Lady GaGa has done it again.
The Pop powerhouse’s ambitious foray into the world of Jazz has paid off handsomely.
For ‘Cheek To Cheek’, her collaborative album with the legendary Tony Bennett has rocketed straight to #1 on the Billboard 200 tally.

The LP, which is comprised of classic standards (covers) sold an impressive 131,000 copies in its opening week according to Nielsen SoundScan. Intriguingly, the set sold just one thousand copies more to beat out its nearest competitor Kevin Chesney, whose project ‘The Big Revival’ shifted 130,000 units.
‘Cheek’, which also hits #1 on both the Jazz Albums and Traditional Jazz Albums charts, becomes GaGa’s third LP to hit the top spot (the previous being 2011’s ‘Born This Way’ and last year’s ‘ARTPOP’). For Bennett, it’s his second.
Interestingly, the feat sees the 88-year old serve as the oldest living act to earn a number one album, besting a record he set himself back in 2011. That year, a then 85-year old topped the charts with ‘Duets II’ (which featured a collaboration with GaGa on ‘The Lady Is a Tramp’).

Just as often she plays the submissive part, saying “I just wanna be the kind of girl you like,” or even “Punish me, please!” What she’s shaking off relates more to any one idea we might have of her — or, in the mild album opener “Pretty Hurts,” any female held to a standard of “perfection”: “Momma said you’re a pretty girl/what’s in your head doesn’t matter.”
We’ll never really know what a day contains for Beyoncé, as this year’s gauzy, self-directed HBO “documentary,” Life Is But a Dream, reminded us. But this album reveals plenty of what’s in that head of hers. One of the most beautiful, painstakingly constructed women in the world singing “Pretty Hurts”? Clearly, she’s a little conflicted. Here more than ever Bey indulges clashing impulses — between strength and escape, megapop and fresh sounds, big messages and resonant lyrics. “Haunted,” “No Angel,” “Jealous,” and “Superpower,” a doo-wop-tinged track featuring a mumbly Frank Ocean: These treat relationships with the same raw instinct that suffuses her s** songs, coasting along or snarling up according to flitting moods. She even goes full Drake on “Mine,” a misty six-plus minutes featuring Drizzy himself.
Some fans will no doubt feel lost in this murky, intermittently thrilling new territory. For them — and everyone else with a heart — there’s “Blue,” which features her baby-talking toddler Blue Ivy reverbed into infinity at the end, but more importantly, proves that not every piano-laden pop ballad need bring the doldrums on. Unusually for an industry fuelled by hype, it was the most well-kept secret since David Bowie’s comeback album earlier this year, and all the more shocking for the global heft of its subject: at midnight Eastern Standard Time – around five o’clock this morning – Beyoncé suddenly released an album, available immediately through iTunes, with no advance promotional campaign at all.
A package of 14 new songs accompanied by 17 video clips, the self-titled “ visual album” is the singer’s fifth long-player, and will only be obtainable in its entirety until tracks are individually downloadable in a week’s time.
That’s pretty much where the surprises end, however. Musically, it’s the same kind of electro R&B with which radio is already awash – in large part because it’s produced by the same small coterie of hip producers, with Timbaland appearing to take the most prominent role amongst the likes of Detail, Jerome Harmon, Pharrell Williams and Ryan Tedder.
And there’s the obligatory appearance by her husband Jay Z, who she proudly claims “can’t keep your eyes off my fanny, daddy”, over a cavernous sub-bass groove as billowing and bountiful as that legendary booty.
Elsewhere, Pharrell, Drake and Frank Ocean chip in with duets, and the celebrity couple’s daughter Blue Ivy closes proceedings with a few cutesy burblings which, following the album’s celebration of Beyoncé’s sexuality, success and jet-set lifestyle – the accompanying clips are variously shot in global locations including France, Brazil, Australia and America, and in some cases resemble high-budget holiday videos – seems annoyingly like a you-can-have-it-all boast: all this power and luxury, and a happy family too!
Which is rather ironic, as the album likewise seeks to have its cake and eat it – an apt metaphor, in the circumstances. Following Beyoncé’s bland assertion that “My aspiration in life would be… to be happy”, the opening track “Pretty Hurts” deals with the insecurity and anxieties of a girl undergoing cosmetic surgery, rooted in parental pressure – “Mama said, ‘You’re a pretty girl, what’s in your head, it doesn’t matter’”.
It’s the best thing on the album by far, an undeniably noble attempt to boost female morale which finds its echo later in the feminist manifesto of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie featured in “ Flawless”; yet the rest of the album is an unashamed celebration of the very physical virtues, and the ultimate fulfillment of sexuality they inevitably bring, which leads so many women to suffer those anxieties in the first place.

