techno, and dance it is flooded now!!!!!
But mary throw some serious shade in that interview indirectly towards this one artist’s music. lmao,

Mary keep it cute before you get attacked with the big guns. lol I am waiting for the cd and that one collab.

  14. Kimberly November 9, 2011

@ lolo you didn’t get the interview did you, dumbass.
    Dance? rihanna? first? that’s all

  15. Mariah4Life November 9, 2011

LMAO! I LOVE how she mentioned what a bad place music is in right with tacky ‘get on the floor’ type music, then threw out Rihanna’s name as an example. I already loved Mary, but that made me love her a little bit more.

  16. LOLO November 9, 2011

B**** i did. she said it jnust bc rihanan does it it doesnt work u.

bc when she thinks of dance and black chisk rihanna is the first ho

  18. KD November 9, 2011

Oh Ciara…I like her *funny face* *cough*

    LOL 🙂

S/N: Hate that she and Beyonce weren’t in the studio together. Hope the song does not sound disjointed.

  19. Kimberly November 9, 2011

@ lola, b**** go to school !you lack comprehension skills. she said that music is in a bad place right now and listen to what was said after. she said nothing about dance and black chick. Don’t narrow down anything to race. music is music and dance music is not new to the industry idiot. don’t search and dig for props.

Music is def in a bad place and i am sure everyone agrees. Money first!

mary stay true to yourself and all the great singers in music never let their voice go to waste through techno and dance. never. only the once lack the vocal ability, it is easier i guess, and just throw the gimmicks and what to take to credit of being great and talented.

  20. Ronnie November 9, 2011

LOVE LOVE LOVE MARY! my life II is about to be album of the year. ALL the reviews have been GREAT!!! Mary is consistent with providing great ALBUMS.

  23. peach361 November 9, 2011

well i kinda see what others are saying when she comment bout Ci but it really doesn’t bother me how Mary personal feels bout Ciara. I just feels its important for all these black females should support each others. I like Mary and all the names she called out plus but Ciara is my favorite young artist out today.

  24. Tia November 9, 2011

Mary’s been in the game for forever…..still not sure if imma be getting this album. Of course I wanna hear the song with her and Bey, but don’t know if Imma buy the album…

Drake albums not the good…..and although I love WFL video, I still hate the song. I don’t know if I’ll be buying anyones album…

On topic: Loved the interview…. Mary looks great. I agree with a lot of what Mary was saying about the music industry today.

  34. Jamal November 9, 2011

it was some shade with Ciara….

  35. KWEENBEY4 November 9, 2011

First, congrats to Sam for landing a legend like Mary, But!!!! This interview was awkward as hell… Sam’s voice is terrible, Mary’s facial expressions were unpleasant. Was just so so awkward to me. I don’t like how people are on this anti dance/pop bandwagon. It seem’s like the artists who are negative about it. Are the one’s who failed to secure a hit in that genre of music. Like if you like R&B purchase it. But don’t get angry that 2 million more people would prefer to purchase a dance/pop song. That irritates me. Team Breezy is notorious for trying to diss Usher for his dance/pop hits but cant get enough of Browns flopped dance songs…

  36. KWEENBEY4 November 9, 2011

Rihanna forgot to tip Ciara at the party. And Mary cant even remember who the f*** she is. Ciara is so funny lol.

  37. The Truth November 9, 2011

Mary wasn’t throwing shade at anyone or music type. She was being honest. She was asked a question and she answered it. She was asked how she felt about the state of urban music and she spoke based on her experience.

    Great interview!

    McDonalds giving away $250 giftcards 2 celebrate their 80th anniversary…next 24hrs ONLY..

  41. ADC143 November 9, 2011

I don’t want Mary to ever have a big dance/pop hit, because a) that’s not who she is and b) that’s not what her fans want. She seems to know that and I’m glad. Alienate your core audience for the sake of being trendy for 5 minutes to a bunch of flaky year olds, and your career will come to a screeching halt sooner or later. Usher is alienating and losing respect from his real fans. Those 12-16 white girls and gay boys that like that cheesy thumpa-thumpa crap might buy it today but when they’re not supporting him past the song…and as soon as the tide changes, Usher will be without ANY audience. The pop fans never really cared that much and the R&B fans are now insulted at his trading up.

  42. Ealdorman November 9, 2011

    Great nterview! Thanks for that!

Mary’s face when you mentioned that no name flopped artist (Ciara) was priceless. 😀

  43. swagg November 9, 2011

good interview tgj!…i wasnt even lookin at the screen (im working) and i could tell by the way she answered that it was a lil shady “oh yea her” lol…cant wait for the album to drop it will be the last i buy this year monica moved to feb drake will get downloaded and i dont know when the hell meek mill droppin ..and i like how she kept it real about the urban music scene

