Don’t call it a flop!

After weeks of ample teasing, September 13 saw ‘Don’t Call Me Angel’ – the lead single from the Ariana Grande-curated soundtrack of the 2019 ‘Charlie’s Angels’ reboot – take flight on digital and streaming platforms.  Aided by a high octane, Hannah Lux Davis-directed music video, the song soared to the top of iTunes sales charts just hours after its premiere (a success that was mirrored on Spotify charts as well).

By the end of its inaugural tracking week, Billboard reported:

“The song starts at No. 2 on the Digital Song Sales chart, with 26,000 downloads sold, and No. 11 on Streaming Songs, with 26.3 million U.S. streams, in the week ending Sept. 19, according to Nielsen Music. It also drew 7.5 million airplay audience impressions in the week ending Sept. 22…”

The handsome combo of streaming, digital downloads, and radio airplay helped lift the tune to a #13 debut.  A promising start, look inside to see who joins the trio in the top 25 on this week’s edition of the TGJ Chart Check:

With her solo profile soaring, Normani is working the promo trail for viral hit ‘Motivation.’

Her latest stop was the Zach Sang radio show, where she gave great talk.

The candid, music-skewed sit-down saw the 23-year-old dish on her hotly anticipated  album debut (which she confirmed is now due in 2020), touring with Ariana Grande, and carving out her own presence in the Pop cultural landscape.

When speaking on the the latter, she  was quizzed about being compared to some of her idols – namely Beyonce.

Khia‘s feud with the rapper Trina has been giving a fresh pair of arms and legs now that she is at war with her cousin…the aspiring celebrity Bobby Lytes.

In a video which is now the highest trending topic on Twitter, the ‘So Excited’ rapper attacked her new nemesis with the cruel suggestion that his body is deteriorating as a result of HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) and mocked his attempts to garner publicity for himself by harassing Lil Nas X at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards.

Kerry Washington plays a woman swept up into a storm of lies, danger, wickedness and deceit in ‘American Son’, a new Netflix release set for takeoff on November 1st.

The project originally stood as a play (co-produced by Shonda Rhimes,  Jada Pinkett Smith, Gabrielle Union, Nnamdi Asomugha and Steve Stoute) and was picked up by Netflix who have teamed up with Kerry to turn it into a thrilling TV movie.

The 71st Primetime Emmy Awards aired live Sunday night (September 22) from its new network home, FOX, and while the move was trumpeted by the academy, ratings suggest viewers couldn’t have cared less.

Much like this year’s Oscars, the Emmys opted to go host-free and relied solely on a star-studded list of presenters to keep the show moving and deliver the punchlines.  Unknown to the ceremony at the time, their ratings would see them become the punchline.

Ringing in their lowest numbers to date, this year’s figure goes down in history as the first time in history viewership dipped below 7 million.