A tour through Beyoncé’s backstory, a meditation on Third Wave feminism and a rejection of perfection, Beyoncé is the singer at her rawest, realest, and most personal, with a sound deeper and darker than ever before.
Unlike 4, which looked to soul hits of the ’70s and ’80s for inspiration, Beyoncé’s prevailing palette is the woozy Southern hip-hop that is both the music of the singer’s youth and a key influence for contemporary rap and R&B. The album is loaded with trunk-rattling bass, machinegun hi-hats and synths both soft and shrill, resulting in an effort that owes more to rap than any Beyoncé album since the bombastic B’Day.
Beyoncé is certainly comfortable with it: the bipartite ‘Haunted’ moves from smoky ethereality to an off-kilter club beat somewhere between Jacques Greene and Burial, a foreboding composition in which she raps a caustic industry takedown and sings a seductive hook that is, well, haunting. On ‘Mine’, she takes Drake’s ‘Wu-Tang Forever’ pronouncement (“it’s yours”) to heart, making 40’s slow-burning beat her own and turning Drake into a feedback-obscured hook man. Album highlight ‘***Flawless’, an expanded version of the previously released ‘Bow Down’, removes the chopped-and-screwed ‘I Been On’ component but keeps the H-Town menace on her most confrontational display of pop dominance to date.
Since first debuting earlier this year, the “bow down b******” refrain of ‘***Flawless’ has been a source of countless “Is Beyoncé A Feminist Or Not?” discussions. It’s certainly an argument she’s ready to lean into on the album, handing over the second verse of the song to Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and excerpting a speech that practically defines Third Wave Feminism. But while Beyoncé tackles female self-image on ‘Pretty Hurts’ and relationship equality on the ‘If I Were A Boy’-reminiscent ‘Jealous’, it’s the flaunting of her sexuality that will keep those think pieces coming.
S** is all over the record, and not just in the vague suggestions of something like ‘Naughty Girl’. While ‘Blow’ (fueled by a vintage turn from Pharrell and Timbaland) keeps things relatively light with a “lick my skittles” analogy and ‘Rocket’ turns her s** life into topography, ‘Partition’ is all “‘yonce on her knees,” complete with a surprising (if not quite timely) Monica Lewinsky reference and a feminist speech from (no kidding) the French version of The Big Lebowski. Ready or not, Beyoncé’s newfound explicitness is part of a personal brand of feminism that allows her to be a wife, a mother, and a s** goddess.
But for all the “I woke up like this” self-confidence on Beyoncé, the most common lyrical theme is perfection. She describes it as “the disease of a nation” on ‘Pretty Hurts’, and shrugs it off masterfully on ‘Haunted’; on ‘No Angel’, she puts theory into practice, with an imperfect but touching performance, her cooing breathy and flawed. Throughout, she keeps returning to the theme: she’s “no angel,” she’s “just human,” and her aspiration is simply “to be happy.” In a year that saw the release of her confessional-but-calculated Life Is But A Dream documentary, it’s a refreshing bit of honesty and humanity from the singular pop star of our age.
Like the singer herself, Beyoncé is not perfect. ‘Drunk in Love’ is the requisite duet with Jay Z (whose Ike Turner-referencing verse caps off a year of cringeworthy efforts), ‘XO’ reeks of Ryan Tedder’s paint-by-number hitmaking, and while ‘Rocket’ is a pitch-perfect rehash of D’angelo’s ‘Untitled (How Does It Feel)’, it seems unnecessary here. Thankfully, the album closes strongly and subtly with a trio of low-key ballads: the Frank Ocean-assisted ‘Superpower’, the somber ‘Heaven’, and the joyful ‘Blue’. The latter pair are two sides of the same coin: the heartbreaking ‘Heaven’ is most likely about her miscarriage, while ‘Blue’ celebrates (and features) daughter Blue Ivy in what is sure to become a wedding song for the ages.
As she sings on ‘Rocket’, Beyoncé can be “a piece of sunshine, inner peace, entertainer.” The closest thing we have to a monoculture pop star, Beyoncé is fine with being all things to all people, but as she makes clear on this album, it will be on her own terms. Beyoncé is a stronger personal statement than Magna Carta… Holy Grail, less self-indulgent than The 20/20 Experience, and (in its own way) as dark and confrontational as Yeezus. Beating the boys at their own game — how’s that for feminism?
