The Grammy Awards – Celebrating Talent Or Playing Favourites?

The Grammy Award. This trophy serves as a symbol of honour and prestige; the most coveted decoration in the music industry. From new artists to seasoned veterans, all musicians aspire to win in their respective categories, not just because of the associated bragging rights, but also to put the final touches on a year of hard work. To win a Grammy is to know that you are the best.

Nevertheless, it seems that the glamour of the Grammy Award has begun to fade; its golden glint slowly beginning  to rust. In recent years, the voters have conformed to the trend of choosing the nominees and winners based on  their popularity and power, rather than merit. As an implication of this, many of the best records released during the last decade have been shamelessly overlooked and uncelebrated.

Indeed, this phenomenon is blatantly apparent in the list of nominees for the 2010 Grammy Awards ceremony. With Beyonce and Taylor Swift receiving the most nominations, many wonder if they only achieved such attention from the voters because of their pervasive presence in the mass media. In fact, Whitney Houston’s ‘I Look To You’ album was shockingly ignored by garnering not a single nomination, including in the R&B categories.

Hence, various acts continue to get shut out in favour of their more popular or politically supported counterparts. Many wonder if the Grammys are drifting closer to the stature of the MTV Awards, a ceremony that Kanye West indicated is influenced by an intricate web of unpublicised politics. However, with artists such as Maxwell and the Black Eyed Peas receiving nominations in the major categories, it seems that quality may still have a place in the judgments after all.

Do you think that the Grammy voters play

favourites?

I really think Beyonce and Taylor are going to be the Big Winners. But I hope Lady Gaga gets Best New Artist!

  2. WTF January 12, 2010

oh please trent, if you are going to lick ass just do…have some balls man…

you know the grammys is a joke…having maxwell and BEP in major catergories dnt mean s***…those are the tokens meant to disguise the clearly visible joke the grammys are…how does that i am sasha crap get 10 nods..yep that is right, both these ladies are merely being rewared for thier obedience…they are merely being rewarded for doing what they are told to do…

the grammys has lost its touch just like the whole music industry…its run by shameless elite who back certain singers and that is a fact…they force feed them to us and make sure they remain on top..this is no music award show anymore its about who is in and being rewarded for it…what a joke, i wont be watching this sham of a show!!!

  3. Barbie January 12, 2010

  6. sean January 12, 2010

Not giving Whitney any noms especially in the R&b categories was a travesty. Her album was one of the best albums of 2009 selling over 2mil copies worldwide and it was one of her most personal.

That right there, the grammys lost me so i say

Efff the Grammys! It’s a popularity test and politics filled.

  7. Barbie January 12, 2010

I AM… SASAH FIERCE is a great album glad to the Grammys see that! 10 Noms Album of the Year! Haters suck on that Don’t get mad cuz your fav. didn’t get that must or none lol.

  9. Vonnie January 12, 2010

I stopped watching the Grammy Awards when Ashanti won.

  10. stan January 12, 2010

without a doubt the grammies are about popularity. if they nominated fantastic albums by no-name singers, noone’s going to tune in and watch. ratings, people.. it’s a no-brainer.

of course once in a while they’ll throw in a bone and make the non-popular nominees win, but only so they won’t be blasted for always favoring the popular artists.

  11. WTF January 12, 2010

arguing with dumb fans is pointless..noone is hot and bothered dumb s***..i am just stating my fucken views..yes i wont be watching coz i dnt care for it…

having a huge single dnt mean the album was good..so what if it sold how many copies that dnt make it good ….i am sasha fierce is still s***!!! rubbish and it will remain that even if it wins!!!

  12. Flo January 12, 2010

FIRSTLY WOMEN NEVER EVER EVER GET MORE THAN 5 NIGHT LOOK @ LAURYN HILL, ALICIA KEYS, BEYONCE, DIXIE CHICKS, AMY WINEHOUSE, NORAH JONES EVEN ALLISON KRAUSS, REGARDLESS OF SOLO, GROUP OR PARTNERED WITH A A MALE, THEY ONNNNNNNLLLLLLYY GET 5 GRAMMYS IN ONE NIGHT!!!

