From ‘Grown-ish’ to fairy-ish, TV star Yara Shahidi is the latest name signing on to sprinkle a little magic on Disney’s forthcoming live action adaptation of ‘Peter Pan.’

Shahidi is set to play Tinkerbell in Disney’s live-action Peter Pan redo. She will join Jude Law, who is set to play Captain Hook, and Alexander Molony and Ever Anderson, who will play Peter and Wendy.
David Lowery, who directed Pete’s Dragon for the studio, is on board to helm Peter Pan & Wendy, based on Disney’s 1953 animated movie and co-wrote the script with Toby Halbrooks.
At writing, Disney has not unveiled a tentative release date for the project.

I think there are 2 ways to look at it.
As far as I’m concerned, I don’t care what ethnicity is the actress portraying the role.
But I think studios are going for the easy way by picking black actresses for characters that were introduced as white – even tho I don’t think an anime should be a frozen representation of who a character is – versus actually creating new characters for black, latinos, asians etc. Which I think would be more of a statement from studios.
I think Disney/Pixar, eventually along the way, has tried to represent different countries/cultures etc. with many movies (Pocahontas, Mulan, Princess & the frog, Coco, Moana…).
The live action versions, besides Mulan, are all about the early successes that were not really worried about representing everyone. So I guess this is why they think they have to bring some mixity.
But I think it’s much more gratifying to create new characters instead of flipping cards. Don’t pick a black guy to portray Superman or James Bond, create a new hero and make him latino, African descent, whatever, but have the audacity to create new characters than won’t be thought out as caucasians.

This is actually a nice way to add some diversity to the cast. You have Milla Jovovich’s daughter playing Wendy, why not have a black girl play Tinkerbell? As others have said, a fairy can be any race.
I do think Disney should step their game up and give us a new black lead character in an original story through.

These are classic fairy tales that we all know, love and learn from an early age so to add more diversity to these particular movies can only be a good thing.
