Iggy Azalea’s ‘Slavery’ Remark: Did The World Overreact?

Published: Tuesday 13th Mar 2012 by David

Sometimes, a curse can come in the guise of gift.

Not sure what we mean? Take Iggy Azalea‘s ‘XXL Freshman Cover‘ for example. While it cemented her status as Rap’s  leading debutante, it also unearthed a controversy so ugly, the likes of Max Clifford would think twice about before getting involved with.

For, after failing to make the cover herself, fellow Femcee Azealia Banks questioned a lyric spat by Azalea in ‘D.R.U.G.S’.

A lyric, which saw her label herself a ‘runaway slave master’.

Details below…

“Tire marks tire marks/Finish line with the fire marks /When the relay starts Ima run away slave….master”

In response to the controversy, Iggy responsded:

“Im writing you today to address a lyric I said a few months ago in one of my songs that I feel has been used to unfairly slander my character and paint me as a racist person.

Kendrick Lamar is one of my favorite artists and I loved his song ‘Look Out for Detox’ so much I decided to do my own version of it last year. The lyrics I wrote follow the original version closely;

One lyric in particular has offended a lot of people and for that, I apologize. The artist’s lyric was: “when the relay starts I’m a runway slave” My lyric was: “when the relay starts I’m a runaway slave…Master, sh*tting on the past gotta spit it like a pastor This is a metaphoric take on an originally literal lyric, and I was never trying to say I am a slave owner.”

However, despite the well written ‘apology’, there are some who still question the lyric- and why she showed no interested in publicly addressing it until Banks brought it up.

On the flip side, while some have labelled Azealia a ‘hater’ for pointing out Iggy herself admits was ‘tacky’, it is worth asking:

*Many thanks to MJ.

I don’t think the ‘world’ cares.

I think Azealia Banks cares a lot, but with her fondness of using the N word you can tell that concern popped up more out of jealousy than anything else.

I think if you were actually listened to Iggy’s music then you got the line and understood it. the reference as well as what the whole thing meant when put together.

It does suck that had to pop up, and if not for her skin color no one would have batted and eye at the line. Oh well, she addressed it. I don’t think she wants that to be all anyone cares about or focuses on so she wanted to avoid it since she knew what Azealia was trying to do.

black madonna your argument is flawed.
If your way of thinking was used in the real world, thieves and fraudsters would be walking the streets with ease because ‘there are worse things out there’.
It’s not a competition, Iggys ignorance isnt cancelled out because other rappers use the N word or say worse.
I for one think shes really cool and i like her because she seems smart, well travelled and opinionated but i do think she should beware of the men around her. Because she really has the potential to be a HUGE STAR, but wont get there if she lets ‘hip hop heads’ dictate how far ‘left she goes.

OK LET ME GET THIS STRAIGHT… EMENIM CAN RAP ABOUT KILLING HIS GIRLFRIEND AND GET PRAISED FOR.. TYLER THE CREATER CAN RAP ABOUT RAPING AND KILLING GIRLS AND HE GETS PRAISED FOR IT.. MOST RAPPERS CAN RAP ABOUT SELLING DRUGS, PIMPING WOMEN AND KILLING PEOPLE…EVEN CAN NAME A SONG “N***** IN PARIS” AND GET PRAISED TO THE HIGHEST HEAVENS FOR PEOPLE SO “LYRICAL”…. BUT LORD FORBID A WHITE GIRL SAY ANYTHING ABOUT SLAVERY…*ROLLS EYES*

  7. aishaaguilerakeys March 13, 2012

I like Izzy and yet I’m Black. I seriously think Azalea or however her name is spelled brought this up out of jealousy, but it’s a good thing Iggy apologized.

  8. coco March 13, 2012

I’m just hateful cuz these white people can seriously get away with a lot nowadays…in south africa ur a** would be dealt with big time….i.e: the little black kid who just got killed by the white neighborhood watcher is more serious than this tramp right here…how come there is no arrest? if a black man killed a white boy….let me tell u that dat brotha would get life, so black people stand up….

Whether or not the world over reacted is neither here no there
the fact remains that this issue is giving her the fame she seeks
at the end of the day there’s no such thing as bad publicity

Oh God, not another one. This controversy is so false–she’s thriving off this attention. “They” took Hip-Hop culture from us a long time ago, and it wasn’t because of “rappers” it was the record executives shaping and controlling the music we made and encouraging cross-over garbage. This girl will be successful because she’s pretty and has attitude. She’ll be bigger than any of her black competition, except maybe Nicki Minaj, who has already made herself into a well-lit, pointy nosed, blonde wig-wearing barbie doll, cross-over cartoon character.

This isn’t the time for Lauryn Hill and Missy Elliot and Aaliyah. People need to wake up. This chick can say whatever she wants and people will let it go. She’s from australia and she has no clue about Black culture, she’s trying to be “cool” and that’s IT.

