The singer’s enduring popularity is rarely called into question and certainly shouldn’t be following the release of her greatest hits LP on US iTunes.

Unleashed on the Apple platform today, ‘Ultimate’ – a collection of the late songbird’s most revered releases – shot into the top ten of the album count on the digital tally.
As at writing, the compilation sits at #6 (and rising).
Beyond being a nod to how loved Aaliyah still is, it’s also a testament to the commercial viability of her brand.
No word on why the set was serviced “now,” but there are certainly enquiring minds wondering “how” it’s been allowed.
See, like most things pertaining to her former label Blackground (see: JoJo and Toni Braxton), rights to Aaliyah’s music, imaging, and the like have been debatable. A reality that has seen much of her material unavailable to buy online or to listen to services such as Spotify and Apple Music.
One thing is certain though, love for the legend lives on.
I haven’t had a chance to listen but it’s great that her hard core fans finally got this! She was definitely somebody who unfortunately left right when she was on course to take off. R.I.P. ?

Now while I didn’t agree with them taking the music off in the first place, I thought it would’ve been BRILLIANT to wait till her OFFICIAL movie came out to re-release all of her music. But I won’t complain I’m just glad we got this
I disagree. There is no logical reasoning in waiting to release her music. Tina Turner had lots of greatest hit compilation CDs before her official movie came out and when the movie came out they had a special soundrack for the movie. Waiting to link a greatest hits CD with a movie soundtrack is nonsense.

Aaliyah was a class act, I truly loved her. Her swagg, her style, her music and her originality (a la Janet with her own twist) was just EVERYTHING. Definitely cried when she passed and was one of her biggest fans! Truly wish she got to blossom as she was so FRESH!

Aaliyah is a legend, she set the stone for RNB pop stars to cross over in to film. Her style is being emulated by the likes of Rihanna, Tinashe. Her style is iconic today. I hope her family can release her unreleased material or if a label can buy it with partnership with her family and release it, but AALIYAH was a perfectionist and maybe that’s why the family don’t want to materialise on her private things.

Whoever is managing her estate needs to get with the times, nobody’s buying CDs anymore. I had them all back in the day, record stores are deceased and these streaming kids need to get familiar with her timeless catalog.

It’s something special about Aaliyah that goes deeper than her bewitching beauty! After Whitney, Aaliyah’s actually the celebrity death I took the hardest! I remember coming together with friends on that night and not feeling very social for hours after the news broke! I loved Aaliyah’s catalog and cool, yet icy, sensuality! I revisit her music often and I always appreciated the fact that a lot of her music never feels dated!

I want to understand the reasoning for Barry not allowing digital rights to Aaliyah’s music, but then I don’t expect a whole lot of logic from someone who held an artist and her music hostage for years and years. He’s doing the same thing to Aaliyah.
