Halle Berry will not appear as a transgender character in an upcoming film.
Full story below:
In the film, the Oscar-winner was set to star as a female that transitioned to male. The news of her departure comes after the actress faced large amounts of backlash for misgendering the character multiple times during an Instagram live interview on Friday.
During the chat Berry said:
“Who this woman was is so interesting to me, and that will probably be my next project.”
The ‘Monster Ball’ star then issued an apology on Monday (July 6), and announced that she had pulled out from the role.
The apology reads:
“Over the weekend I had the opportunity to discuss my consideration of an upcoming role as a transgender man, and I’d like to apologize for those remarks. As a cisgender woman, I now understand that I should not have considered this role, and that the transgender community should undeniably have the opportunity to tell their own stories. I am grateful for the guidance and critical conversation over the past few days and will continue to listen, educate and learn from this mistake. I vow to be an ally in using my voice to promote better representation on-screen, both in front of and behind the camera.”
Berry is not the first actress to have faced controversy over playing a transgender character. Scarlett Johansson faced similar backlash in 2018, which caused her to exit her role in ‘Rub and Tug.’
the irony of transgenders being upset at misgendering. this stuff just too confusing.
So sick of the LGBT community crying over every little thing. Everything. Y’all have more rights then the average citizen, more than women and especially more than blacks. There’s a whole MONTH celebrating one culture, not a race, no profound accomplishments or movements but y’all get a month that is longer than Black history month at that.
It’s a MOVIE. Get over yourselves just like y’all got over using condoms and relying on prep. Calm down.
The real question: why does this bother you? Halle did the right thing and owned up to her ignorance and pledged to educate herself.
Your comment does not make LGBTQ people any less oppressed (despite progress) and incase you forgot: black people can be LGBTQ also – so are you saying they need to keep quiet also? I don’t hear you offering any solutions. Chicken heads need to keep quiet – we will not entertain your bigoted point of view. 🤐🤐🤐🖐🏾👉🏾🚪🚪🚪🚪
Mmm…idk… I think backing out of the film completely was too extreme. But hopefully a “no name” can bring just as much attention Halle Barry could have brought and this not being another good solid body of work fallen on deaf ears to the wayside…..
More rights than the average citizen… Yet the LGBTQ+ are illegal and unable to marry in a lot of places. Hmmmm 🤔
MillionaireMan you useless bigot. Your black life doesn’t matter.
This is so dumb. And as a gay man, I’m disgusted about how the current wave of LGBT hypersensitivity. Could Halle have not gotten advised by a real transgender? Bottom line, her name SELLS. LGBT should be glad that someone even WANTS to tell the story as that is a win for the culture. And sorry not sorry but IDGAF about how someone “itentifies” and couldn’t carr less about all these new terms, pronouns, etc. It literally makes me sick.
*lots of typos there but you get it.
💯 Halle DEFINITELY would have brought the mainstream attention needed! Smh.
This is acting. White Chicks was acting. Watermelon Man was acting. Madea is acting. Boys Don’t Cry was acting. Regardless if it was a true story or not. It’s acting.
We do not need a transgender to act in a transgender movie. That’s not acting.
Choosing challenging roles is the reason most actors act. PERIOD!! Relax!
They need to get a solid name for this community because saying LGBTQ is such a mouthful.
Smdh! This is sad! I honestly would have LOVED for her to display this story. There’s no denying she’s a PHENOMENAL actress. But she is also right about the transgender community sharing their truths as well. Plus they’re always complaining about LGBT community not being able to tell their own stories vs heterosexuals fulfilling those roles. So BOOM! Here you go!
I see NO reason why she shouldn’t have played the role. It’s called ACTING. So, black people can’t play Shakespeare and sing opera. Whites can’t voice non-white characters. And so on . . . Might as well go ahead and cancel Brandy and Whitney’s Cinderella, which was considered progress in its day.
So does this mean that trans women should not play Cis women?
The tr@nnyy community is f****** insufferable.
She needs to check her privledge before taking a trans person role. Educate herself and donate to a trans charity
Girl bye
I’m conflicted on this one. While representation on screen for trans people is needed I really wanted to Halle in a good movie role. She hasn’t had one since Monster’s Ball.
