Fans of STARZ’ groundbreaking hit series ‘P-Valley’ may have dropped down and got their collective eagles on when reports surfaced about the show’s season 3 renewal last week, but there’s at least one viewer who wasn’t exactly dancing when the news broke: R&B diva Nicci Gilbert.

In January, Gilbert – best known as part of the 90’s R&B trio Brownstone – made headlines for filing a copyright infringement lawsuit against STARZ in which she claims the network’s ‘P-Valley’ swiped elements of her 2011 musical stage play, ‘Soul Kittens Cabaret,’ without permission.
The STARZ series was created by Katori Hall and is reportedly based on her own 2015 play, ‘Pussy Valley.’
Once news of its season 3 renewal finally hit the Web, Nicci took to social media Friday (October 21) to share her disappointment – even suggesting stress over the “watching the show season after season” has caused her physical ailments that feel like she’s been “punched in the face over and over and having to pay people to make it stop.”

The rant didn’t stop there, however.
Gilbert returned Saturday (October 22) and Sunday (October 23) to double down on the emotional and physical toll the legal battle is taking on her.

Nicci always on that “I created this” type sh*t. That’s why R&B Divas Atlanta failed. She always trying to sue somebody for “her” ideas. Shut up and put your 💵 up. Fight it in court. Sure she can’t afford good counsel. Especially going up against a major network. 🫤
Why would you subject yourself to watching a show if it’s painful for you? Just some attention wh0r3 antics.
If you watch the trailer on Youtube for Nicci play that she says P-Valley is based on you will laugh, it’s just not the same and the play looks poorly written and acted. One is burlesque and the other is strippers, the only thing they seem to have in common is that a gay guy is running the establishments.
There are more similarities like the casino, the new ligh skinned girl in town. I’m not sure if it’s enough to win an IP theft case, but there definitely are undeniable similarities.
I agree @Hmm. It may not be enough to win the case, but to deny the similarities, especially without watching the play, is unfair to Nicci. I bought the play on dvd when it debuted because I am a Fantasua fan. When P Valley premiered, I immediately thought it was similar to “Soul Kitten’s Cabaret.” That was before I knew of a lawsuit.
If she wants us to believe her, we need to see evidence. The premise of PValley isn’t new or original. So exactly which parts of the series were stolen from her?
I watched Soul Kittens on YouTube. It’s kind of obvious. I’m sure that the writer of PValley saw Soul kittens and put her on spin on it. The gay dude running the operation, too characters similarities. Fantasia character. It’s all too obvious. Instead of cabaret chicks she used strippers. The writer knew what she was doing.
Imagine being so soft you become mentally unstable for something like this…. wtf.
I like Nicci, met her twice and it was nothing but hugs and kisses on the cheek. She was nice TO ME..I know R&B Divas didn’t show her in the best light but she was beyond genuine to me and she’s a great talker. I don’t watch P valley but if that was her idea she should get paid for it, period!! Good luck Ms Nicci! I love you!!

Collaborate. Get with them and go make history. Stop complaining. Hop on while it’s hot. Make your own mark in the series. They’d probably love to have you.

And I believe that’s whatever you ask for, be it: recognition, money and or writing & directing. Heck, if you say it should be taken off the air, it should be taken off. If you can prove what you say, then it’s yours to do as you please.

I’m watching the play now and I apologize that Nicci Gilbert is feeling a certain type of way about the PValley but I’m a fan and there is no comparison between the two! Sure, there is a gay club owner in both but the story lines are sooooooo different! I mean completely different. The play is good, but it just don’t catch your attention the way the show does! I think it’s great that there are a lot of known stars acting in this play but it’s far from being similar to PValley.

I truly think that chick is not telling whole truths . So tired of so many people coming for P-valley sound like there is a little jelly going on One show that show how very talented our people are with production direction writing and in front of the camera as well as behind it. But it is always how media like to concern and divided especially when it comes to us , think about all our successes especially in show business. Once again. Deviled and concern .
They need to cut this gal a check so she can sit down and eat her food. I hope P-Valley don’t get cancelled because of this lawsuit though! There is STILL so much transphobia and homophobia in our community and I love seeing these characters brought to life but pay Nicci yall!
