I do not know if anyone notices a trend in those numbers. Her first week #’s have been on the increase with each subsequent release. Given her ascension over the years and the monster smash that is “We Found Love” I anticipate >300 000 copies in the US and >= 1 milli worldwide on her 1st week.
it don’t matter what she sells 1st wk. what matters is if her album has LONGEVITY on the charts! i’d rather start slow and sell CONSISTENTLY than sell a bunch 1st wk and then drop off right away(*cough*gaga*cough*)

I think Rihanna will sell between 165k-250k. From the looks of her opening numbers she is on an upward sales swing.

Rihanna made an album that wasn’t on trend with the Lady Gaga Fame/Monster type pop that was dominating the airwaves. it was called Rated R, and it sold better than 4. 4’s underperformance has less to do with a lack of promo and more to do with a lack of hits. Russian Roulette was a huge risk, and it charted top 10. Rude Boy was more of an urban/ r&b track than a pop song, and it topped BB Hot 100 for something like 4 or 5 weeks. So, apparently Rihanna doesn’t have to release “mainstream music” exclusively to get hits, and hits sell albums far more effectively than live performances.

What I respect about Rihanna is that she understands the world of entertainment like few do. The female pop (sometimes mixed with R & B) greats have all released their best artistic achievements around album #4 or #5. Here is the short list:
Janet- The Velvet Rope Album #4- masterpiece
Madonna- Erotica- Album #5- masterpiece
Beyoncé- 4- I won’t call it a classic yet because it’s too new but definitely my favorite. Wonderful album.
Rihanna- Rated R- same thing. it’s age prevents me from calling it a classic but I have a feeling THIS will be her defining album. Fantastic album.
What do these albums all have in common? It’s their lowest sellers but their BEST material (not including Madonna here because American Life is her lowest selling album at 4 million WW). Of course, this is only my opinion.
I find this Beyoncé vs. RIhanna s*** ridiculous. But I also understand that stan wars are fun, so continue to enjoy them. But in all seriousness, I LOVE the fact that Rihanna is killing the pop charts! Love it! This does not threaten my love for Bey at all.
Sales for Talk That Talk? We all know that Rihanna sells between 100,000-300,000 first week. However, her ULTIMATE sales are what really matter & they will be big, just like for LOUD.

Keep telling yourself that selling upwards of 6M albums a year in this market doesn’t make Rihanna a big album seller, especially when only one other artist has done it this year (Adele). Just like you can keep telling yourself that she isn’t a big album seller because she doesn’t have a huge debut sales week in the US, even though Rihanna’s last two albums have each gone on to sell more copies than artists who have had blockbuster first week US debuts. Look I know how mad it makes you that LOUD’s sales trajectory is outclassing the Trinity, making it that much harder for you and all the haters to refer to Rihanna as a singles artist, but you could at least take that s*** like a man and try not to look so thirsty for shade.
Rihanna’s “exposure” is mostly coming from her radio hits and magazine covers. You can’t even count the number of times she’s performed live, outside of her tour, this year, on one hand. Adele’s tour, even before the cancellations, wasn’t even going to come close to grossing what LOUD tour will, or even what Teenage Dream tour is going to gross. Adele is not bigger than Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Beyonce, Britney Spears, or Katy Perry, just because Adele has one album that’s outselling their albums this year. Only a pressed fiend, who can’t find any new straws to grasp, would insinuate such a thing.

Rihanna has been so busy with her Loud tour that I’m not sure if this is going to do as well as some of the other albums. There hasn’t been as much hype as her previous album and people are still concentrating on her Loud tour.
There’s a lot of talk comparing her to the likes of Beyonce. The fact remains that Beyonce has not had to work half as hard as Rihanna. Rihanna releases a new single/album pretty often. Beyonce release “4” and has not had to do much else to be successful with this release. Rihanna has a lot of Billboard #1’s yes, but that’s because she releases a single/album all the time. 6 albums in 6 years compared to 4 in 8 for Beyonce, just shows that Rihanna is scared of being forgotten or feels that she has to present in order to be successful. A true artist would be able to release much less albums and be successful because of their fan base and really should be memorable.
There was A LOT of promo for Loud and only sold 207,000 in Week 1. With Talk That Talk being almost contradictory to what she is actually working on now (her Loud Tour), is it really going to do as well???
When comparing her to the likes of MJ and Mary J Blige, it is common knowledge that Mary is pretty much more of an album artist whereas Rihanna has had more success with her singles. Mary has been around for as long as I can remember and has a fan base bigger than you can probably ever imagine.Will MJ’s album do as well with no promo whatsoever? Probably now that he’s dead and had such a following in the first place.
So it’s kind of touch and go for Rihanna as far as we’re concerned. The album may not do so well but she’ll probably smash it in the singles chart when she releases.
LOUD was a flop. 1.5 million US and 5-6 million WW is not all that. Get back at me when she scores an album that sells over 3x platinum in the U.S. and sells in the double digit millions worldwide. What’s even more embarrassing is that she had all those hits from it and it didn’t do more. Just goes to show no one wants to buy a whole album from that bleating cat. They only want the cheap ass single downloads. LOL
FLOUD is what we should call it, because that s*** tanked.
In the meantime, I predict that MJ and MJB are going to slay her in sales. I don’t know who between Mary and Michael will get that #1 album but it for damn sure won’t be Rihanna.

Right now Rihanna is more commercial and has better selling singles while beyonce is obviously the better live performer and has better artistry/voice. Both are commendable and talented. I prefer beyonce, but I still like Rihanna and a lot of her songs are really catchy.
