Aunt Jemima To Be Retired After 130 Years As Owner Acknowledges Brand’s Racial Stereotyping

Published: Wednesday 17th Jun 2020 by Sam

With race at the center of global dialogue, brands are speedily attempting to cut ties with practices that are deemed racially insensitive.

Case in point Quaker Oaks.

For, the food giant has announced that it’s shuttered its Aunt Jemima brand after 130 years.

Full story below…

Acknowledging that the line is rooted in a problematic racial stereotype, the Pepsi-owned company said in a statement:

“As we work to make progress toward racial equality through several initiatives, we also must take a hard look at our portfolio of brands and ensure they reflect our values and meet our consumers’ expectations.”
As CNN notes, Aunt Jemima’s appearance has shape-shifted over time. Its origin and logo are based off the song “Old Aunt Jemima” from a minstrel show performer and was sung by slaves.
Officially, Aunt Jemima (which was started in 1890) is billed as being based on Nancy Green — a “storyteller, cook and missionary worker.”
What hadn’t been acknowledged prominently ’til his point, though, is the fact that Green was born into slavery.

Amen! We will not stand for this! But the slaves that helped create this brand need to receive profits from the new brand. Now can we get L’Oréal canceled since Camila Cabello is still a brand ambassador for them? They’re supporting a racist.

Later… all advertising will be Simpson characters. Yellow alone will offend another group.

If it’s better to eliminate things with a racist origin rather than alter the face or name to change the meaning, when are we going to stop using the n-word? Or is the n-word just one more “blessing of slavery” as pastor Louie Giglio described in the article shared here on TGJ, creating the framework for how we interact with each other? We originate from African kings and queens, but we prefer to brand ourselves the n-word from the days of slavery. Why?

Will these brands compensate the ancestors if the slaves they got rich off? Plenty of brands who stole recipes or inventions by slaves and passed them off as their own how will they take accountability?
