Many people think that beefs only occur in Hip-Hop (not including the Christina Aguilera’s countless feuds across various genres). However, Pop divas have been known for their battles in the media as well.
One such example is the infamous clash between Mariah Carey and Madonna. Following an almost identical script to the current quarrel between Nicki Minaj and Lil Kim, the duo engaged in a rather public feud in 1995 when Madonna felt threatened by Carey’s meteoric rise to success as her own career had begun to slump.
The way that Carey handled that situation is a shining example of proper media training. Not only did she shut Madonna down just like Whitney Houston and Janet Jackson did after being attacked by the ‘Vogue’ singer themselves, she did it while keeping things classy. Fatality.

She wrote about topics 20+ years ago that artists today would be terrified to touch. Mariah Carey wrote great love songs while Madonna was busy changing the world. Empowerment, spirituality, abuse, death, live, s**, love, religion, the A*** crisis and power are all deeper themes then a typical love ballad from Mariah. Make no mistake I love Mariah Carey and always go see her live but some of her fans seem to think to be a great artist one has to have a remarkable voice. Congratulations on your new album, which has debuted at number one on Billboard’s R’n’B albums and holiday albums charts! Why did you choose to do another Christmas album?
Well, it’s been a while since my first Christmas album, Merry Christmas, and this year I was full of excitement about becoming a mum, and it felt right to make this album. Also, I was really inspired by classic Christmas songs by Bing Crosby and Nat King Cole and festive, timeless, fun Christmas records by the likes of Jackson 5 and Donnie Hathaway. In the spirit of classic Christmas records made in the 1950s, we had a huge orchestra session, and I’ve never experienced anything so beautiful and rich in my musical career as being in the room listening to the lush orchestral moments.
You mum, Patricia Carey, who’s a trained opera singer, is on the track “O Come All Ye Faithful/Hallelujah Chorus” with you. Will we be hearing any more collaborations between you two in the future?
Well, many people already know that my mother is a trained opera singer, so I guess it was only a matter of time before we both got on to a record together. Doing “O Come All Ye Faithful” and the “Hallelujah Chorus” seemed like a perfect choice for both of our voices, which are very different in terms of style and tone and everything. It was lovely experience being in the studio together, and I’m very happy that I have this documented for the rest of my life.
What’s your favourite track on the album, and why?
It’s always difficult when I’m asked that. As a writer and producer, all my songs are very close to me. I love that I have been able to combine festive sounds with more soulful sounds that very talented people like Big Jim Wright have helped me with. Jim’s worked with everybody from Sounds of Blackness to Aretha Franklin; he’s Mo’Nique’s musical director; and we wrote “Fly Like a Bird” together, so this record’s a bit more soulful than Merry Christmas was. Also, I worked with James Poyser from The Roots; we worked together on The Emancipation of Mimi and this time on “When Christmas Comes,” the R’n’B single from this album, which is very inspired by 70s soul music.
You’ve won five Grammy awards and had 18 number-one singles; what is your favourite song that you’ve every written?
All of my songs are special to me, as I write and produce all of them, so each stems from a personal place. Some are about relationships, bad times, good times, special people in my life and amazing moments. I love them all, but “Close My Eyes” and the whole Butterfly album are very special to me. Of course, my Christmas songs are very close to me because I love Christmas so much and listen to them every holiday season.
Rumours about your pregnancy have been non-stop really since you and Nick got married. Did you feel under pressure to start a family?
