After a decade of a very public battle with a heart condition, Queen Latifah‘s mother – Rita Owens – has passed away.
The multi-talented actress/rapper took to press recently to offer a statement on the matter. See it inside:
“It is with a heavy heart that I share the news my mother, Rita Owens passed away today,” says Latifah. “Anyone that has ever met her knows what a bright light she was on this earth. She was gentle, but strong, sweet, but sassy, worldy but pragmatic, a woman of great faith and certainly the love of my life.”
“She had struggled with a heart condition for many years and her battle is now over,” Latifah shares. “I am heartbroken but know she is at peace. Thank you for your kindness, support and respect for our privacy at this time. Much Love, Dana Owens (aka Queen Latifah), forever Rita Owens’ daughter.”

That picture of the two of them is everything! It explains it all…Queen Latifah has been a mainstay in entertainment and an inspiration for not only African-Americans, but for so many different races and faces…CLEARLY the mother of the Queen is a Queen herself! And clearly she did an excellent job raising her! Those good looks, charisma, class and charm all came from MOTHER! Sad to hear about this…prayers to the Owens family and friends ??
