Trey Songz took part in a detailed discussion for the latest issue of Billboard magazine. During the interview the singer revealed why most of his newer material is based on sex rather than the artistic depth of his 1st 2 albums. Songz’s new album, ‘Passion, Pain & Pleasure’, hits stores on September 14th. Check out what he had to say below:
“The public likes generic more than they like to admit, so that’s what I gave them — I gave them sexual singles and they ate it up,” Songz says about the string of blatantly sexed-up hits from ‘Ready‘. “I gave them two whole albums before this one — on one I talked about a mother’s love for her son and a father not being there, and on the other I made a song about safe sex. They were well accepted but not as much as the records on ‘Ready.’ The singles were purposely very sexual to capture people’s attention.”
Songz didn’t find it compromising to peddle sex to become a bigger star. In fact, he feels “Ready” wasn’t any more sexual than his previous albums.
“People say this album was highly sexual, but the first two albums were just as sexual,” he says. “If you listen to the ‘Ready’ album, there’s ‘Love Lost’, ‘Black Roses’, ‘Yo Side of the Bed’ – all songs that had nothing to do with sex, but were overlooked because they weren’t the first few singles.”
“I knew ‘I Invented Sex’ was career-defining. After that leaked, the rough mix started playing on radio,” Songz says. “I prepared for ‘Say Aah’ to be a big record — I knew it would be huge. So when it came to shooting the video for ‘I Invented Sex’ I split the budget for ‘Say Aah.’ I think those steps were imperative to the success of this album.” {Source}
So in other words Songz decided to do anything it took to get a hit? While it is understandable that he wanted to take his music in a different direction and enjoy higher levels of success with ‘Ready’, he has to yet to explain why he has chosen to do the same with ‘Passion, Pain & Pleasure’. It seems that Songz either enjoys objectifying the bodies of women in his songs or he is afraid to return to the meager position in the industry that he once occupied as an artist of actual integrity.
This is exactly why Songz might never achieve the level of respect that R. Kelly and others have accomplished in the past. Instead of seeking balance in his music and trying to inspire his listeners to do something other than ‘say ahh’, he has gotten comfortable with his new routine. Diversity is what separates gold-certified artists from those that achieve multi-platinum status. Remember that.

Hypersexualized, insincere lyrics will not give him longevity, especially in the urban R&B genre. Artists singing like that are dime a dozen. I would say that to Trey and Chris. Prince and R. Kelly were both artists that talked about sex..there was still artistry behind the music. Also both of their most memorable songs have aspects of humanity included in them too.

I don’t have anything against Trey, but a few moderately received hits on the R&B charts does not a superstar make. He is going to have to think up a heavier hitting approach if he seeks Usher level recognition. His presence is underwhelming outside of the urban community, as well as internationally. But it sounds like he’s ready and willing to put in the work, so best of luck to him.

So what? I agree with Trey. It really isn’t that much of a change from his first two albums. The songs are more commercial, but the sexual content has always been there. Furthermore, like he said in interview, there were plenty of songs on “Ready” that didn’t have a sexual undercurrent. Similarly, his new single “Can’t Be Friends” isn’t oversexed either. I think people drive this ‘issue’ over board. My only thing is that I wished he wouldn’t have addressed it at all because it really is a non-issue. He crafted one of the best R&B albums of 2009 and that can never be taken away from him.

@Baron…Trey will NOT get Usher recognition unless he is willing to learn some dance moves too. Usher and Chris Brown have a history of being more musically successful than Trey Songz because they can sing and dance (and are attractive). He has to have all those elements. If he is attractive and is only going to sing and stand there, then he needs to become a STELLAR singer, almost Luther Vandross-like. Singers with extraordinary careers are either multi-talented (songwriter/singer/dancer/producer) or can do one thing HELLA GREAT (singers like Whitney, Mariah, Luther).

Now that he switched it up and he got some hits now you wanna say “well he’ll never be like usher or prince” What more do you want? Because the fixed media is currently promoting him does not mean he is all that meaningful or successful. It just means he is the “flavor or the moment” and if you haven’t heard, things change from moment to moment! I believe it was PAIT above who said, both Chris and Usher have more of an overall appeal because of their multi-talents. Trey is simply average. Average looking, average sounding and now reduced to only making average (basic) sex songs. I have nothing against Trey but someone from the UK/Africa/Asia/South America can come on over and steal the spotlight from him quickly! I have never been a big R.Kelly fan but even I can acknowledge that he has had a significant 20 yr. impact on the music industry. Unless Trey changes things, I doubt if I will be able to say the samee about him!
Oh and let me add, you cannot compare Chris Brown’s CD debute to anyone elses because no one else had their CD blocked like Chris’. Remember he had one fight with Satan and they would not promote his CD. It’s ashame he couldn’t be more “Eminem-like” so he could have beaten Satan down many times as Eminem did his wife and still have his music support worldwide!

Music has changed and these younger players has no respect and hip hop is teaching violence and rapes of all sorts. Come on here look how Lil Wayne & Drake brought out underage girls on-stage during Michael Jackson’s tribute on B.E.T.. tasteless and shameful.
Trey has captivated the young teens and it more of a mockery as a 25 year old would think he can sell a million or more by doing the Justin Beiber thing. Goat Songz Baa can’t even touch Usher in music or dance also Chris Brown.
But for you bloggers who pulls for Trey needs some reminder what real music use to be and how people got there, just listen to your Mom and /dads old jams and hear those beautiful lyrics and harmony. Sample over reverbs and edits will not save Trey, vocally R Kelly can’t be matched and he has replaced the Luther Vandross’es and Mj’s he has the grace of what once is and always will be! Classic music.
Goat Songz has song and made his last and first gold album because the next will be toilet of my terrible breakfast I ate in the morning.

I think Trey Songz is selling himself short if he thinks “sex music” is the only way he can acheive success. If that is the direction he is taking with this next album, it will get tired very quickly. I’m already over it. Maybe the tween girls will eat that shit up, but grown ass people are over it. Truth be told, the song and video for “Yo Side Of The Bed” impressed me much more than his moves in “I Invented Sex” or “Neighbors Know My Name.” So he has proved to me that he can reach a deeper emotional level. Ok, you went with what sells, that is fine, but if you wish to stand out and be bold and different, or just more classier like that of Raheim, Jaheim, or Anthony Hamilton, you could have done some substance music.
