JoJo‘s tale of tragedy and triumph has been so well-documented over the years her loyal fans probably think they know all there is to know about it.  However, a recent interview with our friends at UPROXX suggests that couldn’t be further from the truth.

Strolling down memory lane to reflect on her humble Foxborough beginnings to being a chart champion with early hits ‘Leave (Get Out),’ ‘Too Little, Too Late,’ and more, the 29-year-old broke down discussing her failed relationship with her first label, Blackground Records, the loss of hundreds of recorded songs, and the lengthy legal battle waged against the imprint to control her own likeness and voice.

The war with the defunct, Barry Hankerson-owned company led her to dizzying heights of depression, substance abuse, and more.

Now, before moving forward with her new album (the recently announced ‘Good to Know’), Jo is putting a period on that dark chapter by shedding light on it in an inspirational tell-all interview.

In a statement released with the track, Freedia referred to the tune as a ‘love anthem’ and said:

“It’s about how love will always conquer fear and hate. I’ve always been about celebrating who you are— no matter what anyone tries to tell you—and this song is meant to inspire people to chase their dreams, no matter what obstacles they face.”

The Weeknd may have suffered the biggest fall from #1 in Hot 100 history when his hit single, ‘Heartless,’ dropped to #17 after reigning atop the tally for just one week, but its follow-up – ‘Blinding Lights’ – continues to shine on the chart.

Aided by exposure afforded from a global Mercedes Benz campaign for which the singer – born Abel Tesfaye – serves as creative director (click here to read more), the Max Martin-produced jam was formerly lifted a #11 peak on the singles chart once its cinematic video made its premiere.

Now, with excitement building for its recently announced parent album, ‘After Hours’ (click here to read more), sales and streaming tallies have seen reawakened interest in the cut.  So much so, it’s been lifted to a new Hot 100 summit.

Just a month after making history with the #2 Hot 100 debut of ‘Yummy’ (as we reported here), the lead single from his latest Billboard 200 chart-topper, ‘Changes,’ Pop singer Justin Bieber has extended a recently established record thanks to the impressive sales and streaming performance of its follow-up, ‘Intentions.’

Produced by Poo Bear, the Quavo-assisted cut debuted at #11 on last week’s Hot 100 (becoming his 29th top 20 single in the process).  Now, thanks to a handsome mix of sales, streaming, and radio play, ‘Intentions’ has ascended to the tally’s topmost dectet this week – an accomplishment that is accompanied by quite the honor.

Alicia Keys joined the likes of Beyonce and Christina Aguilera in giving musical tribute to the late great Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna at their Los Angeles memorial today.

The star’s involvement was notable two-fold.

First, because she was tasked with holding the GRAMMYs together as host just moments after news of Bryant’s tragic death broke at the Staples Center – the very arena today’s event took place. And where Bryant played as an LA Laker for the lion-share of his career.

But also because of the very personal connection the song she played – Beethoven‘s ‘Moonlight Sonata’ – had to the family.

During a eulogy by his best friend given earlier at the event, it was revealed that the NBA legend learnt the famed piece for his wife Vanessa Bryant, who he was missing so dearly at the time.

With the formulaic structure of the music industry being broken down and remoulded, what has emerged has been a trailblazing set of acts earning their stripes on their own accord.

And for many, H.E.R. stands at the forefront.

Signed since age 14, the rising star had been quietly honing her craft – landing career breakthrough in 2017 with hits such as ‘Best Part’ and ‘Focus.’ Critical acclaim would follow for EPs like ‘H.E.R. Vol 1’ and ‘I Used To Know Her.’

Now a two-time GRAMMY Award winner, the 22-year-old’s atypical path has her on the cusp of releasing her first full length studio album.

That Grape Juice caught up with H.E.R. at the 2020 NAACP Image Awards, where she opened up to about the project and more.

Check out her interview with TGJ’s Shar Jossell above.