AGAIN NOT A RULE JUST A HEAVILY USED AND OBVIOUSLY ENTENTED PATTERN CUZ AMY SHOULD HAVE WON ALBUM OF THE YEAR!!! NORAH JONES GOT ‘AOTY” BUT NOT “SOTY” CUZ SHE DIDN’T WROTE THE SONG!!

Beyonce and Taylor were crowd favorites but some of taylor’s material is good, beyonce for AOTY is ridiculous, but NeYo got nommed for it for that wack Year of the Gentlemen CD so anything is possible. You can see Gaga got minimal nods, nothin in pop like that which is crazy to me, the grammy’s have fallen off but i’ll be tuning in!!

  13. Dave January 12, 2010

I agree w/ what Trent is saying, but Black Eyed Peas? No Trent, I love them, but not this time around. When they we’re doing songs like “Where is the Love”, ok, but now, nada. Their album is still good thou. But, you’re about spot on, on this one.

  14. Barbie January 12, 2010

I AM… SASHA FIERCE 10 GRAMMY NOMS!!!! HAHAHA! GET IT BEY!!

I HOPE SHE WALKS HOME WITH ALOT HOPE SHE TAKES HOME 6-7 GRAMMYS GO BEY!

  15. Gilberto January 12, 2010

    I agree with hihihihi
lol@ THE BLACK EYED PEAS BEING QUALITY [2]
Their new songs have been turned to repetitive words and also it sounds like wannabe Daft Punk and Kraftwerk’s. There’s no soul and passion on E.N.D., their worst material so far.

  16. philly January 12, 2010

black eyed peas are quality? seriously?

  17. Mike January 12, 2010

“I Look To You” was NOT ao good album. I think you drank the hype juice as well. It was ordinary and terribly so.

But the grammys have made endless errors and shown great favouritism time and time again. Mariah is the biggest example. Shes only won 5 Grammys and 3 of those came 2 years ago.

When Hero lost best pop vocal to Sheryl crows “All I Wanna Do is have Some Fun” – I almost had a heartattack.

When Daydream lost every award including record and song of the year for One Sweet Day – I was admitted to teh hospital.

When We Belong Together lost recrod of the year – I knew the awards were selective about who they want to win big awards.

Mariah is the truest example of Grammy nonsense. there are others but thats just how it is. Where is Alanis Morissette and Lauryn Hill today? Where is Sheryl Crow? Are we gonna continue as Alicia wins every year just because shes Alicia?

Beyonce deserved her nominations though…maybe not all because her people are so smart about the way they put up songs for judging….but I still think she had the best album of the year. She’s never disappointed on the big stage and vocally, shes a class above all the youngins out there today. Incredible versatility

  18. Kongo January 12, 2010

Aint nobody hating but f****** god 10 nom for what one f****** song single ladies SIT DOWN that some b*******..! and whitney dont get nom =/ this industrey is DEAD !!! seems like the only people alive to these people is beyonce and taylor swift dot even get me started wit that one just because what kanye done to hear she has been winning sympathy award from every corner kmmt but yhhh what can we doo..

  19. sugar January 12, 2010

Bey will win ofcourse… she works extra. Haters fall back.

  20. sugar January 12, 2010

kanye will have to smell the DUST or go back to the jungle :+(

  21. Scoopz January 12, 2010

Trent, im not sure name dropping the Black Eyed Peas aided your point. Whilst talented without a doubt they are very commercial these days having latched on to the dance/euro pop vibe that everyone else has. Maybe Melanie Fiona would’ve been a better reference.

  22. T-M January 12, 2010

I think the Grammy’s are a joke. They use to be something rare to win even nominated for. But now you got one person nominated in every category just about. There are plenty of good artist out there. I’d rater win a VMA then a grammy. Like last year how they played Jazmine Sullivan picked a great album 5 nods but not one FREAKING win.

  23. 12345 January 12, 2010

@LOOOOOOOOOOL AT BLACK EYED PEAS BEING “TALENTED”, your head is full of s*** isnt it? their last album sucks so much, all songs sound the same, it is awful really

and obviously the grammys are total joke, ahah, only f****** and 12 year old kids will care about them because Beyonce and Taylor Swift are highly overrated, grammys are in a downfall they only nominate those who sold the most, they dont nominate talent

  24. Misty Knight January 12, 2010

Umm okay I can co-sign with the others and LOL @ you using the Black Eyed Peas as an indication of “good music”.
But I think when people ‘d faves don’t get grammy nods, thats when they tend to question the integrity of the Grammy’s .

