When Lil Nas X proclaimed he would ‘ride til he can’t no more’ in his hit, ‘Old Town Road,’ it’s evident he was referring to the top spot of the Billboard Hot 100.
For, this week brought with it news the 20-year-old – who has been atop the tally for a whopping consecutive 17 weeks – has officially broken Mariah Carey‘s two decade old record for longest running #1 in history.

Lil Nas X just rode his horse all the way to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 for a historic 17 weeks! The up-and-coming rapper’s viral hit officially broke the record as the longest-running No. 1 in the chart’s six-decade history on Monday, July 29.
The record was previously a tie between Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men’s collaboration “One Sweet Day” and Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee and Justin Bieber’s “Despacito (Remix),” which spent 16 weeks at No. 1 in 1995/1996 and 2017, respectively.

Congrats are due to X (born Montero Hill), who’s extended the song’s grip on the top spot by lifting several remixes. Blocking the likes of chart heavy hitters Taylor Swift, Drake, Ariana Grande, and more from the chart’s summit over its 4 month reign, ‘Road’ shows little sign of slowing and industry forecasters are already suggesting the song may be #1 next week too.

Quality wise is definitely unfair. But at least this is kind of a “moment” unlike most of the recent long-running #1s. It has to be said the lack of competition grows bigger and bigger. Back then it was crazy the amount of good songs with quality on the race.

What a sad statement of where music is today and how chart calculations have changed. Thankfully, this takes nothing away from Mariah. Her music is remembered for its quality and that is what makes Mariah a legend.

You can’t tell me anything. I have 10 CDs by Mariah on my shelf and I practically studied “One Sweet Day” as a kid. Mariah has first writing credit on the song, meaning SHE wrote most of it. She also wrote the music with Walter A. Nate sings no more lead or background than anyone else.
I don’t think either singer is better than the other, but if you like Whitney more, congratulations.

I knew this is going to happen and I’m honestly not mad about it. Music has changed so much over the years and so are the consumers’ taste, so I didn’t expect a One Sweet Day type of song to beat the record. I’m happy for Lil Nas X and I’m glad the record was beaten by a black gay man. In this homophobic and racist world we live in, this is a very welcome accomplishment. Music wise, Old Town Road is quite a rare type of music ’cause you don’t hear a lot of country/hip-hop fusion especially in mainstream music. So I can be happy knowing that something like that beat One Sweet Day, which is also a rare gem because a collaboration between a black RNB quartet and a multi-racial diva doesn’t happen very often. So calm down people. One Sweet had its time as the record was never broken until 23 years later. That is a record in itself, and judging how fast artists get hits these days I doubt that record will be broken easily. Congrats, Lil Nas X.
