Kylie Minogue towers tall and redefines sweet sixteen with her new album ‘Tension.’
For, the diva’s 16th studio effort has flown in at #1 on the Official UK Album Chart with seismic sales.
Full story below…
Already hotly anticipated following its announcement in May, the project quickly became one of Pop’s most eagerly awaited in the wake of the success of its top 10 charting lead single ‘Padam Padam.’
Its title track, which arrived as its official successor, impressively peaked in the top 20 on the Official UK Singles Chart.
All, as has become apparent, helped create the perfect storm of buzz around the album.
Because, with the numbers tallied and verified, ‘Tension’ has launched atop the converted count with 53,000 units sold.
In doing so, the record outsold the entire top 5 combined.
Minogue’s touchdown with ‘Tension’ sees her tie Coldplay and Bob Dylan on the tally of acts boasting the most #11 albums on the Official UK Album Chart – all have 9 apiece. It’s of note that the only female solo artists with more are Taylor Swift and Madonna (with 10 and 12 respectively).
‘Tension’ joins fellow #1s:
- Kylie (1988)
- Enjoy Yourself (1989)
- Greatest Hits (1992)
- Fever (2001)
- Aphrodite (2010)
- Golden (2018)
- Step Back in Time: The Definitive Collection (2019)
- Disco (2020)

That’ll be the 20+ formats including 12 LP vinyl versions, 6 cassette versions, CD bundles, Signed CD/LP bundles, streaming and digital versions. Lets also not forget its been available for 6 months as a pre-order. Ridiculous, its a tactic all other albums in the top 10 this week were not privileged to. 39’000 of those 50’000 copies sold were physical, mainly vinyl. In real world terms she got there by cheating, 20+ formats is questionable, but its her third time doing this and 50k is not impressive considering how long it been available, and she faced zero competition. Had Drake released his album as planned, she’d be looking at a number 2 entry at best. The downside to all these formats… this as with Golden, Disco, that millionth hits collection, it’ll drop from the top 100 album chart in weeks. Madonna in comparison is still on chart after 40 weeks with her most recent album, she released just 8 formats for it in total inc a ltd ed box set. Its been on chart longer than any Kylie album since 2002. Steps who beat her to number 1 with 18+ formats, fell off the UK album chart in 3 weeks. These multi formats may guarantee a now meaningless number 1, but ultimately it sacrifices longevity and sales.
Why do Madonna fans always go on long rants whenever Kylie has success? You should be mad at your fave for putting out lame music for the past 20 years.