I doubt that if Nippey’s LP wouldve gotten some nods, this would even be a discussion.

Further more the Grammy’s acknowledge ALOT MORE categories than whats shown on TV. And there are alot more genres to pay attention to besides POP!

  25. RANDOM January 12, 2010

whitney passed over ???? why is that shocking i thought they would they didn’t eh

  26. MushyLove_1992 January 12, 2010

The grammys have become more of a poularity contest. Its all about whos hot at the time, not about whos actually talented. I was watching it one year, and all I could do was put my face in my hands. I would be looking at the categories and looking at the person that won the award, and I look in disbelief at the Tv like WTF?! Did you see those other artist in that category? Are you serious? But hey, we have non-talented singers in the industry “accomplishing” things. People support the no talent, sorry excuse for singers, so what do you expect?

But I do want to take an oppurtunity to congratulate Bey on her 10 grammy nods. Shes going to clean house.(Not all the grammy nods, but it would be nice to see..)

  27. d January 12, 2010

lol you and your long ass blogs. i don’t hav e the time.

  28. dillpickle January 12, 2010

womp…womp…and you’re just figuring this out, YES, the Grammy’s aren’t what they use to be…it seems like the less talented you are , the better chance you’re going to get a Grammy these days

  29. sugar January 12, 2010

    Go Bey go

  30. Yours Truely January 12, 2010

Grammys? Huh? What Grammys? I thought it was a popularity contest, didnt know a/the Grammys still extisted *shrug*

  31. GetitIn January 12, 2010

big ol COSIGN at everyone LOLing at the black eyed peas being quality!!

reason enough to kick this damn fool off TGJ so it can go back to being a good blog.

  32. Steffon January 12, 2010

Of course its a popularity contest. Brandys “HUMAN” should have been nominated for something. But clearly the big winners will be Beyonce and Taylor

    Taylor will win 5
    Beyonce will win 3

  33. Bobby D January 12, 2010

MIKE is absolutely right….Mariah is the biggest example of how the Grammy is just plain b*******.

How can the biggest selling female artist ever consistently not recieve grammy awards or even nominations???? You kidding me????

the grammys are a JOKE. They have no creditability and i think we should boycott watchin em.

    F*** A GRAMMY

  34. Stoney-Brie January 12, 2010

Music died on June 25th 2009!

    end of!

  35. kayla January 12, 2010

I agree grammys are a popularity contest just like music biz and it sad because you have artist who have been working so hard and get no recognition for it at all. I do belive beyonce deserves a nomination but her album wasnt rnb it wasnt real rnb at least not all of it. Brandy has been nominated for a grammy for each cd except Human which was out 2008 it was ignored simply because your talent doesnt determine your success anymore and it not just her its many artist who are dealing with the same thing.

  36. Anne January 12, 2010

I wish folks would stop forgetting about the Cadillac Records soundtrack. Two of Beyonce’s nominations are for two great songs from that album (her rendition of “At Last” and the original song “Once In A Lifetime”). And “Halo” was one of he best pop/r&b vocal recordings of the year and deserves nominations. Beyonce works hard. Maybe others would have more nominations if they released two great albums during the qualification period. She deserves it more than the other popular counterparts (BEP and no-singing Taylor Swift or okay singing Gaga). Lots of people appreciated and enjoyed Beyonce’s music, that’s part of why she is so POPULAR. You can’t deny that all kinds of people were dancing to “Single Ladies.” As for WHITNEY, how can I feel sorry for her when she HAD HER DAY and the voice is gone now anyway.

  37. B. Mike January 12, 2010

Mariah is a perfect example of why the Grammy’s are crap. There is no way that voice should only have 5. NO F****** WAY.

  38. kayla January 12, 2010

Also how the hell do artist like Taylor Swift beat out Whitney Houston to get a nomination that is the true crime! Brandy been nominated 12 times and won one grammy excuse my french but thats b*******. Im not just saying this because of her its any hardworking artist period she is just an example but I do love her though lol

  39. jeffrey January 12, 2010

The Grammys Became Crap Long Ago.
When People Like Beyonce , Alanis Morisette and Alicia Keys have More Grammys than Janet, Mariah, Whitney and Madonna then they are crap.