  51. Troy November 9, 2011

It’s funny how all the beYAWNcy zombies who praise that weave wearing pole dancing fake pregnancy having b*tch, dogged Mary out, calling her all kinds of names and that she’s washed up etc., now that she has that FAKE B*TCH beYAWNcy on a duet all these beYAWNcy zombies are jumping on how they like Mary and how nice the duet is going to be, PLEASE. You fake one’s are the same ones who dogged Lady GaGa out until beYAWNcy begged her to do a duet so that she can get a number one song off of GaGa, started riding GaGa’s cooch-hole. Then when Adele stole that number one spot for over 8 weeks on the charts, they started calling Adele fat and sweaty fat b**** etc., because she bumped beYAWNcy out of the number one spot only after two weeks. Fake, Fake, Fake. Now that the fake ‘4’ didn’t do well on the charts in the U.S. and Adele’s cd has outsold, and outshined and will get Grammy after Grammy, every beYAWNcy fans want to hate on Adele, who has turned out two quality, adult and popular cds, unlike beYAWNcy who is still thinking she is Willow Smiths age. And yes 4 is different from her other child-like material of a cd, it still sucks. With that being said, Mary said beYAWNcy sent her the track with vocals already on there, now she (beYAWNcy) wants Michael Jackson status so the b*tch is looking for any way possible to get her cd’s sold even rereleasing them in deluxe forms, and DVD concerts etc., a total sign of desperation and who in the world puts out a video for every song on a cd if it’s not out of desperation to sell a tired old cd (4). So this track and song she’s sent to Mary she is hoping that it goes number one and that she can get writing credits like she’s taken writing credits for other peoples work in the past. beYAWNcy will never have the status of a real R&B singer like Mary J. Blige who is next in line for the Queen of Soul, behind Whitney Houston but right now Aretha Franklin owns that Crown. Nor will she be the Pop Princess, that title belongs to Janet Jackson – succeeded by Madonna, succeeded by Maraiah Carey, succeeded by Britney Spears succeeded by Rhianna, succeeded by Lady GaGa, depending on the next 5-10 years for the last two artist. So what and who is beYAWNcy? Well professionally, she’s a copy-cat, and a fake fraud who has stolen dance and video choreography, grammys, writing credits etc. Rhianna has more number one’s than beYAWNcy and this is not including the number one’s she had with Destinys Child. As a Solo Artist, Rhianna still holds more number ones, behind Mariah Carey. As far as this interview with Mary J. Blige, these sissies will always look deeper into the interview stating that she was being shady when she made her comment about Ciara, she was merely clearing her throat as she had nothing further to say about Ciara. Mary has too much class to worry about little Miss Pop that c****** Ciara who has not even come close to having as many number one’s as Mary. As far as her clearing her throat, she also did the same throat clearing thing when asked about the type of music she makes @7:52 so her pause on the Ciara question and the pause @7:52 was basically she was done with her statement. F***, always making things out to be something that it’s not.
Mary is correct when she says music is not what it use to be and Gladys, Patti, Diana all the greats have said the same thing music is not what it use to be it’s about quantity and selling a quick song as oppose to music being about quality. beYAWNcy is guilty of quantity and her music has never been quality and if it is she mixes it up, therefore if u listen to her cd decades from now it will not be nostalgic because it’s not real music, Telephone, Single Ladies, Ego, Diva, all that sh*t has no relevance decades from now. With Mary, you can listen to My Life, and Mary cd and enjoy the quality put into the cds. Do yo thing Mary.

  52. S*** (U MAD?) November 9, 2011

DONT NOBODY wanna read all that belligerent Mess!!

I Could give a F*** LESS about Rihs so called “#1s” when HALF of them were fraudulent anyway.

Did you really think anyone was gonna read that long ass, pressed b*******? 😀 All you did was prove how much of a life you DON’T have to have enough to to type that s*** out. 58. SBC19 November 9, 2011

Sorry but dance/pop is corny and repetitive. I’m sick of all this flaky and flighty ‘turn your brain off’ electro/dance/pop crap that the likes of Rihanna, Katy Perry, Ke$ha, Gago, LMFAO and Taio Cruz do. It’s cheesy, generic, recycled and has no depth or merit. It sounds like something the kids on Saved By the Bell would try to dance to. I sense a real backlash coming against that silly non-music in 2012, with dance music being ran off the radio and anyone who is known for making being treated as a pariah, and it won’t be a moment too soon AFAIC. Adele is the first affront to it. Hopefully more artists will follow suit and real music and talent will come back, as opposed to all this “microwave popcorn” that Linda Perry accurately described being so everywhere. Mary was right to reject any suggestion that she delve into it, because that junk is ridiculous and isn’t for any artist with talent and/or who wants to be taken seriously. It’s the music of dorks.

  59. jamir21 November 9, 2011

    The interview was great………
The shade at Ciara was HILARIOUS !!!!!

He said: “Listen, King Jehoshaphat and all who live in Judah and Jerusalem! This is what the LORD says to you: ‘Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God’s. … You will not have to fight this battle. Take up your positions; stand firm and see the deliverance the LORD will give you, O Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Go out to face them tomorrow, and the LORD will be with you.'”
    2 Chronicles 20:15,17

AKA Cassie is gonna be the QUEEN of pop when people realize those fake posers (BLEACHONCE, OBESEDELE, RIHAWFUL, AND NICKI GARBAJ) AINT NOTHING

  64. jamir21 November 9, 2011

    @ Cween C
Did you just say that Cassie is the QUEEN OF POP ?

