Rating Rihanna: Rih-Visiting A HistoRIH of Hits

rihannaalbum copy Rating Rihanna: Rih Visiting A HistoRIH of Hits

Rihanna is indeed pop’s premier polarizer.

With seven albums in just as many years, the Grammy-winner has amassed a wealth of hits that trounce that of rival singers who have twice her tenure (and talent).

But, even with the history books singing her praises and logging new entries of her achievements on a (seemingly) weekly basis, some music buyers are just not sold on Rihanna…

Yes, those enlisted in her faithful #Navy exalt their captain’s every move, but other music lovers seem reluctant to board the cruise ship of mediocrity.  With a menu full of popcorn and fly-by-night hits, some argue this, alongside the ‘Hard’ hitmaker’s inconsistent live showings, ultimately dismiss her ability to truly serve as pop’s top diva.

Be that as it may, that hasn’t stopped Rih’s reign over singles charts with 12 #1s and over 20 top 20s.  While the same cannot be said for the albums that birthed those singles, we turn to you to ask:

With 7 albums under her belt and ‘Unapologetic’ being the first to reach #1, do you feel it is the most deserving of such honor?

If not, tell us below…which of her albums represent her best body of work to date?

Your thoughts?

i agree 100% @mosta that era changed my view on her,for a minute i became a fan, then i rebuked my fan card once she dropped TTT(her worst album ever, along with the first 2).She hasn’t been able to capture me they way she did with LOUD with any of her releases thereafter. I’ll just stick to Slayonce who never disappoints music wise :)

There was a lot of Alternative Rock on the album. Ok, I will admit hat a lot was fused with some R&B but majority of it was Alternative Rock and Adult Contemporary.

        Hard (Urban)

Stupid in love (Adult Contemporary pop)

        Rockstar 101 (Alternative Rock)

Russian Roulette (mix of Adult Contemporary and

Where did IASF sell 7 million? It sold like 6 million, which is 500K less than LOUD.

IASF only sold 2 million copies in Europe, there’s no way it sold 7 million, that number is inflated.

IASF sold 2.7kk in Europe, dumb bitch. You’re definitely misinformed, bitch. IASF definitely sold over +7kk in the entire world, keep pressed. I counted using OFFICIAL numbers, IASF sold +7kk without South America (minus Brazil), Africa and Asia (minus Japan). Check IFPI, they have IASF at shipping 2 million to Europe, not selling 2 million. You are lying with it selling 2.7 million in Europe. That 7 million records sold WW is inflated, it did just under LOUD.

      • @Mrs Robyn Brown (Beyonce’s Weave)

LOL. You’re so dumb, bitch. LOL. LOL. LOL. First of all, sales and shipment are completly different things. LMFAO. It shows that your acknowledgement of the music industry is really limited.
IASF sold +3 million in USA and only got 2x Platinum certification (aka 2 million copies shipped). Do you know why? Because Beyoncé/her label didn’t pay RIAA to certify her album as 3x Platinum. LOL. That’s it. ‘The Beyoncé Experience’ (DVD) sold +400k and only got 3xP. Dangerously In Love sold +4.9kk but it only got certification for 4xP. Beyoncé could easily pay IFPI to certify IASF as 3xP, but she doesn’t want. LIVE WITH IT.
You can sell 10 million albums and don’t even get a certification and you can also sell 500k and get a Platinum certification. See Gimmicki Minaj’s last album, it sold 600k and it got 1xP certification.
Shipments aren’t album sold, bitch. Shipments just show that AT LEAST a X amount of copies of an album hit the stores.
P.S. Yeah, the artist/label needs to pay to get a certification. How much? I don’t know.
P.S.2. If you were used to follow charts, you’d know all that and you’d know that it’s pretty common thing to happen.

  • Rated R all the way. Her first solid concept album with consistent visuals that coincided with the lyrics and content on the album. The tour was able to be set up cohesively as well. The fashion was on point, the bold and straight-froward attitude, the hairstyles, just everything about this era was solid. Hasn’t been able to top this era yet.
SIDENOTE: I still feel G4L should’ve been released as a promo single like Wait Your Turn. The video concept would’ve been dope with Rihanna being in an all female sexy gang of assassins, shot in black and white. I think all the videos should have been cinematic and left the audience on a cliff hanger until the next video so the single choices and videos all ran together. THAT would’ve put that era further over the top and would’ve been different from anything out during it’s time.

      • I know right!! “Russian Roulette” would be a good start to the mini movie, then head into the promo single “G4L” were Rihanna’s gang of assassins break her free from being captured in the first video.

Then the second official single would again be “Hard” with this video focusing on Rihanna leading her gang and living a life of crime.

Then slow it down with “Photographs” were in this video she’d be on the run living in a motel room looking back at photos of her past life and the video explaining why she lives the life she does.

Then end the movie with “Rockstar” were she’s found and has to fight off everyone who was after her in a bad ass action sequence which ended the era.

“Rude Boy” could’ve still been released but with no video OR have the video take place in between “Hard” and “Photographs” we’re the video is actually a dream she’s having then she wakes up and is followed by the “Photographs” video.

“Te Amo” could’ve still been released also but set two years after “Rockstar” were she’s living in spain and the same video used already would have been fine. “Te Amo” would still only be an international release though..

So many creative things they could’ve done with this era due to such a well though out album.