Micheal Jackson the King of Pop earned 13 Grammys In his Lifetime and In 1988 he was Snubbed And got Nothing! And Bad was the Best Selling album of 1987 and the singles all went to Number one and he got Nothing.

The Grammys only Award The Popular Artist but real talent and real music gets ignored or only gets recognize In the Minor categories.

  40. YouPutTheLimeInTheCoconut January 12, 2010

    Playing favorites.

    Next…

  41. TOM January 12, 2010

BEP quality music??? oh trent…..with that you just pissed allover your argument.

and maybe you live under a rock, but beyonce didn’t get 10 noms because she’s always in the media (damn you make it sound like she’s in the media the way lindsay lohan or paris hilton is) …she got those noms because she had an impressive era, getting her album to multiplatinum status pretty much everywhere…..having 4-5 mega hits topping the charts, settin records and creating pop culture movements.

your attempt at throwing shade is pathetic.

your addition to this site has done TGJ more damage than good…i don’t even know why sam gave the job to such a biased person like you. a mariah stan…. the worse kind as well.. SMH

  42. Rihanna Flop January 12, 2010

    i can’t believe bey only has 11NOMINATIONS
it should have been more LOL

    now that’s a BAD B****

  43. B@tch Please January 12, 2010

I think that Beyonce is only gonna win the R&B categories.

  44. Pinkpop January 12, 2010

Beyonce deserves all of the nominations… and please, Maxwell okay, but where do BEP got more quality than any of the “blamed” artitsts???

  45. Anne January 12, 2010

Kayla, I haven’t heard or can’t remember any songs from Brandy’s album. How can people vote for it if they never hear it. Sounds like a promotion problem to me. I listened to Whitney’s whole album and I was not that impressed. I prefer her older albums and I listened to them quite often. The newer album doesn’t have the same Whitney vocal quality although the songs are nice. None of her new songs can compare to “Saving All My Love For You” , “You Give Good Love” , “Your Love Is My Love”, “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” and the list goes on. Although Whitney can’t compete with Whitney she is competitive among her R&B counterparts and should have at least been nominated but like I said she had her day and can’t really sing live anymore. I’m happy for the newer ladies on the R&B block, like Ledisi, India Arie, Jazmine Sullivan, Melanie and Beyonce for their nominations. I’m also happy for Maxwell. GO BEY & MAXWELL!

  46. Yan January 12, 2010

It’s a shame that “In A Perfect World” wasn’t nominated for “Best Contemporary R&B album”
And what about Michelle’s “Unexpected” or Ciara’s “Fantasy Ride” ?
    Grammy is a sell-out.

  47. Hadli-Man-E January 12, 2010

Do you really think the last BEP album is quality?? :O

I understand someone like Beyoncé earned that lot of noms, maybe you prefer some other artists, but you have to admit this year was Beyoncé/Taylor/GaGa year.

Would it be better if Whitney was nominated? I like her but… her last album is far not so good!!
It’s crazy how some of you are talking like every past time was better, I don’t say they are not good, but there’s no reason to put Madonna or Janet in a higher level than Beyoncé or Alicia…

  48. kj January 12, 2010

I’m sure beyonce n taylor will win big!!! @ taylor, sweet girl…but she annoys me now.
but those b****** beta give gagaloo @least 1 grammy n not snub her like da ama’s.
poker face===for record of da yr ( this is my dream, realistically I won’t be suprised if gaga leaves empty handed).

  49. Nick January 12, 2010

The average grammy voter is about 50 years old- and is kind of like the equivalent of a rolling stone music review. The name above the release garners much more prominence than the actual quality of the album. Case in point- Herbie Hancock winning for a Joni Mitchell covers album that didn’t even make a dent into mainstream consciousness until he won. Or, take Alison Krauss and Robert Plant’s album that won last year, or Steely Dan’s album that won in the early 2000’s. The grammy awards are completely irrelevant- if they really wanted to reward the best music of the year- the albums that really pushed things forward and made a lasting impact on the scene- Grizzly Bear and Animal Collective would be nominated in major categories. At least they nominated M.I.A. and Radiohead last year…

As for Whitney- they were obviously playing label politics. The RIAA and Whitney Houston don’t exactly have the most civil history ever. Shame that you didn’t point that out when the reason is so obvious. And to put Maxwell and Black Eyed Peas in the same example as “quality”? Yeah… let’s take a look at the difference in their respective metacritic scores…

  50. Kikyo Fierce January 12, 2010

    @Vonnie

Shut the f*** up u dumb f*****. . watch yo f***** tongue. .Ashanti deserves more than Grammys than Beyonce & she will get there soon watch this album will be HUGE for her . . . .it will shut those f****** haters right up!

