Dawn Richard seems to have one mode and it’s “hustle”

The former Danity Kane nucleus brushes off the debris from the group’s explosive break-up and instead flaunts her flare for edgy in the daring video for new single ‘Calypso.’

Lifted from Richard’s latest album ‘Blackheart,’ the visual awaits below…

While the song doesn’t rouse us like it seems to Dawn, we’ll continue to commend her for her drive. We just hope it’ll steer her towards more commercially palatable music.

      Who?

  2. reallytho-_- April 29, 2015

I get it. FKA meets Grimes with a tad of Sega Genesis.. I’m sure she had fun making the video though

I just can’t get into it, its just noisy with no substance, and to add insult to injury the visuals… they are CONSISTENTLY all over the place.

IDC what anyone says, this video is so epic. I haven’t seen anything so creative since i was a little girl watching Missy get half of face stung by a bunch of bees.

Dawn got a European soul with many sounds she comes out with solo wise.

Would be great for her to work with a Sia type.
Dawns unique edge just lacks a certain execution but the talent is soooo there.
Just some fine tuning her direction

Agreed! She’s really really great She just needs a Sia kind of song writer to make or help her make that one out of the box but commercial song that makes her blow up. And then her creativity can go the rest of the way.

Azealia Banks, she needs a collaboration w/ Azealia banks dammit! Their lack of caring about mainstream success would mesh so well.

I hope she does not make more “commercial” music. We have enough sellouts

    • Jovan April 29, 2015

Thank you, preach. Everything sounds the effin same- and God knows I’m sick of the radio. I’ve been listening to Azealia banks on repeat for the past year or so.

She’s so talented. Everything she releases I fall in love with.

This chick is so next level. She’s like hood bjork and I’m definitely here for this era (though I do wish she had done a vid for Billie Jean)

I like the video, not the song so much, but the video is on point, doing all this indie is dope. Dawn deserves her props.

Dawn was doing this before we knew who FKA Twig was though and most of us did not know who FKA Twigs was until she began juggling Rob Pattinson ballz last year. There is a time stamp on everything and if y’all want to go at it, bring the receipts or stfu.

    • AnnaliseKeatingsNewWig April 29, 2015

Tbqh they all copied it from Lisa Bonét and Zöe Kravitz if we really want to pull out receipts.

No tea no shade but I love Dawn for her work ethic, she is a great talent. But her music videos are find bizarre. Either they have a odd theme that I seem to miss or just no story line and bizarre objects an looks. I think it’s trying to being overly artsy and doesn’t work well. She would have been a bigger hit if she used an image like Ciara. The songs are good the videos just need some structure or sense they confuse the poop out of me.

A more commercial sound is what she said she is going to do on her next album.

  14. Carla April 29, 2015

The music industry is disheartening . Staying true to yourself does not pay off, and you won’t get the support from a label and from fans, signing to a label 360 mess you going to get some promotion, sell 50,000 album copies in the current musical climate and still end up broke. lmao.

I say get a label, get the exposure then go back indie and make some money.

Nice video and the song not so much
