As millions across the globe try to process the shocking death of Chadwick Boseman, so too is Ryan Coogler – director of ‘Black Panther.’

In an emotional open letter, the critically acclaimed filmmaker pays tribute to Boseman – who lost his four-year battle with colon cancer on Friday (August 28).

The star’s diagnosis was not known to the public and, as Coogler reveals, his collaborators were none-the-wiser too.

Echoing sentiments shared by Spike Lee (who directed Boseman in recent film ‘Da 5 Bloods’), Coogler shared that not only did he not know the specifics of the icon’s illness, he had actually been deep in the writing process for ‘Black Panther 2.’ A film in which 43-year-old Boseman was set to reprise the title role (T’Challa).