  51. J-Wellz January 12, 2010

@MUSHYLOVE_1992 I AGREE ITS ALL ABOUT WHO’S HOT RIGHT NOW.BUT I`M HAPPY FOR BEYONCE`.”SINGLE LADIES” WAS A HIT.AND I THINK ITS ONE OF THOSE SONGS DAT WILL STILL GET PLAYED ON A REGULAR DAY BASES 5 YEARS FROM NOW.AND I HOPE LADY GAGA WIN AN AWARD TO DIS HAS BEEN AN AMZING YEAR FOR HER.AND TAYLOR SWIFT…..(THANK KANYE FOR MAKING U FAMOUS WIN U WIN UR AWARD) LOL.IM JUST PLAYIN AROUND,BUT CONGRADS TO HER ALSO HER ALBUM IS ALRIGHT EVEN THO I GET TIRED OF MA LIL SIS PLAYIN IT.BUT I HOPE CIARA WINS BEST POP COLLABORATION.SHE DESERVES IT,AFTER ALL “FANTASY RIDE” HAS BEEN THROUGH & THAT’S THE ONLY SONG IN THAT CATEGORY TO HIT TOP 10 WORLDWIDE SO I THINK SHE HAS A CHANCE OF WINNING THE AWARD.AND HER NOT GETTIN NOMINATED THROUGH HER “EVOLUTION (2006-2007)” ERA WHICH IM STILL KINDA MAD ABOUT.

  52. keeping it real January 12, 2010

Good job and well deserve to the hardest worker in the music industry. There’s no doubt that Mrs. Beyonce Knowles-Carter should and will come home with no less than 6 awards. Well deserve. Taylor will get at least 1 pity award. Enough of her already. Lady GaGa at least 2 awards. Good job. Bird nose will maybe get new best artist but I think it should go to Melanie Fiona she can sing.

  53. tweetypiebabe1 January 12, 2010

I was actually surprised to see that Maxwell got so much nominations! I do think that the Grammy’s has become all about what’s hot right now. Ever since they shut out India.Arie of at least one well deserving award the year she was nominated I haven’t looked at it the same though I must say the best year so far for me was the year Amy Winehouse won most of the awards and Herbie Hancock took home the big prize showing us then that maybe it isn’t all about what’s hot but about the talent.
Anyway with the state of music now what is there to do?!

  54. Carol January 12, 2010

    Cosign with Stoney Brie!!!

  55. Ben January 12, 2010

Wow, a topic that I have been waiting for quite a while. I have so many opinions on music award shows, but I will try to condense this one. Once again, you are spot on with this article, I think that the Grammys are quickly starting to lose credibility. Of course they pick favorites. It is funny, because if there were ever a time for Beyonce to win 10 nominations, I would have to say that it should have been for her 1st solo record, and not this one. While “I AM SASHA FIERCE” is not a bad album, it is far from album of the year quality. As someone who has bought all 3 of her cds, this one falls at the bottom. Her Barbara Streisand attempt bombed and turned into nothing but a gimmick, instead the most recognition that she recieved for this album was her urban act “Single Ladies.” Lets be honest, ALBUM OF THE YEAR? Who splits up an 11 song set into 2 cds, with one side favored over the other, and calls that one of the best of the year. But this article isn’t just about her, see how opiniated I am? There were countless artists that deserved nominations this year such as Elliot Yamin(a Caucasian R&B artist who was an AI runner up), C. Michelle, Keyshia Cole, Whitney Houston, and others. And their deadline for submissions is really a load of crap. How can you have categories like SONG, RECORD, AND ALBUM OF THE YEAR categories when you have a deadline of Oct.2008-Aug.2009, and the award show is in 2010? That doesn’t make it fair to other artists who drop an album a week after the deadline that ends up being 3x better than the nominees that they already have. The Oscars consider everything in the previous year up to stuff that is still in theaters, the Grammys could have something similar. I know they have over 100 categories, but they have about over 200 people on the board, so no excuse! But in all, I’ve said this before, there are no true award shows anymore. Just an overhyped red carpet and a big concert, which is really the main reason why I watch. But I still think the Grammys have some decency, at least 3x more than the MTV Awards, BET Awards, and AMAs, cause at least you get some indie talent recognized. Don’t even try it with the other 3, cause you will see the usuals nominated every year.

