Canadian Comedian Responds to Backlash for Saying the #FreeBritney Movement Was ‘A Mistake’

Published: Friday 4th Mar 2022 by Rashad

Canadian comedienne Bonnie McFarlane probably wasn’t laughing when she took a look at her Twitter mentions following commentary she made about Britney Spears‘ highly publicized family drama.

The Pop diva, as has been extensively reported, shocked the world last summer when she detailed the horrors of her 13-year conservatorship – a court-ordered arrangement she claimed empowered the Spears family to emotionally and financially abuse her.

Since the legal stronghold was terminated in late 2021, the ‘Stronger’ singer has publicly taken aim at her family members – namely mom, dad, and sister – for their roles in enforcing the conservatorship. Slamming them on an almost-weekly basis, the criticisms have garnered cheers from some for the 40-year-old (who has historically been quiet on the topic) while others have expressed concern for her current mental state.

Among the latter is McFarlane, whose weigh-in on the matter caused Britney’s fans – affectionately called the #BritneyArmy – to suit up in the singer’s defense.

After taking to Twitter Wednesday (March 2) to say ‘that free britney thing might’ve been a mistake,’ Bonnie found out the true mistake may have been infuriating one of music’s staunchest fan bases.

It’s believed McFarlane’s original comments were in response to headlines Spears garnered earlier this week for posting topless photos from the beach.

As of time reported, the Pop icon hasn’t responded to the shade.

Just because Britney may not be neurotypical it doesn’t mean she deserves to be in the conservatorship she was in. The fact that anyone thinks it’s ‘either or’ just shows the lack of mental health awareness. Britney may not present the way everyone else does, that doesn’t mean she should be completely void of making her own choices. It just sounds like after YEARS OF BEING TRAUMATISED she may need some extra support. That isn’t surprising.
