Readers of That Grape Juice know what avid music lovers we are – especially of hits past.

So, just as our retrospective features ‘From the Vault’ and ‘TGJ Replay’  allow us the chance to re-spin the gems and jams of yesterday of one artist, our newest feature Chart Rewind – a variation of our current Retro Rewind assay – accedes salutes to an entire era of music history.

This week we press play on ‘I’m Real’ – a #1 hit for pop star/media mogul Jennifer Lopez found on the remix album ‘J to tha L–O! The Remixes.’ After dethroning then-newcomer Alicia Keys‘Fallin,’ the song would go on to reign for a non-consecutive 5 weeks (beginning this week in 2001).  Although greeted with controversy for Lopez’s use of the ‘n-word’ in the Rick James-sampled number, fans were unmoved and unbothered as they helped hoist its parent album right to the top of the Billboard 200 early the next year – an accomplishment that landed her in the history books as she became the first artist to see a remix album go to #1 on the albums’ chart.

While you get your groove on below to this slick urban number, check to see what number other familiar faces fell on when you peep the Hot 100 from this week in 2001 :

Back before everything wasn’t so cheesy and gay. 20 year old in 2001: clean, urban and cool. 20 year old in 2015: corny, pansexual hipster.

Omg I’m still so crazy about Ja like crazy. This man is so beautiful and smooth so he never shaves. Wow.lol

  7. UMo September 3, 2015

2001 wasn’t even that great a year in music, but it was still light years better than today.

BS, 2001 was a fun year of music (and sad for some fans). Janet’s icon special aired, All For You, 8701, Aaliyah, Survivor, Songs In A Minor, Britney, MJ Invincible and his 40 Year Anniversary Special aired. Sad parts were Aaliyah’s death, 9/11 and Glitter (Soundtrack and movie).

Exactly!!! 2001 was one of the best years – if not the best – for Contemporary R&B in the 2000’s. It was the year Alicia Keys and India Arie made their stunning debuts, Aaliyah put out her critically acclaimed and final album, Usher and Destiny’s Child came their own with 8701 and Survivor respectively and Janet came back. Other standouts include MJ, Maxwell and even Ginuwine. Good times 🙂

  8. Stephy September 3, 2015

This is the song Tommy stole from Mariah, and gave to J H-o.

    • Mark111 September 3, 2015

This was the year when MooMoo flopped, music and movie wise.

      • Stephy September 4, 2015

  9. moe September 4, 2015

  10. bunny September 4, 2015

I miss Back in the day JLO. LOOK at the charts now in 2015…..NO BLACK WOMEN. BLACK MEN STILL GO NUMBER 1, but black women, who are not mixed cannot chart.

  11. JOHNVIDAL September 4, 2015

Really? Couldn´t you pick a year with a better week than that wack ass song by JLo??? lmao
Like I´ve said many times in these posts: if you want to see the real difference in quality you have to look for any year before 1999/2000.
