LeToya Luckett has quite the hustle factor.
The singer-actress has spent much the last year jugging both passions; appearing on recently revived dramedy ‘Single Ladies’ and piecing together her third studio album ‘Until…Then’.
33-year-old Luckett celebrates her journey in the latest issue of Rolling Out magazine, who she also spoke to about some of the struggles she faced while on the rise. The Houston-bred beauty also dished on her time in Destiny’s Child and the “second lead vocalist” comment that went viral recently.
Peep her stunning cover above and quotes below…
On Her Time In Destiny’s Child:
“A lot of people ask me about my past. It’s part of my life so I expect people to ask certain questions. Maybe they’re curious. At the end of the day, I don’t let it get me down. It was a wonderful time in my life and I’m blessed that I was able to be a part of one of the biggest girl groups known to man. I don’t take those moments for granted and I expect it. I know people are going to have those questions.”
On “That” Second Lead Vocalist Comment:
“That video was so funny! I laughed! When did that even happen — and look at my face! I was just giving shade! But I think we were all tired. But people thought it was one thing and it really wasn’t. What Kelly was saying was true. Everybody knew their position. That’s why the group worked.”
On Her Past Insecurities:
“I had things about myself that I [didn’t] like. I [would always say] ‘I wish I had this, I wish I had that.’ I used to have this thing about my legs. If you look at all of the Destiny’s Child albums from when I was a part of the group, you never saw me in a skirt. I was always the one who wore the pants, because I felt like my legs were too skinny.
You want your boobs to grow; you want all kind of things to happen. Eventually things fill out — and sometimes they fill out too much!
The glare of the spotlight only amplifies insecurities. People like to pick at your imperfections and that can be very hard on you as a person. I think a lot of times people forget that we’re human beings and some of us are fighting self-esteem issues already. I love Instagram and Twitter and I think it’s awesome that fans can connect with their favorite artists, but it also gives them a chance in that comment box to say what they really feel about them. Be confident in who you are and who God made you to be. I can’t pay attention to it. I’d go crazy out here.”
On Her Foray Into Acting:
“I was kind of thrown into this [acting] thing. My first audition was [the 2010 Christian drama] Preacher’s Kid. Four days before the shoot date, they called and asked me if I wanted to play the lead role. I had not done a movie before — [so] to carry a movie on my back on my own with no training, no nothing? I hadn’t been to school for this! But God had a plan for me. An acting coach, Troy Rowland, guided me through that whole thing. Since then I have been bitten by the bug and I am head-over-heels in love with it. I’m passionate about it. I study; I go to classes. I just want to get better and better and I think with each experience — movie, TV show or whatever — I grow. But it’s harder than it looks. I have a whole new appreciation for my favorite actors now. It’s a wonderful thing to be able to do. And I’m blessed to even have the opportunity to grow in it.”
More power to Ms. Luckett. Here’s hoping her album arrives sooner rather than later.
So everybody in the group but Beyonce knew their role. Because wasn’t it Bey who gave the cough and obvious shade to Kelly for saying the “2nd lead comment,” ????
Kelly Rowland is a flop
Hi, I’m “You’re Mine”. Have we met? Let me introduce you to my sister, “You’re Mine Remix”.
“Everybody knew their position and that’s why the group worked.” – Maybe she had a memory lapse.
This “knowledge of position” has left the other girls with virtually irrelevant careers:
Huh?
Everybody knows that Beyonce and Kelly rowland was the only two in the group to sing , So Kelly didn’t say anything but the truth
Im glad she’s out here hustling and what beautiful and iconic outcomes. Something about her sticks out she has a cool factor that I like about her. Its crazy that people say that they didn’t play there position but she’s telling you out her own mouth that they all knew their roles in the group. Now because of the all the rumors, time passing, new gens of fan, older fans, the incident between the girl has been blown out of proportion.
When they first came out everybody saw Beyoncé sing a majority of the songs but DC was more because Letoya LaTavia ane Kelly along with Bey had dope dances, cool style, songs were dope and it really was a team effort and I think a lot Fans I mentioned don’t realize how important it was for Latavia to be bass or Letoya sopranos and Kelly backing Bey cuz she did it so well that you don’t even know when Kelly was singing on the first two albums unless you had a good ear for music. (I was younger then just liked the music and the girls were hot too)
Also Wyclef should be and credited more for really giving DC their signature sound outside their blend as a four part harmony, the Fast singing which BEY gotta give her that made Hot but Listening to Kelly and Letoya solo music you hear a hint of that in some of their records but with their own original sound. Sorry for this letter lol
So proud of her for following her dreams, and respect the quality of her catalog when it comes to her Music/Film. Letoya has made a name for herself after DC, all you see on twitter is ” I didn’t know she was in DC”. She used that platform an succeeded to be one of the top African American actresses (From the Rough movie)(single ladies)(HBO Ballers co-star THe Rock). Now the fans are waiting on music, we don’t go on album sales just Quality work.
I respect her, she never quit the industry like the other 2 girls
Beautiful pic!!!!! She was always my Fav DC member, love that she found her lane in acting/singing. She might not have the fame as sum but she walking in the footprints of some of the greats. Lena Horne/ Dorothy Dandrige where both actresses first then singing. Letoya acting is putting her in the spotlight once everyone realize she can sing Live I believe her fame would go to the next level. Class & real Talent never goes out of style.
she was always my Fav, cant wait for her 3rd album (Until Then).
Cant wait for her 3rd album…..Until Then
yea wen is Until then coming out does any1 know
Yea wen does Until Then come out anyone know
I really really hope that she don’t allow herself to be dragged in that drama. She much stop allowing them to ask so much DC questions especially when its not related to her! Kelly was the one who made the comment so if she was wise direct them to Kelly. It funny how you said that everyone knew their position and that is why you-know-who is on top and everybody else is struggling- that is not forward thinking but stupidity.
I’ve always loved LeToya. I admire her work ethnic and talent. She’s so beautiful. I hope I can find this magazine to support her. Good luck on your future.
Also, about the insecurity thing: I see that for EVERY celebrity. Nsomi Campbell, Mariah Carey, Tyra Banks, Halle Berry, Janet Jackson, Johnny Depp, Brett Michaels, Rihanna, and more. I can’t name them all. A lot of celebs pretend to exude confidence, but it’s all an illusion. So people believe that being famous and rich takes away your problems and insecurities, but truly, as we all see, that’s not true. In fact, being famous only puts you under a magnifying glass for others to see your insecurities. Just a thought.
Naomi
