In a fast evolving narrative, the re-telling of the 1992 classic is now tracking a $105 million debut in North America over the Memorial Day holiday weekend.
The Guy Ritchie film, which sees Will Smith take on the role of Genie, is besting initial US forecasts which sat the in ballpark of $75 million – $85 million. Indeed, it already made $86.1 million in its first three days in domestic theaters.
In the US, ‘Aladdin’ (which is top billed by Mena Massoud in the title role and co-stars Naomi Scott as Jasmine) registers the sixth-highest Memorial Day weekend total of all-time, blasting past the $103.4 million ‘The Hangover Part II’ accrued in 2011.
Internationally, it’s also faring amazingly – topping the box office in much of Europe and beyond. Thus far its wracked up $121 million in 56 markets.
With the animated version commanding a colossal $504 million, it looks as though the latest incarnation of ‘Aladdin’ is set to deliver big business at the box office too.
I’m going to go see it tomorrow
Why do critics and the internet keep saying the movie isn’t good?
Because they are haters never underestimate Will box office king Smith!!!
And they said he couldn’t do it..play genie, but when Shaq was one the critcs were for it, he should have another baby I see baby for will Smith
Will Smith is the only star attached to this project. So this is a major comeback for him.
Loved it!! I just think Will was not the best genie IMHO
Will smith still has the sauce to have huge box office openings.
Well I don’t want to discredit Will Smith but all Disney live action movies have performed well at the box office. Except for Winnie the pooh with Ewan McGregor but it caters to a much narrower audience and it still grossed $200 M WW for a $75 M budget.
Aladdin is a Disney classic. The musical is performing well in many countries as an example.
The movie was already set to perform well. Now if you want my opinion I think they portrayed the genie amazingly well, he is as goofy as in the animated version. Will Smith did great, props to him.
I went and saw it yesterday. It was cute and entertaining, which is all I hoped it would be.
