New Song: Mario – ‘The Walls (ft. Fabolous)’

Published: Wednesday 7th Sep 2011 by Sam

Mario‘s back.

The soulful crooner is looking to right the wrongs of his last LP ‘DNA’, with its as yet untitled follow-up, the lead single for which premiered moments ago.

Produced and penned by the formidable force that is Rico Love, the track – titled ‘The Walls’ – features Fabolous.

Solid on paper? Perhaps. Does it have what it takes to return the 25 year old to the heights he enjoyed with ‘Let Me Love You’? Listen for yourself after the jump…

Having long maintained 2007’s ‘Go!’ to be not only Mario’s best effort, but one of modern R&B’s proudest moments, ‘The Walls’ is pleasant return to the ‘classic’ sound which made the former so stellar. Does it live up to the bar established by cuts such as ‘Crying Out For Me’ and ‘Music for Love’? Sadly no. Problematic for after a string of poorly charting releases, this needed to strike a chord both qualitatively and on the hit Richter. Still, as Kelly Rowland‘s ‘Motivation’ showed, solid R&B can still defy the odds and hit it big. For Mr Barrett’s sake it needs to.

Look out for his new album late this year/early next.

  9. ASAP (As Sincere As Possible) September 7, 2011

    It’s a great song.Very smooth.I don’t think it 100% flatters his voice, but it’s still a very good track.
@CARL When he said “classic r’n’b'” he most probably meant “traditional r’n’b'”.

  10. MRS. Bumble Kee September 7, 2011

    Smooth, definitely feeling it.

  11. JOE FRANCO September 7, 2011

  12. YEABEY WON’T DANCE 4 U September 7, 2011

I see it as an R&B Top 10! It sounds like an album filler type of song though! I like it…..

  13. Robier September 7, 2011

  14. tyra September 7, 2011

  15. THE RETURN OF THE GREAT LACEFRONCE. September 7, 2011

FLOP song for a FLOP artist.

  16. SkyWeezy September 7, 2011

This song is sooooo bland. It’s album filler at best. Without having heard much other possible material from Mario’s upcoming album, I’ll have to say that his first single should be his song “Da Overflow.” That song is straight FIRE!!! It’s totally unique and unlike anything on the radio right now. You can download it at http://www.HotNewHipHop.com or probably just Google or YouTube it. But “Da Overflow” is the best song I’ve heard from Mario is YEEEEEEEEARS. Real talk.

  17. MichaelAngelo September 7, 2011

Damn Beyonce must be “That Bytch”! SHe get’s the treatment in other atrists posts. Sounds like the mark of a legend to me.

I like it ….I have always supported Mario, he is a true R&B singer/star..GOD bless him (great voice) nice song….

  19. Bitter b****** make me sick……. Throw up (queenbey) September 7, 2011

I like it, and I like his voice too, its so smooth!

Plus he’s not bad to look at 😉 I still listen to his song ‘Break Up’ from time to time…

  20. lol September 7, 2011

ive never liked the tone of his voice , but he can sing .there no denying that .. but i dont like this song . its sounds like every early 2000 and late 90’s rnb song .ive just heard it all before .
i hope he gets a hit though

  21. deangelo September 7, 2011

I LIKE IT SOUNDS LIKE A HIT TO ME

  22. SkyWeezy September 7, 2011

I’m tellin’ y’all. “Da Overflow” (Or is it “Overflow”?) is HOT. That should be his next single, unless he has something hotter coming on the new album that we haven’t heard yet. But the hook for “Da Overflow” is smooth and different. I really like it. Here’s the YouTube link. It’s downloadable on http://www.HotNewHipHop.com and probably through Google too. I’m just advocating for Mario because he has all talent in the world. He just needs to pick the RIGHT material again.

  23. GETONMYLEVEL September 7, 2011

I mean I like it, but I’m not hype about it…I do rock with mario I donno her needs a uptempo track

  24. JAYLA September 7, 2011

why do this site even post R&B music, all these gays want to hear is pop, Gaga, and uptempo

  25. B Lamont September 7, 2011

    I like this.

On a side note, why do some people feel the need to call artists FLOPS. Can you do better?? I think not, so stop hatin on other people, especially those who are making quality music.

  26. Casual September 7, 2011

Sounds early 90s, but not in a good way.

  27. ㄕѺㄕ 尺Ѻㄚムしイㄚ ( 尺ŲÐ乇 乃Ѻㄚ ) September 7, 2011

    love it ! 9.5/10

reminds me of trey songz songs maybe……….

  28. Kisses September 7, 2011

The last song I liked from Mario is “How Could You”. That song itself is concrete proof that he can do better than this. This song is just okay, IMO

  29. NE-YO*STAN September 7, 2011

It’s alright. Rico’s able to deliver both hits and misses to artists. I don’t know for sure where this one resides. It’s more of a “let’s play this one after sunset” type track. Can’t see myself cruising to it during the day (but, then again…). It’s a good album track, even though Fabolous’ rap was way off-point. Not single-worthy. He shoulda gone for that Underdogs track for that.

  30. nice_gurl September 7, 2011

I like anything r&b, so of course I love it.

  31. SkyWeezy September 7, 2011

@Jayla – “why do this site even post R&B music, all these gays want to hear is pop, Gaga, and uptempo” <– BUWAHAHA!!! Hilarious!

  32. VA STAND UP!!! September 7, 2011

I love it! Its such a smooth r&b jam and Mario’s vocals are on point and even though it’s about s** he didn’t get all explicit like so many others tend to do. I’m glad he didn’t go that route! Fab was a nice addition too. He is the perfect rapper for a record like this cause he is not the type of rapper whose yelling all over the track, his verse is as smooth as Mario’s vocals. Plus it’s good to see someone other than Lil Wayne, Drake or Rick Ross all the damn time.

I’ve always loved Mario’s voice and I think he has delivered some solid r&b joints in his career it’s just that I lose interest in him so quick. He usually has like a really hot record out every couple of years, then the follow up single isn’t as strong as the first and then the album is quickly forgotten. He doesn’t really stand out at all either. There is nothing interesting about him, he just kinda blends in with all the other r&b dudes like Samme, Lloyd, etc. He’s just so easy to forget about. *shrugs*

I don’t know how it will do as a first single but I do think it could do well on the urban charts. Good luck to him.

  33. RICK September 8, 2011

He needs something with more substance and message. People fell in love with Let Me Love You because it was easy to feel the words and sing along, but are people going to walk around the office or have the radio on singing, “Da##, that girl…” ? I don’t think so.

  34. CALL ME HATEERRRRR September 8, 2011

THIS SITE KILL ME…MARIO BEEN KILLING R&B WHEN KELLY ROWLAND WAS TRYING OTHER THINGS AND FINALLY CAME ACROSS THE RIGHT WRITER

GIVE MARIO HIS PROPS!! THIS N**** IS R&B AND KELLY ROWLAND IS JUST “SUPERFICIAL”!!!

  35. azwidohwi christopher October 4, 2011

the guy is talented but can not express his talent

  36. Angel October 22, 2012

I love this song! It is hot like all the songs on the new Restoration album. Mario is one of the best singers since the 1990s with Braid My Hair.
