Hot Topic: Is Male R&B Making A Come Back?

Their female counterparts may be holding it down on an Urban front, but recent months have seen R&B’s leading lads succeed in pushing the genre to broader heights.

Sure, while the likes of Tyrese and Brian Mcknight never truly ‘went away’, the fraternity friendly lyrics of Frank Ocean, Miguel and The Weeknd has seen them win over audiences who perhaps don’t even consider themselves R&B fans, in ways their predecessors couldn’t.

Now, with sales from Kendrick Lamar, Drake and Ocean keeping the field afloat- and the forthcoming arrivals of Elijah Blake, Luke James and  B. Smyth fast approaching, we ask….

Is Male R&B Finally Making A Come Back?

…and if so, who stands as your favorite act?

So, who’s your favorite- and more importantly, why do you think the boys are selling more than the girls?

yes , it’s making a comeback in every black person’s chinese m** player in the form of free m** tracks.

IMHO , it will only make a comeback when WHITE artists sing R&B cuz let’s face it …….. you know the rest. #truthhurts

Im not sure on this, I mean there’s a lot of new male r&b talent emerging, so idk will see. And wonder why Tyresse never get’s recgoniction, he’s a talented dude, he can sing is b*** off, which also reminds me what happend to Mario, now he can sing also, but I guess they dont have that “it” appeal. Sigh, oh well.

    • krys March 31, 2013

  8. King B>Rihanna March 31, 2013

only here for Luke James, Daley, Usher, Maxwell, Jarell Perry and Miguel…everyone else can catch dust for all I Care.

    but in general, No!

Only Usher has the commercial appeal to bring R&B to the top of the charts.

but I think in general Male R&B is going to become like some underground type of scene where unless you appreciat good music, the general public is really not going to give a f***.

Sidenote: Some underground artist s*** on Popular artist.

I’ma say this and leave at it. Justin Timberlake is not r&b i don’t care how much y’all want it to be. His voice is not even R&B. And R&B has never left it just in sales that left. Only people that can still top the Charts with R&B is Beyonce, and Alicia Keys.

  10. Beyhive President March 31, 2013

Males that can top the charts if they really put there heart into it is Usher, R.Kelly, Chris Brown and Possible Trey Songz if they promote it will well…

(lookn at Sammie with alluring eyes but careful not to appear TOO ez…so i, while fresh out the shower and still in my towel, fall on my back and fl-LINGS my legs back to my head.)

  12. JARED (WHITE DUDE) March 31, 2013

Where are the 21st Century successors to “Luther Vandross, Teddy Pendergrass, Keith Sweat, Tevin Campbell, George Benson, Al Green, Donny Hathaway, Freddie Jackson, Lionel Richie” etc…???

    Besides ‘Luke James’… Who?

In that case, NO. Male R&B has yet to make a comeback.

  13. Mother Mariah March 31, 2013

Not even close. I like Elijah, Daley & Miguel…but unfortunately, no.

  14. Aishaaguilerakeystesfaye March 31, 2013

Drake and Kendrick aren’t RnB though. But my fave is The Weeknd, as u can tell by my user name, that is, among these RnB acts.

  15. Aishaaguilerakeystesfaye March 31, 2013

I don’t think the boys are selling as much as the girls, and if RnB is making a comeback, that is, male RnB, it’s under a form that blends other genres to RnB- The Weeknd is closer to rock.

  16. Tru Voice March 31, 2013

Not yet. But it can happen maybe in the next 5 years. Hopefully.

  17. TellDaTruth March 31, 2013

Y’all if JT album isn’t RNB.. What is? So he can’t sing RNB because he’s white, but yet Usher can sing the white pop music.. GTFOH

  18. the real xoxo March 31, 2013

Kendrick lamar is not an r&b artist.
then again, TGJ wouldnt know hip-hop if it shat in their dinner considering they stan for young money.

  19. Young Rih is worth OVER $ 151 milllion March 31, 2013

Black male RNB WILL NOT BE MAKING A COMEBACK. I have been reading all these PR and publicist books, not to mention marketing books over easter. The key component that stands out is YOUR CORE AUDIENCE and perception.

In the early 90’s Rkelly, jodeci. immature, Dru hill. Blackstreet, Keith swaet. jagged edge, joe etc all sold platinum in the USA alone because they understood their core.

Black men just cannot deal with the fact that BLACK WOMEN ( dark skin and afo hair ) ARE their core, they will never have a 90% white female fan base. Marketing 101: you have to penetrate your core, black men are bragging about latina, redbone, yellowbone mami and they DRIVE BLACK WOMEN AWAY – THEIR CORE.

Miguel: He flopped badly because he is guilty of this. His product is rnb and his core fanbase is BLACK AMERICAN WOMEN – outside the USA TOO. Yet, he goes on about his mexican dad over his black mama , has a mexican GF and latina woman are leads. Yo may, say, it is his life he can do what he wants….not when you trying to get PEOPLE TO SPEND MONEY. Rita Whora was with rob for over year, but she kept it quite to market herself as a single girl. How many white Leading men or pop stars come out as gay or date out their race? They cant! It will drive their core fanbase way. Black men JUST DONT GET IT.

Miguel would make more money and sell more, if he scraps RNB and does mexican music and target the latin market. Sadly latin’s will not accept him as he is black. In movies. too. Taye diggs killed his movie career when he married that white woman and went on TV dissin BLACK WOMEN – THE CORE WHO SUPPORTED how stella got her back. Now i have seen black women on other blogs calling on boycott of micheal ealy , hill harper and other black actors who use black women for their careers and date women other Black women, cos it will offend their fanbase. Why do u think films like Twilight all white love leads?

Then you have black men like Neyo saying mixed babies are the prettiest and Chris making ” you so black as midnight jokes ” and you wonder why the white boys stay winning?