Those three are her best albums, followed by “Talk That Talk”, “Unapologetic” have some good songs in it but is not entirely good as those above, “Rated R” is her best album but it wasn’t successful so commercially i think “Loud” should have been #1, everything about that era was flawless.

My favorite song by her is “Fire Bomb”, that song is perfection, “Love Without Tragedy / Mother Mary” comes closer too and i still don’t understand why, why she didn’t put “Hole In My Head” in the STANDARD EDITION of “Rated R”, that was my Jam.

So far, it has started off with a great start. 777 Tour, #1 Album, and #1 Single…. Seems good to me. Especially since Rihanna has change up her normal upbeat lead singles. Diamonds and Stay are obviously a different approach to her era. (see WFL-You Da One: Only Girl-What’s My Name, Umbrella-Shut Up and Drive,, Pon De Replay-If It’s Luvin That You Want)

  • I can’t put Unapologetic in the list yet as I’ve only streamed it a couple of times (busy) and haven’t really decided how many songs I like on there yet. As for the others:
    1. Rated R
    2.. Loud
    3. Talk that Talk
    4. GGGB
I can’t rate the first two as I’m not familiar with her early work, apart from the odd single here and there ;o)

  • It’s funny that the songs I like most are from the albums that rank the highest in this poll. Now looking back, I realized that Loud deserves a little respect. It was a refreshing era for Rihanna. Rated R felt like it was a more grown up Rihanna and some of her all time best songs came from that album. Still hands down, the winner for me is GGGB. It’s simply her most listenable album to date.

Great post, do more of these for other artists. :)

Unapologetic shoulda been a rerelease of rated r. Talk that talk shoulda never been made and Loud shoulda sold more cuz I liked it better than GGGB. The rest of her albums r forgettable tho. I still think she’s a singles artist tho. I wouldn’t want to hear a full album of her nasal wailing TBH…..

  • good girl gone bad is seem as her best album bc of the explosion she had and the huge success she became. she was seem as a 1 hit wonder possibly with pon de replay and then as a cute girl with a few good songs (sos and unfaithful), then gggb came with umbrella, disurbia, take a bow, dont stop the music, etc. large sales and made her a star with this album
then there was rated r, when she went dark and did a lot of different stuff to the left of the cute girl we knew her as
then came loud, gave her a lot of hit singles, solid selling album, a well put together era, better than rated r commercially. the loud tour was a success, making a lot of money.
talk that talk, to me, came and went with 2 decent to huge singles, where have u been and we found love, but not a lot of successful singles with only like 3 mv from this area.
ad then there is this area. i havent heard the album but it is her 1st #1 album, yet it also dropped out very fast from the top spot the following week.

so… most successful era of music is LOUD, deepest album is RATED R, best transformation from fun singer to super star status is GGGB

  • Rihanna is just a singles artists
NON of her albums are a hard worked form her as an artist ..
GGGB, RR & Loud are her mostly what I can call albums!
The rest have 2,3 single material and full of fillers
    #TRUTH #FACT #DEAL
That’s why Rihanna will NEVER inspire other artists to come ..
Coz she’s a manufactured one with NO identity . PERIOD
    #TRUTH #FACT #DEAL

None of her albums stand out as a collective body of work but shes got some banging singles. If I had to choose Id say between Loud and Rated R.

  • This is my Rihanna album ranking from highest to lowest…
    1. “Rated R”- I loved everything about this album. It’s her most cohesive album and I loved the darker tone of it. She had a rough year in 2009 and this album is reflective of that.
    2. “Unapologetic”- I didn’t like it at first but this album has grown on me quickly. It reminds me a bit of “Rated R” because of some of the lyrical content. I like pretty much every song except “What Now.”
    3. “Good Girl Gone Bad”- This is what really pushed Rihanna to the top and she has stayed there ever since. This album was fun and catchy.
    4. “LOUD”- This is my favorite album in terms of the singles she released. “What’s My Name?” never gets old to me. Aside from the singles though, nothing else really sticks out. As a collective body of work, I wasn’t too impressed.
    5. “Talk That Talk”- I feel Def Jam just released this album for the sake of releasing it. Nothing really impressive and more just microwave pop music. Blah. “Birthday Cake” is still my jam though.
    6. “A Girl Like Me”- I loved “SOS” and some of the other songs were decent but I haven’t really listened to this in years.
    7. “Music of the Sun”- Forgettable debut. Some of the songs were ok but nothing memorable. I feel like most people would consider “Good Girl Gone Bad” her “debut album” and forget about the first two.

  • With 7 albums under her belt and ‘Unapologetic’ being the first to reach #1, do you feel it is the most deserving of such honor?

If not, tell us below…which of her albums represent her best body of work to date?
    ___________________________________________________________

artistically : RATED R, This album deserved to be a #1 album more than Unapologetic , but commercially
Commercially : LOUD and GGGB and even TTT , but artistically ?

‘Unapologetic’ marks her FIRST attempt to find a balance between the 2 classes above … i guess , and it WORKED commercially , but artistically ….. it is showing time by time i see :D

I know that a lot of Rihanna’s fans have a difficult time with her when she is being introspective. Well, this is when she is the best.

    1. Rated R
    2. Unapologetic
    3. Talk That Talk (very underrated album–listen to it again please)

    Then, the rest.