  12. MISHKA March 13, 2012

    “The world” ? Chile, please.

She should have apologized a long time ago. She knew exactly what she was doing. I guess T.I the one who made her do so, and I find it pathetic. She’s from Australia, she knows what her people did to Indigenous Australians during decades.

But because she’s MC Blondie, she’ll have it good and better than Az. Banks. See y’all when she’ll make it to Rolling Stone and Vogue covers. Before Nicki Minaj.

This ugly bish will get no where. The hardest group to get over slavery are black American women. Yes I said women, not girls. Women will not even give her a light of day. A. Banks may not be my favorite rapper but she stepped up and said something. Good thing. No one is checking for this girl. Heck I’m not a Kreyshawn fan either and I think she will be better received by the black community than this iggy chick. She’s a gimmick. My 6 year old nephew spit harder than her. Someone take this trash to the yard.

Good point black madonna how can someone be racist who has a black boyfriend of course they are not! do you know anything about her racial back ground anyway ? NO you know nothing of her people so what the f*** does azalea banks or any other person out there know NOTHING. Iggy gets shitted on all the time for being white and a chick that is racist people have been very quick to label her. Iggy says nothing back to people NOTHING Azalea banks is a racist for calling her a white chick iggy didnt call anyone anything. Only people ignorant to english language who take things totally literally and have no idea didnt get what she was saying. its just azalea banks is jealous a f*** and if she felt this way why did it take her so long to say something because she is trying to take out competition not through talent but through underhanded tactics. the real person you should be questioning is azalea banks who is obviously not just a racist but also just look at her tweets she is prejudiced against the gay community and other minority groups. How about grape juice haul her over the coals and ask banks for some answers to those comments!!!!

  15. gaaglooo! March 13, 2012

I’m black and i don’t see anything racist about her! She’s still my b**** and I love her, she’s fun!! Daaamn you sensitive people, stop crying wolf while you shut your mouse and eat it when Nicki Minaj call you: ” Nappy H***”!

  16. SHESDUMB March 13, 2012

    WHO IS SHE???
SHE’S JUST A BLONDE GIRL WITH A DECENT FACE AND WIDE HIPS. HER FEW MINUTES WILL BE UP IN A FEW MONTHS.

  17. mobwife March 13, 2012

I’m watching racist America lead by the disgusting feminazi klan tearing down both Chris Brown and Rihanna on a regular basis. You can’t visit a website, read a mag or turn on an entertainment show wihtout watching white people and stupid blacks lining-up to tear the two of them down because three years ago they had a fight! Yet this no named dirty b**ch thinks she can flap her mouth and say some sh** like that? Nothing in America has change well nothing but the strength, courage, and dignity of blacks! Therefore, it’s all good right after all she’s a “s**** master” who could argue with her? T.I. must have bumped his head in the prison showers for endorsing this crap!

  18. Greg March 13, 2012

Her manager & boyfriend & probably everyone else around her is black, so racist? no

    Irregardless, she’s an ignorant ass b**** & I don’t f*** with it…

  19. mobwife March 13, 2012

Wait, I know I didn’t just read someone post that this dirty no named slore couldn’t possible be racist because she held a black p**is between her teeth and her tonsils? Is that right? “Jungle Fever ” changes nothing remember Strom Thurmond had a BLACK DAUGHTER!

Co signs with Auntie Jackie. I would like to know if she would of said something about gay people how fast this would of been in the media and how fast they would of band this song these celebrities would have been all over this topic tryna run her ass out of town

    • JoJo (istan4rihanna) October 30, 2012

yet if she had something bad to say about the gays everyone will jump out the window but when eminem and tyler the creator say it . its a totally different story

  22. ultramagnetic March 15, 2012

    1) I have to agree with those who said I don’t think this girl is a racist.
    2) To me the line seems like it’s supposed to sort of “turn things on their head”. Like it’s not “slavemaster” but s**** … master – like “you thought i was the s**** but I have turned the tables!” Like a Spartacus thing, where the oppressed rise up, etc.
    3) It was a poorly chosen line, but probably naive. It doesn’t seem like she is running around using the n-word like some of these other white rappers right now, which I think is in incredibly poor taste, but apparently endorsed (at least tacitly) by the likes of Odd Future, Gucci Mane and others.
    4) Agree that a resurgence of a Lauryn Hill type era would be a very good thing.

  23. HaYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY March 25, 2012

i think its a sick line, and thats it. Childish gambino had a similar type themed line and no one cared, so whatever. shes good as far as im concerned. its not that serious. Dwelling on the past only makes it more relevent and present.

  24. HaYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY March 27, 2012

i know i already commented, but ive been getting into her more since i last poster, and shes GOOD AS F*** in my opinion. im loving her music and if her album comes out in june and its hot, ima cop it!!!!!

Follow me on twitter at….. jkkk. thats ghetto