It’s hard to explain. I am always grateful and know that I have been blessed with my life and experiences. But it gets to the point where you become scared to leave the house in case photos look like you’re pregnant when you’re not. The constant questions from the press, the pressure that puts on you as a woman, the questions from your families and friends — it’s quite overwhelming. It becomes worrying to even go online to read the news or check emails in case you read some mean untruths about yourself. It’s a lot of pressure, but I can handle whatever life throws at me, and we knew when God wanted us to be blessed, we would be.
How did you know that Nick Cannon was The One?
We both knew. There was no denying the way we both felt — it’s just real.
A lot of people said that your relationship with Nick was a publicity stunt. How did you guys feel about those reports at the time? How do you feel about the criticism you and Nick sometimes face about the difference in age?
I try not to pay attention to what people say. People have been saying things about me my whole life. I understand that people have opinions about people in the public eye, but if I focused on that stuff I wouldn’t have time to live. Also, the age difference in my first marriage was double what this is, the opposite way. People always have something to say when they sell papers or gossip because they’re bored or jealous.
Congratulations on your pregnancy! Have you had any weird cravings? How is carrying a child changing now?
Cherry Jell-O — I think you Brits call it jelly! The one thing I am overjoyed about, aside from being blessed finally with the best gift that anyone can ever receive, is the fact that our child will grow up in a new world that I could never have imagined when I was a child. Having Obama in office and bringing a child into the world at this point is totally different than me feeling like an outcast when I was growing up and not feeling like it was okay to be ethnically diverse, and I can’t believe that we have arrived at this point within society. Like many people, I thought it would be a million miles away. I think it’s a little bit easier now because the world has changed just in terms of identifying yourself. That always felt like a strange thing to me as a child; not looking the same as your own mother or father was a very different thing back then, and as my parents weren’t together when I was a kid, I’m happy that my child will have a unity that was lacking in my early life.
Can you recall the story of where you were when you realised you were pregnant? Were you and Nick together>
I was at home. I took a test by myself and then another one and another one. And when Nick got home, I showed him the first, second and third tests, and then we did another one together.
What are your hopes and fears for your child coming into this world?
I imagine, like all other parents-to-be, we just want them to be safe, healthy and happy and be the best human beings that they can be.
How much of a diva are your really?
I’m a strong woman who works extremely hard to be able to have my life the way I want it. So, if that makes me a diva, then okay.
Who do you admire out of the new breed of divas?
I don’t really follow every new act — they come out constantly. There are so many, it’s often hard to keep track, and sometimes they’re here today and gone tomorrow. I admire my friends, like Beyonce and Nicki Minaj — people who seem destined to be doing this for a living with longevity.
What do you make of the new women making waves in the industry, like Rihanna and Willow Smith? Do you feel in competition with them? Are you intimidated by the talent coming through?
I feel there’s always enough room in the charts for everyone. The true stars will have staying power, and only history will show who those are.
You have had a very successful and long-standing career, but it’s also been bumpy along the way. What would you say was your lowest point? Is there anything you regret or would change?
There aren’t many long-standing careers that exist that haven’t had a couple of bumps on the journal — life is full of shade and light. There have been highs and lows, and I take them all in my stride. I know that God will never give me anything to deal with that I can’t handle. You can’t live with regrets — it’s about the journey!”

