Jermaine Dupri To Be Inducted Into The Songwriters Hall Of Fame Class Of 2018

Published: Tuesday 6th Feb 2018 by Sam

Jermaine Dupri has penned culture shifting smashes for the likes of Mariah Carey, Usher, and JAY-Z.  And now, for his achievements, he’s being rewarded with a spot in the Songwriters Hall Of Fame.

In an announcement made moments ago, it was revealed that Dupri leads the 2018 class of honorees alongside Alan Jackson,  Kool & the Gang, and John Mellencamp.

Also featured are Allee Willis (co-writer of Broadway’s ‘The Color Purple’ and the ‘Friends’ theme), as well as Bill Anderson and Steve Dorff.

Though Dupri’s reach spans many genres such, his releases as an artist have fallen under the Hip-Hop umbrella – thus making him the second Hip-Hop ever act to receive a spot (after JAY-Z became the first last year).

Over the course of his illustrious career, the 45-year-old has co-written colossal hits such as ‘We Belong Together’ [Mariah Carey], ‘Burn’ [Usher], and ‘The First Night’ [Monica].

As such, it goes without saying that the honor is more than deserved.

Speaking on this year’s entrants, the institution’s heads Kenneth Gamble, Leon Huff, and Linda Moran said the following in a joint statement:

“The 2018 roster of Songwriters Hall of Fame inductees is a prodigious representation of creators of cross-genre hits, certain to resonate with everyone. Each year, the slate of songwriters we induct is more diverse and illustrative of the history and contributions that we strive to acknowledge and honor.”

The ceremony, which is in its 49th year, takes place at the Marriott Marquis Hotel on June 14th.

Congrats to JD!

Well deserved, he’s legendary and often gets overlooked for his major contributions to music.

      I agree.

Well deserved, I am very happy for JD as his contributions and accomplishments tend to get overlooked.

Totally agree. The majority of all the major R&B/hip-hop hits from the last 2 decades were written and/or produced by him; Usher wouldn’t be the only male artist to get a Diamond plaque for pure sales this century if it wasn’t for JD, and Mariah Carey would have never come back from irrelevancy if he hadn’t produced her ‘Mimi’ album. This honor is LONG overdue for him.

STFU, MARIAH CAREY IS A ICON. SHE WILL RISE. STOP HATING AND FIND A MAN.

Let’s not get carried away and claim Mariah hasn’t been THE force behind her career since nearly the beginning. Her and JD have a great partnership and they ride for each other. But you will NOT diminish the musical genius that she is. Not on my watch! *Iyanla voice*
