While music’s supreme diva Aretha Franklin will forever reign as the ‘Queen of Soul,’ her current reign as the queen of the Billboard Hot 100 is finding itself threatened by a school of relative newcomers – Taylor Swift, Nicki Minaj, and, now, Rihanna.

While Swift and Minaj are quickly on the trail of Franklin’s record for “most entries of any female artist” (Franklin leads with 73 total), the ‘Shake It Off’ country pop singer – by her lonesome – has surpassed Franklin’s historic top 40 record.  With 49 top 40 entries, Taylor is now tied for the “all-time” top spot (among female artists) with Queen of Pop Madonna.

But, before she gets too comfortable on the perch, she is soon to be joined by songbird Rihanna’s surpassing of the legendary ‘Respect’ singer. For, after besting some of the Hot 100 records set by Whitney Houston, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Michael Jackson, The Beatles, and Mariah Carey, it appears Riri has Rere in her sights.  Courtesy of her latest hit, ‘Needed Me,’ the Bajan beauty is set to close the gap between herself and Swift.

Welcome back to TGJ Replay!

Designed much like our ‘Retro Rewind’ and ‘From the Vault’ features, ‘Replay’ is That Grape Juice‘s newest reflective segment to act as a written quest to re-spin the gems and jams of yesterday. Unlike its TGJ retrospective predecessors, ‘Replay’ looks to showcase entire albums (and eras) from a library of pop and Urban pop music hits.

This week we believe it’s about time we revisit ‘Believe’ – the 22nd album of pop icon Cher.

Welcome to the latest TGJ Roundtable!

Over the years, That Grape Juice has established a distinguished voice that – whether loved or loathed – sparks discussion, debate, and on occasion drama!

Though comprised of seasoned writers who share a similar outlook on Urban Pop culture, the idiosyncrasies of the TGJ team members often lend for quite heated debates “behind the scenes.”

Now, we give you a front row seat to the show. In a format similar to ‘The View’ or ‘The Real’, TGJ editors – Sam, David, Rashad, and Joe – get real about the hottest topics in a very candid way.

Today’s roundtable topic asks each anchor about…

Readers of That Grape Juice know what avid music lovers we are – especially of hits past.

So, just as our retrospective features ‘From the Vault’ and ‘TGJ Replay’  allow us the chance to re-spin the gems and jams of yesterday of one artist, our newest feature Chart Rewind – a variation of our current Retro Rewind assay – accedes salutes to an entire era of music history.

This week we’ll go back to our jam ‘Love Will Never Do’ – the 7th and final single from Janet Jackson‘s magnum opus ‘Rhythm Nation.’  Reaching the summit of the Hot 100 this week in 1991, the song knocked nemesis, Madonna, from the top spot with her controversial hit ‘Justify My Love.’   This feat, we’re sure, gave Jan’s fans added satisfaction (as if they didn’t already have enough to boast).  For, ‘Love’ not only made the pop icon the only artist in history to achieve 7 top five singles from one album, it also gave her the distinct honor of being the only artist in history to have a #1 single over three different calendar years from one album.

Talk about iconic!

Get into this week’s ‘Chart Rewind’ below and see what other familiar faces you see in the top 25:

Mariah Carey‘s 2014 effort ‘Me. I Am Mariah…The Elusive Chanteuse’ may have scored major points on a critical front, yet it failed replicate said success where sales were concerned. Indeed, the LP (though one of our favorites of her 00’s releases) saw Mimi sweep up her lowest opening week digits to date.

Today, the star’s camp seek to revive interest in her career with a Las Vegas stint and lucrative partnerships with brands such as MAC and Game of War.’ The goal? To restore the commercial clout she’d possessed during her heyday – or perhaps more realistically following chart-wowing ‘Emancipation.’

Therefore, as she pens the new chapter of her personal  and professional life, TGJ throws on its A&R hat to share what we feel would work best for the vocal butterfly before she drops new cuts.

Will you like what we have to say?

In recent years, streaming has become the new trend in discovering new music.

With the decline in record sales and increase in online/on-demand, it is safe to say that it has been a disruptive entity within the music industry.

And now with streaming impacting chart positions, record “sales,” and RIAA certifications, it raises the question of whether its inclusion is an accurate representation of the public’s perception and reception of the material. Has obtaining a #1 single lost its initial notoriety?

We weigh up after the jump…

Music royals Beyonce and Jay Z stepped out for a night of comedy at Britney Spears‘Piece of Me’ show in Las Vegas yesterday.

We love us some Britney, but it goes without saying that she performs like she has a faulty Nintendo cartridge in her back these days. As such, we’re not quite sure why The Carters attended, but each to their own.

Their appearance at the residency adds to a growing list of shows Bey and Jay have attended over the last month – a list which includes fellow Pop titans Janet Jackson and Madonna.
