However, as the statistics that accompany her 7 studio albums in as many years reveals, the goat buck stops there. For, five months ago we shared news that the ‘Disturbia’ diva had hit the 9.8 million albums sold mark. Now, via refreshed reports, it appears she has barely passed the 10 million mark…of collective albums sold.
Is this bad news or just a sign of the times? Weigh in below:

What do these statistics say? With U.S. album sales on a steady decline for the last decade, the likelihood of mega-selling albums is not nearly what it was even ten years ago. But, even with the present sales climate of the industry, the likes of many of her top and more talented contemporaries besting her collective sales with their first two efforts, the argument of “more is better” becomes defunct.
Then, the argument of placement vs. sales arises as well. In an era where Internet streams and 99 cent purchases assist #1 reigns, artists like Michael Jackson, Madonna, Janet, and Whitney took their timeless hits on the shoulders of radio airplay and dynamic single sales. To take away from Rihanna’s achievement would be remiss as her branding power has made her – dare we say it – the #1 chick in the game (all by merit of smoke, mirrors, and marketing).

Congratulations Rihanna! This is quite an accomplishment. What a lot of you fail to realize is that Rihanna is CONSISTENT, which is something not a lot of the so-called pop stars today can claim. All but one of Rihanna’s albums are platinum (or multi-platinum) certified, and she is still at the top of her game. So while 10 million albums sold domestically may not sound like a lot, Rihanna has proven she has staying power and remains a force to be reckoned with in the industry. This, more than anything, is why she deserves to be praised. Her consistency is something no one can argue with.
Of course she will be somewhat ‘consistent’ she stays in our faces with maximum exposure year upon year.

Adele’s 21 is certified Diamond in the U.S alone though. That is just her second album.
I am a huge Adele fan, but I’ll wait to see how her next album performs. There are so many tales of artists who EXPLODED onto the scene with a massive album (Alanis Morisette, Norah Jones) and then sort of faded out of memory. Time will only tell with Adele, but it’s entirely possible that 21 is an anomaly that she can’t even come close to replicating (which would be sad.) Hi lambs, after everything I’ve been through this year, I doubt there’s anyone more excited for the holidays to begin than I am. I usually try my hardest to wait until after Thanksgiving to celebrate the holiday season but this just made my day and I gotta share.
Today on the street, a group of fans stopped me and started singing “All I Want For Christmas Is You” at the top of their lungs. Amazing. So many people tell me: “The holiday season doesn’t start for us until we hear All I Want For Christmas Is You by Mariah.” Surreal. I humbly thank them but inside I’m jumping up and down like a second grader on a snow day because I WROTE AND PRODUCED that song on a whim!!! To hear this and to see “All I Want For Christmas Is You” at #1 on this week’s Billboard’s chart… I kinda still can’t believe it!
I’ll never forget writing the melody and lyrics in a little studio decorated for Christmas in the middle of the summer. In case you know nothing about me, when I was a little girl, Christmas and music were the happiest moments I had and I never realized that people would grow up listening to and singing along with my songs like I grew up listening to “Jingle Bells” or “Santa Claus Is Comin’ To Town”
Then, when I saw “Where Are You Christmas?” by Faith Hill at #2, I almost couldn’t believe it because I wrote that song with the incredible Oscar-winning genius James Horner for the movie “The Grinch” a couple of years back. It blows my mind and makes me feel like that second grader on a snow day again!!
After I hugged the group of fans goodbye, they ran down the street, waving and continuing their rendition of “All I Want For Christmas Is You”, a song I wrote very tongue-in-cheek, very cookies-and-milk, purely childhood-memories-forever!
I just want to thank everyone for consistently supporting my Christmas music year after year because it is so much more than holiday music for me. It’s about joy, nostalgia, and it’s about never losing the spirit of Christmas in your heart. Happy (very early) holidays! –MC

I don’t think that its an accomplishment. Taylor Swift who came a year after Rihanna has outsold her with about half the number of albums Rihanna has put out. Yes albums haven’t been selling like it use to but considering how artist like Eminem, Taylor, Pink and Justin Timberlake have had multi-platinum albums since Rihanna started the music biz. Even Bruno Mars both albums that were release near the same time as Loud & Unapologetic have out sold her.