Whitney was the artist with the highest selling (peaks) in her prime for her 5eras(including the Preacher’s wife) that she ruled in before the heavy drug addiction. She was absent after the 90’s. She was hitting the jackpot over and over! It would have easily been Madonna’s doom if she was committed to finishing the race!
Mariah Carey was certainly the most consistent seller of them all with her body of work (in the last 20 years). For the most part she outsold and attained more hits than Madonna in this time. Thank goodness for that 7 years lead Madonna had, otherwise there would be a newly crowed champion of sales. The fact stands that if you total up all their studio album sales Mariah would come out on top. Madonna has the most greatest hits albums (6 in all) and 51 million generated in those sales. It was a recycling of the same songs being packaged and released over and over.
As far as her competition with Janet, between 1986(where Janet first got established – 2004(the year of the Superbowl horror), she only released 6 studios albums(with 1 greatest hits album). She taken (2) – 3year breaks and (3)- 4year breaks. If she was releasing at the rate Madonna did, I’m sure she would have certainly acquired more than the100million in album sales that was done with very little material out.
Madonna has released 8 albs and 5 G.H. packages. All I’m saying is that Madonna made albums available the way someone would that’s fearful of being too disposable. In the end she benefitted from it most.

And no, it’s not at all about me thinking an artist MUST have a brilliant voice. It depends on what type of artist they are. I enjoy several artists who do not have “remarkable” voices” (thanks for complimenting Mimi BTW ;)) because they compensate with other talents, such as dancing and all round performance/stage presence. From what I remember…BEFORE Madonna made that comment, Mariah said something along the lines of “I grew up on Madonna’s music”, which Madonna obviously took as an offense to her age. The only explanation was jealousy. Mariah was right in the middle of her Daydream album (and if you were alive then, you would know that Daydream was a major event), and Madonna’s career was lacking.
And to the Madonna fans who are *trying* to discredit Mariah’s impact in the music business: give up. They’re both in a league of their own. They’re both on top, but on different mountains. They both had balls, but they swung them in different directions.

The core of Madonna’s artistry is based on her image. It always has been; theres no arguing it. MTV really helped catapult her career with the Lucky Star video, and then with the Like a Virgin performance at the MTV awards. Whereas Mariah’s artistry was (or heavily advertised, anyway) her voice. She said herself that the initial Vision of Love video had her lying on a bed with a bra on, but she refused to follow, because she didn’t want to be seen as the latest “t*** idol” a la Debbie Gibson, Tiffany, etc., but rather as a singer/songwriter.
And to be frank, Madonna’s most groundbreaking work ended by 1987. After that, Mariah took over as the top female trend setter in the industry, until 1998. We haven’t seen another female to succeed Madonna and Mariah…but the only person I can think of right now is GaGa…but her music and image is heavily borrowed from her preceding idols (Madonna, Cher, Cyndi Lauper, Grace Jones)

I pointed out to you if that were true, then her albums wouldn’t have sold nearly as well. There are many artists whose singles are popular but whose album sales falls short. In this day & age, if you only like a couple songs from an artist, you just buy them (or illegally download them) online, you don’t have to buy then entire album for just one or two songs.

Gaga has less #1s, only one and a half albums, has only been out two years, yet has sold 13 million albums, compared to Rihanna who has sold 15-17 mil. So imagine where she’ll be a few years from now. I don’t think it’s out of the question to imagine that she’ll outdo Rihanna in overall album sales pretty soon. It’s not bias, it’s FACTS.

That was funny. I can’t believe people are arguing about album sales and stuff between the two women based off this extremely old clip. This clip is from a very specific time in Madonna and Mariah’s careers and apparently Madonna gave an unsolicited comment/opinion about Mariah ( I don’t know exactly why Madonna said what she did) who was relatively new at the time.
For every artist there is a downswing in POPULARITY especially when you are a vet. No artist can be as hot as they were the first time they were introduced. The buzz always dies but if they are lucky the sales won’t follow.
None of those h*** knew not to come for Whitney. Whitney ain’t the playing type, she will tell you off in a minute. I think out of the four, Mariah is the least intellectual. Madonna, Whitney and Janet all speak well and are articulate. Mariah speaks as if she did not finish 8th grade.
Thank god Mariah use to have talent, cause idk what would have become of her had she not became a singer.
But let the truth be known, Madonna is the bigger Global superstar than all of them, followed by Whitney, then Celine, then Mariah, then Janet. Whitney would have the biggest album sales of all of them, had she released about two more albums in the 90s.
According to the RIAA, Whitney has sold 190mill albums, singles etc. If she sold that much with only 7 studio albums under her belt, imagine what she would have sold had she released more material. Madonna, Celine and Whitney has toured far more, and far more successfully then Mariah. Mariah cannot pack stadiums and arenas. Even with Whitney’s recent tour that received bad reviews, she still packed stadiums and arenas and walked away with a pretty good amount of money.
Mariah has the #1s, but most of them are a result of payola and repressed downloads etc. Mariah may be the biggest secret in the industry that has benefited from overshipped album sales, and #1s that weren;t deserving of being #1.
