What all of the above have in common? They all occurred between the time that is now and the release of Rihanna‘s last studio album ‘Unapologetic.’
Indeed, a lot has happened since the Westbury CEO released the Urban Contemporary effort in the November of 2012 and watched it become her first #1 offering on the Billboard 200.
Since then, anticipation for its follow-up has risen and fallen as fans found themselves teased with unconfirmed release dates, three buzz singles and the big budget videos that accompanied two of them.
For any other artist the album’s delay would spell trouble. For Rihanna? It won’t.

Following in the footsteps of her former Def Jam sibling Mariah Carey, Rihanna adopted a one album per annum strategy that her supporters (dubbed the Navy) knew would bring them new music every November.
Alas, her release story took a surprising twist when November 2013 came around but failed to deliver a new album and would be shaken by the gargantuan release that was Beyonce‘s self-titled surprise that dominated the fourth quarter when it hit retailers on December 13th.
Almost two years have passed since then and the world remains without a new Fenty album to call its very own.
Fortunately, the star’s delay isn’t her denial…at least that’s how we see it.
After semi-accurate critics lambasted her for churning out microwave-Pop hits it’s clear that the performer is hard at work on a classic album that won’t be born out of her earlier need to top the Billboard Hot 100 but of experiences she’ll piece together to create a cohesive and layered body of work.
For, one needn’t look any further than 2010’s ‘Rated R’ to see just how brilliant Riri LPs can be when she’s given the time to tell her story in the way it needs to be told.
Her only mistake this time around? Assuming “classic” and Adult Contemporary are one and the same and releasing the poorly received ‘FourFiveSeconds‘ as this project’s first supporting single.
Personally, we’d love to hear the ‘Music of the Sun‘ chanteuse nab critical brownie points by letting her vocals, story telling and melodious toplines take the lead over production that speaks to her eclectic taste.
For, though the comparison may be blasphemous to some, Fenty does have it within herself to be the next Madonna once she finds a way to use her experiences to create her very own ‘Bedtime Stories’ or ‘Erotica.’
What she’ll need to achieve this task?
Time…and with as many hits as she has to her name time to create her best body of work is one thing we’d say she’s definitely earned.
Rated R slayed my soul. If R8 is half as good as that stellar piece of work I’ll be very happy.
Because that was one of TWO albums that actually had direction and a real concept (other being GGGB). She’s just all over the place musically and just wants chart topping singles then the album is a mess collectively. I’m not mad at the break, weren’t the haters begging to God for her to take one? After Loud (a much needed fun pop album because some felt that Rated R (her Velvet Rope) was too dark. TTT brought the shirt talking Rih Rih to the mix and Unapologetic brought out her softer side and some of her best vocal performances of her career. But because the albums were back to back to back to back, the new album would cut the pervious album short, mainly Loud. Cheers was on the top 10, I want to say top 5 and out of nowhere We Found Love dropped. I guess it doesn’t matter cause she sold another 4 million WW, but TTT singles could had been singles for a rerelease of Loud. Her eras would be cut by a good 4 to 6 month because she went on tours and was recording the next album.

I will say her last two albums weren’t great body of works. Great hits, great songs, hut they didn’t mix well as an album, like Loud, Rated R, GGGB and even AGLM and MotS (Both good albums as well). At the end, the fans are excited, the haters are mad and Rihanna is making moves in her career. She might as well name it R8 and should be working on bringing the vocals and great shows. I really want her to find herself on the stage. I don’t want her to be a Ciara or Beyonce, I want her to find a balance of great vocals and a lil dance move here and there.
