Melody Thorton Wails The National Anthem At L.A. Marathon

Up until this year Melody Thorton was best known for the obligatory belted ad-libs found at the end of every Pussycat Dolls song. Since then Melody has been hard at work on her debut album, determined to make a name for herself as a solo artist before Nicole Scherzinger can.

On the heels of releasing her 10-track mixtape, ‘P.O.Y.B.L. (Piss On Your Black List)’ and a music video for ‘Lipstick & Guilt’, Thorton earned herself a gig singing ‘The Star Spangled Banner’ at the L.A. Marathon.

The national anthem is no easy song to sing as it requires a singer’s singer to appropriately tackle the technical complexity of its melody and the challenging vocal it demands.

Listen to Thorton belt her way through America’s favorite song after the jump and sound-off below.

This former pussycat implored a refreshing level of control on her voice that’s been missing from majority of her recordings.

While it wasn’t a pitch perfect performance, Thorton should be praised for maintaining a firm grip on her vocal reigns by not letting her big voice get the best of her. The 27-year-old even gave Mariah Carey-tease with an impressive head voice crescendo on the word “Free” that was particularly stunning.

Melody deserves an A for effort, and B for execution. Good stuff!

I like the rendention a lot . The voice arrangement was Whiney all the way with a dash of Mariah on the free.

  7. ASAP (As Sincere As Possible) March 19, 2012

Good! She has a great voice, all she needs is control. She does tend to oversing at times (e.g: the intro of her mixtape)

With a little more work on her control, I think, vocally, she has what it takes to be a top artist. She can sing, and regardless to what anyone says, she has some insane power. She just needs a little more fine tuning and she is gonna kill it.

That was amazing! Sure she needs a lil fine tuning and control but her range and power are very unique. Plus, not everyone can riff on the word “free” so well nor the final word, “brave”. I’m liking her more and more. Shame she

    A) Was in such a tacky group that made her like a a second rate entertainer

    and

    B) Named her mixtape “P*** On Your Black List” Such an un-Lady-like title from such a class act! 🙁

    But yeah she’s great!

  16. Popeater March 19, 2012

i’m a fan, but not feeling it. She needs a vocal coach to polish her voice.

  17. SimpleGuy March 19, 2012

    This girl can sing!!

  18. NewF*YorkBabe. March 19, 2012

    Oh Man!! HOT.
But yha, polish. that’s what she needs, just a bit more vocal, and image consulting and girl sounds almost (but never touching) Mariah carey, christ.
    Good work Melody.
