Iconic! That is fittest of description for this week’s From The Vault pick. Ladies and gents, we salute Britney Spears for her epic showing at MTV‘s 2000 Video Music Awards.

Performing a rendition of one of her many signature songs, ‘Oops, I Did It Again’, Britney delivers here a stunning spectacle, marking the true beginning of her storied relationship with the VMA’s. For many, this was the on set of the transformation of the ‘… Baby One More Time’ belle.
Setting sail with a shortened version of her Darkchild-produced cover of ‘Satisfaction’ by the Rolling Stones, this showing proved to be controversial after a scantily-clad. Spears, who at the time was still catering to an audience of teeny-boppers, stripped down to a sparkling nude outfit on-cue to perform the tongue-in-cheek ‘Oops’.
The said song and parent album of the same name were blockbuster smashes with the track being a global Top 10 hit and the LP debuting at #1. And, as at writing, remains among the best selling albums of all time with sales exceeding 20 millions units.
*****
What’s so special about this performance, as was routine in her early days, was Spears’ ability to “sell” you her product. The choreography in this specific video isn’t particularly intricate or out-of-this-world, her mic stayed “off” the whole show through (after all, it is Britney, b*tch). Yet, her stage presence is just off-the-Richter and she serves up a whole new dimension to a rather cheese-soaked song, relying solely on her natural charisma and the swag she oozed. Both of which see sadly confined to the past.
This is the Britney we became enamored with, not the robot her team have been carting out over the last
six years.
And, while we stay wondering if we will ever see the day the fierce stage-slayer in the clip above returns, we are grateful for artists such as Beyonce, Lady GaGa and Usher for giving us moments as powerful as this VMA’s showing in today’s age.

What are some the most iconic performances of the last few years…for you?

Your thoughts?

Today marks three years since the passing onto eternity of the late, great King of Pop Michael Jackson.

Ever tragic, in that his demise at age 50 was entirely premature, there’s also a certain sweetness to be sourced from the fact that his impact remains inescapable. Think about it: be it in a commercial, video game, blasting from a car, playing in a store, or even a reference from your favourite artist – the music of Michael Jackson is still a feature of our everyday lives. Literally.

Much ado is made about the words “icon” and “legend” – both of which are used these days with careless “flimsy”. Yet, one needn’t rely on the propaganda of PR spin to know what those words represent. For, put simply, Michael Jackson is the blueprint.

Longtime readers will know that it was Michael’s musicality, vision, and precision that birthed my love for music; and ultimately my desire to share that with the masses via the creation of That Grape Juice five years ago. As such, like millions the world over, MJ occupies a special place in my life personally.

And while classics such as ‘Billie Jean’, ‘Black or White’, and ‘Bad’ are etched in mass consciousness, it’s the lyrics from ‘Unbreakable’ – the opener on Jackson’s 2001 opus ‘Invincible’ – which resonate the most for yours truly:

“You can’t believe it, you can’t conceive it
and you can’t touch me, ’cause I’m untouchable
and I know you hate it, and you can’t take it
You’ll never break me, ’cause I’m unbreakable

While, in life, an emphatic response to his many critics, the song’s lyrics carry with them a potent new meaning now that he is no longer with us: love it or loathe it, the legacy of Michael Jackson is insurmountable. Indeed, unbreakable.

With that, there is little else to say than: Michael Joseph Jackson, we salute you. We thank you. As generations to come will learn, greatness lives beyond the body.

Michael Jackson: 1958 – Forever

*******

As the saying goes, greatness lives forever. And just as he did in life, the late Michael Jackson serves as the lead example of this – some 3 years after his passing.

Boasting material and performances that are unquestionably timeless, the King of Pop is set to continue his infinite moonwalk with the 25th anniversary edition of his ‘Bad’ album. A re-packing which, for the first time ever, will see his 1988 tour of the same name released on DVD.

Let’s be honest, aside from being a poor man’s version of Janet‘s ‘Together Again‘, Rihanna‘s ‘Where Have You Been‘ really is all that and then some.

The latest clip in aid of her new album ‘Talk That Talk’, it premiered on Tuesday and follows the release of the record breaking number ‘We Found Love‘.

However, today gave indication that ‘Where‘ is to best ‘Love’s astounding feats.

Why?

When she isn’t rolling in green, you can be sure to  Nicki Minaj in something Pink- whatever the occasion.

However, she took her love for the color to all new heights today- stepping out of her London hotel dressed in the color from head to toe, on her way to her album signing west of the city.

In town in support of the LP, her sighting comes days after her video for ‘Starships‘ was set to drop, prompting fears from fans who have been waiting for the clip since February.

Many thanks to PedSaysOnika.
