The Scarborough Open Air Theatre welcomed Leona Lewis recently, serving as the venue for her latest UK stage in aid of her latest album ‘Glassheart‘.
While there, she showcased the gem that is her voice with a moving cover of the Sia penned love song ‘Diamonds’, recorded by by the vocalist singer chart topper Rihanna for her first #1 album ‘Unapologetic’.

Nothing’s better than when a great song is given to a good vocalist, with the range to truly ‘give life‘ to the cut.
With this in mind, we’re hoping Leona takes as much time as possible to work on ‘Heart‘s follow up to create an album that’s both classic but contemporary, and sees her take her rightful place as the UK’s Queen of Adult Contemporary.
We were going to say we hope Rihanna catches wind of this performance and takes note.
However, that would a be a waste of every one’s time, considering all the notes in the couldn’t save her voice from the whirlpool of flat notes it oft finds itself spinning in.

I love Leona Lewis, Glassheart is a masterpiece and highly underrated album.
Having said that, this performance once again confirms what I have always thought and that is no one can sing a Rihanna song better than Rihanna.
Rihanna may not be the best vocalist out there but just like Only Girl in the world, Stay and Diamonds, this song is missing the Rihanna magic dust that makes it enjoyable, despite Leona having superior vocal ability.
Hearing this confirms that Rihanna and only Rihanna would have made this a hit, and she did.
I was going to write the same thing. Although Leona might be seen as a better singer than Rihanna she is again missing the emotion in the voice that Rihanna gives the song and what most of Leona’s songs are missing.
I have to be honest, im not a Rihanna song but i love Rihanna singing this and found this version empty.
Also, am i the only one who didn’t get the Glass Heart memo? I spent money and was disappointed and found it her worst album
She was trying to take a risk with Glassheart by incorporating BIG production with soulful ballads, it was a good calculated risk seeing the stage music was at at the time of release.
I guess it didn’t pan out as planned but it’s still an amazing album IMO.
The only emotion in Rihanna’s songs are her raspy vocals as she can’t hit them notes.

Singing – It might be subjective, but for me it is definitely Madonna. Janet lip syncs all time and even her studio vocals sound pretty poor, more like whispering than singing. Madonna’s Oscar performance alone >>>, plus her Grammy for Best Pop VOCAL Album are pretty enough for me.
Dancing – Janet Jackson ofc, she’s fire on stage and probably the best female dancer of all time.

Why do I feel like most people that stan for Rihanna pay dust to Don’t Stop The Music? I think it’s the most underrated song by her. I No one mentions it as her classic or memorable song but tbh I feel that DSTP was one of the songs that popularized dance music (Confessions on a Dancefloor, its impact >>), it was a huge hit in clubs especially in Europe. I couldn’t escape it in 2007-2008 and it still sung and used here in Serbia even in competiton for FOLK music.

Rih’s got that special pop quality. She breathes life into her songs. Leona sadly sucks them out of them at times like she did with this cover. It’s Rihanna’s flaws that make her vocal so believable and unique. I’d rather hear her deep, hiccupy and throaty vocals cause they sound like they come from the gut and the heart!
Not bad! But definitely not good either. This just shows again Leona has not a versatile voice, way below true greats level (Mariah, Whitney, Celine, etc). Those people can sing anything, even if they have to completely change it or whatever, they won´t dissapoint, cos they have the musicianship (and the voice of course).
That said of course Leona Lewis´ voice is 20 times better than Rihanna´s. We are used to listening to Rihanna singing this song so it´s normal that any other singer sounds weird while singing it at first. But I remember when the song first debuted how I was thinking Rihanna didn´t make the song interesting, maybe the first verse, but then the song kept the same, didn´t grow further, she was struggling to sound interesting in the song to me. After the crazy radio support she always gets, of course I ended liking the song from start to finish. But that´s it. Rihanna, her voice and her songs are not a killer, deal with her basic artistry once and for all. Can you guys imagine Rihanna covering Leona´s songs? Hmm just NO.
