Welcome to another edition of Retro Rewind, the TGJ original feature carved out to honour the work of artists responsible for some of Pop culture’s brightest moments.

Today, as her role of villain on ‘The Real Housewives of Atlanta‘ keeps her name hot on the lips of a new generation of TV lovers, we honour Kenya Moore‘s contributions to music, fashion and film and the often overlooked career she enjoyed before becoming a “Housewife.”

Born on January 24th 1971, Moore rose to stardom aged 22 when she became the winner of Miss USA in 1993.

What came next was a fruitful run in Hollywood which saw her support African-American fronted projects with performances which, for better or worse, would lead her to ‘Housewives’ front door.

Take that journey to the past with us via clips pulled from her projects below…

Vanity Fair captures the media’s move towards increased diversity on their 2nd annual Hollywood Portfolio cover.

Stars, both established and rising, aligned for the striking shot which was lensed by Anne Leibovitz.

Included is Janelle Monae, who has received rave reviews for her roles in ‘Hidden Figures’ and ‘Moonlight’ (both of which received several Oscar nominations).

Also featured is Lupita Nyong’o, whose recent film ‘The Queen Of Katwe’ was critically acclaimed.

We were also elated to spot Aja Naomi King. For, beyond her work on ‘How To Get Away With Murder,’ she’s still managing to shine through the darkness that encased ‘The Birth Of A Nation’ – which she starred in last year alongside Nate Parker.

Is there a double standard in Hollywood when it comes to race and sexual assault?

The answer to that question is yes.
