The Boondocks: The Banned Episode

Published: Wednesday 19th Mar 2008 by Sam

Like many of you, I follow popular TV show ‘The Boondocks’. Controversially, one the episodes of the show’s current season ‘The Huey Freeman Hunger Strike’ was banned, however it has recently hit the net. The episode takes aim at BET. Check it out below:

I like me some ‘Boondocks’ and can see where some of their points came from, but I’m not sure I wholly agree with what this episode conveys. I know, I’m not the only one with an opinion on this…

Your thoughts?

Well, of course, this is a little exaggerated, and over-the-top. Nontheless, the episode makes a lot of valid points.

I, as well as many other black folks, have long believed that BET is Crap TV. The channel does recycle other networks ignorant programming.

And the channel does not do a good job at showcasing black people in the best light.

The network is so powerful, but it’s current, and former, execs (Stephen Hill, Bob Johnson and Debra Lee) don’t care about anything but dollars and cents.

    Greedy Mofos!!!!

Haven’t faithfully watched the channel in years. Not with every movie being about a gangster, or someone either in jail or coming out of jail, or a drug dealer. They had a chance to do a documentary about some positive role models, instead, we get a show about famous black gangsters? Tv is like junk food, you are what you eat. As a result we have generations of people who strive for nothing more than to be a pimp, dealer, or a gangster. And young women are not exactly learning to have a lot of respect for themselves from what they are exposed to either.

Hits closer to the truth then I care to say. In College (I went to Spelman) I had the opportunity to talk to several BET head, and they all said (including the prez) that if you have a problem with programming dont watch. I took them at that and stopped watching minus rare occasions (BET awards, BET honors). The programming is improving, but something about it just feed the ignorance ie College Hill). So the question becomes is this show the caricature mocking reality, or does reality mock this show?

I’ve been agreeing with Aaron McGruder (creator of the Boondocks) about BET for some time now. I haven’t watched it in years. I just think it’s straight trash. Hopefully the UK version will be better than the smut they’ve turned into in the US.

It’s sad to see that the Cartoon Network thinks that a cartoon for adults is not viewed as comedy, but so much as reality that they banned to show it. If thats the case CN should only show toons for kids cause beleave it or not grown-ups can tell the difference between truth and fiction.