You need to have several seats for that comment !

  65. Cween C November 9, 2011

Then he went up from there to Bethel; and as he was going up the road, some youths came from the city and mocked him, and said to him, “Go up, you baldhead! Go up, you baldhead!” So he turned around and looked at them, and pronounced a curse on them in the name of the LORD. And two female bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of the youths.

    2 Kings 2:23-24

You know your faves are gonna be BALD after Cassie’s album is released. They’re all pressed over her emerging fame so they flame her and shut her out of the music business she was destined FOR. But her second album will rocket her to success and YOU KNOW IT.

  68. Cween C November 9, 2011

You call me pressed bcuz i SUPPORT Cassie as an artist and as a representation of my faith in CHRIST you can hate and squabble about your faves all day but at the end of the day Cassie will still be a greater artist than some of the people you shamelessly stan for just because she is a newer artist does not mean she’s worse than people like MJ, Aretha, Madonna etc she’s just younger and has not developed a fan base like them but she will because she has the talent and God is on her side

  69. jamir21 November 9, 2011

    @ Gween C
Cassie will never be a greater artist like my FAVES !!!!

    My faves done WONDERS !!!!!

    Yours didnt !!!!!

Cassie has talent ???????? *scratches head* i didnt know that she had TALENT !!!

Why did you chose that ugly picture of Bey ! # NO SHADE BUT SHADE

  73. Cween C November 9, 2011

I am a support of Cassie and Jesus and just because you all forsake her as an artist does not mean she doesnt have talent she is the queen of pop becoming the QUEEN of pop is based on TALENT not CHART positions or grammies and everyone knows that and day in and out Cassie slays the competish like Gaga and Mariah and they know she will eventually tear up the charts so they be releasin albums left and right b4 cassie’s new ALBUM due 2012 is released

    praise jesus & cassie
    Cween C

  74. jamir21 November 9, 2011

    @ Cween C
    Okay whatever you say !!!!!!

How does Cassie slays Gaga and Mariah ????? #I CANT I WONT !

Let me know…when Cassie wind 16 grammys, 18 billboard music awards, and sells over 100 million records.!!!!

  75. Cween C November 9, 2011

Then Saul said, “Thus shall you say to David, ‘The king desires no bride-price except a hundred foreskins of the Philistines, that he may be avenged of the king’s enemies.’” Now Saul thought to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines. And when his servants told David these words, it pleased David well to be the king’s son-in-law. Before the time had expired, David arose and went, along with his men, and killed two hundred of the Philistines. And David brought their foreskins, which were given in full number to the king, that he might become the king’s son-in-law. And Saul gave him his daughter Michal for a wife

    Samuel 18:25-27

Cassie has jesus on her side and gaga and mariah know that and though they may be popular now you will see they will slowly decline in popularity over the years while Cassie is destined for fame, she can outsing any of them any day and she knows that and they know that and god knows that

  76. jamir21 November 9, 2011

    @ Cween C

Cassie will never outshine GAGA AND MARIAH !!!!!!

Cassie will be at the bottom of the barrel FOREVER, FOREVER, FOREVER, FOREVER !

  77. Cween C November 9, 2011

I disagree with you. Cassie has proven her lasting influence on the music game, she’s won 6 BET awards. Her album got to #2 on the Billboard Hot R&B charts, Has GaGa ever gotten to #2 on the Hot R&B charts? NO.

  78. jamir21 November 9, 2011

    @ Cween C

6 BET Awards and No. 2 on Billboard Hot R&B Charts

Is that something that you are proud of your fave !

  79. Cween C November 9, 2011

Gaga’s going on her fourteenth minute of fame. She’s been in the game only a few months and she’s peaked, I doubt her next album will do very well, the fad is done. Sure she’s won grammies but so do lots of talentless one hit wonders like Lauryn Hill. All grammies mean is that she’s popular, they have nothing to do with how a record sounds. Cassie should’ve gotten those grammies and they know it. Cassie was a megastar from 2006-2009 but since she won seven BET awards which are a better indicator of her popularity as an R&B artist she hasn’t performed well since Gaga stole her style and outfits and Adele is copying her vocal tricks and range and thats why she’s getting surgery because she couldnt handle Cassie’s range and christ knows there is only 1 true QUEEN OF POP and thats Cassie

  82. ChristinasCOMING November 10, 2011

After that comment you made about Urban music changing for the worse, I am definitely buying My Life II!

Mary, you my girl and I love you for that comment!

She makes such a great point. You got urban acts like Usher who has decided to take quantity over quality just because that’s what sells right now. He used to be quality. You got the Rihanna’s of the world who will just be quantity and the Beyonce’s who are a little bit of both so I’m glad Mary pointed that out!

  83. Dante November 10, 2011

Mjb thank u so much for the Love u Gave Fantasia everything u said was the truth!!

  84. arob November 12, 2011

Yes Mary, make a statement that music needs to return back to quality. I think this year, Mary, Beyonce with 4, and Adele’s album all have shown that music does not need to be that techno watered down radio music. Music needs to return to that.
