So, just as our retrospective features ‘From the Vault’ and ‘TGJ Replay’ allow us the chance to re-spin the gems and jams of yesterday of one artist, our newest feature Chart Rewind – a variation of our current Retro Rewind assay – accedes salutes to an entire era of music history.
This week we just have to press play on ‘All I Have’ – the LL Cool J-assisted single found aboard Jennifer Lopez‘s ‘This Is Me…Then’ (click here to read our ode to the full album). Released in December 2002, ‘Have’ – drawing on Debra Laws‘ ‘Very Special’ for its sample – reinforced Lopez’s then-dominance over pop charts and came as a fitting follow-up to the top 5 hit ‘Jenny From the Block.’ Blocking her ‘I’m Real’ co-star Ja Rule from the top spot this week in 2003, ‘All I Have’ held down the chart’s summit for four weeks overall and gave the diva her fourth run atop the Hot 100 (Cool J’s first).

The billboard 200 chart has made great friends with Beyoncé. 6 number ones and counting (all of her albums). She actually has the record for most consecutive number one albums for a female artist. Nice try tho. Why did you even bring her up? PRESSEDT

It did, and I miss it so much!
This was when charts had already started to lose a lot of quality and diversity. At least compared to the 80s and 90s. Most of these R&B and hip hop tracks were generic and absolutely forgettable. There were at least a few great and unique tracks in that lost, but not many. The decrease in quality started with the new millenium (and the downloading era I suppose).
This is definitely not the best Retro Rewind week TGJ has chosen 🙂

You can’t get more generic and forgettable than Whitney, Mariah and Celine with boring, cheesy, disposable, horrible ballads and trainwreck of discographies. Espesically Celine who’s been releasing the same song her entire career.

Any Retro Rewind TGJ has done from the 90s or 80s has been outstanding, while almost any retro Rewind from the 00s is weak. Music wasn´t being as good in the 00s already, not at all. There´s no possible comparison. The diversity and all.

No, that was I’m Real and Ain’t It Funny remixes. Ashanti is literally singing the hooks. Lol And don’t be dissing Ashanti, she was a force in 2001,2002 and 2003.
I forgot Miss You was a top ten. I didn’t pay attention to charts back then, but loved that song and album. It was pretty much her Greatest Hits minus a few songs.
I really miss the 90s era but even the early 00s had amazing music. 2000-2006 or so was an amazing period for the Hip Hop and R&B collaborations. Thanks to Murder Inc (Ja and Ashanti), J.Lo, Lil Jon, Ciara, Beyonce (before she went Pop) Black Eyed Peas, Nelly, Ludacris, Missy Elliott, the list goes on.