  56. number1k9 January 12, 2010

Most of y’all are hating on the Peas. They are a very unique and individualistic musical group. They do deserve every nomination and win they get! They never came out and claimed to be a lyrically deep group. The cross boundaries, they can make a meaningful song like “Where Is The Love?” and then a club joint like “My Humps.”

Just because you don’t think their lyrics is very musical, that doesn’t take away from the song or album as a whole. Go Peas, I hope they win all of their awards, especially the major categories!

To the first poster don’t know if someone already said, but Gaga isn’t up for Best New…She isn’t eligible. I’ll be kinda pissed if Keri Hilson wins Best new….

When it comes to Beyonce and Taylor Swift, I agree, they did recieve a TON of nomination, especially Bey. This wasn’t even her best period musically IMO. Taylor had a tremendous year, and is a great musician (not vocalist), she writes her own lyrics, and plays the guitar. So I mean, she is just one hella luck little town girl, to be receiving all of her success lately, but I’m happy for a young person to be doing so well. Props to her over Beyonce-now that, those 10 nom.’s are a perfect case of favoritism.

    @number1k9

  57. Kiki January 12, 2010

The grammys are a joke. I don’t watch anymore. I stopped watching when Mya didn’t get the best video for the song Whoa. It is a popularity contest. Most of the the music today sucks!

  58. NUNYA January 13, 2010

Im not reading all of those comments, but i did look through some. Anyway why is it when a person dont like a certain person music or agree with certain things, they’re called a HATER.
Some people really dont know the definition of the word HATE. please look it up before she/he make a ignorant comment.
The grammys been fell off, I stopped watching because its not about talent no more, its about popularity. How in the heck did pleasure p get nominated for few grammys? I want to know that first off. Anyway since some people are media hype and dont sell a lot of records, theres your problem. I do agree with taylor getting nominated because she had a amazing year. shes selling records. By the looks of things, susan boyle will have sold more that beyonce cd,LOL

  59. Dawon January 13, 2010

LOL @ people saying the Grammy’s are a joke because their favorite artist didn’t get nominated LOL or know they their artist won’t win…SORE LOSERS!!! LOL

    GO BEYONCE!!!

  60. Bobby D January 13, 2010

    @Dawon

….are you f****** kidding me??? Wake up kid. Do your research.

    Check Neilsen Soundscan.
    Check Billboard charts.
Check radio spins and airplay statistics
    Check Album sales.

THEN come back here talkin your dumbness. Major artists are being snubbed year after year after year by the Grammys. There is no way to not realize it. Also, please take into account each time an artist gets nominated for say, oh i dunno, 11 grammy awards and the artists consistently putting out great songs getting great airplay (such as Nickleback, Mariah Carey, etc) fail to even recieve a nomination.

And this is nothing new. Grammy snubs have been taking place since the Grammy’s existed. Perfect example …in 1966 THE BEATLES (yes, the beatles, more number one songs than ANYONE) lost the best rock and roll category to a band called Winchester Cathedral…..yeah exactly. I never heard of em either.

Regardless DAWON do your research before posting stupid ass comments. In fact I will even help get you started. Read the article below, dumbass.

  63. Princess Ciara February 1, 2010

It is a shame that Princess Ciara’s Love,S**,Magic didn’t take home all the grammys. Her album got very little air play. I don’t know who is responsible for that, but she should fire them immediately.

She has more class, style, intelligence, beauty, grace, work ethic and talent than Beyonce, Keri and all the rest have. She was robbed this year, just like Mya was robbed in “dancing with the stars.”

Maxwell is way overrated. If I hear that pretty wings of love one more time, I’m going to break my radio.
