Historically, the MTV Video Music Awards have saved the surprises for the show. However, organisers are bringing the jaw-dropping moments early this year. Because Rihanna, yes Rihanna, has been named the 2016 recipient of the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.

The reveal was made moments ago on social media and our jaws remain ajar.
Saluted for her contributions to the world of music visuals, the honour will see Rih join the list of previous winners such as Beyonce, Janet Jackson, and Britney Spears. She will also perform.

Ms. Fenty will be presented with the award at Madison Square Garden on August 28th 2016.
Say what we will about Rih, but we’ve always felt she has excelled with her visual output.
That said, this – much like the Justin Timberlake year – borders on a farce.
See, it’s not that she hasn’t delivered many a dazzling video. However, it’s a) premature and b) comical that her name is being aligned in any way, shape, or form with Michael Jackson.
Forget streaming, the music business seems to be imploding in more ways than one.
