Almost one year removed from her self-titled debut LP, Zendaya Coleman has reportedly scored the lead role in ‘Lifetimes’s forthcoming ‘Aaliyah’ biopic, allegedly enlisted to play the ‘Are You That Somebody’ singer.
Full story below…
Necole Bitchie reports exclusively:
According to our sources, sweet faced singer/actress Zendaya Coleman has snagged the role of Aaliyah (who was affectionately known as “baby girl”) in a biopic that is set to debut on Lifetime later this year.
Back in September, Aaliyah’s uncle Barry Hankerson let the cat out of the bag that a biopic was in the works, and soon after, whispers of a casting call made their way online. BET host Keshia Chanté, who has been lobbying for the role for years, even alluded to her Facebook fans that she tried out for the part, but it was Zendaya who ended up coming out on top.
We are told the official announcement will be made this week and filming will begin in the next few weeks.
Represented by ‘Creative Artists Agency’, Coleman‘s nabbing of the role comes one year after she ended her three year run on Chris Thompson‘s ‘Shake It Up’, and after she committed to Disney‘s ‘Zapped’, set for release on June 27th 2014!
NO HUNTY, chile they would have been better off with keisha chante tbh…
I really hope rih geta to portray Milli vanilli would be so fitting
i have a feeling they made a mistake.Zendaya is cool and all but Keisha Chante should have gotten the role

They should have chosen Beyonce. I think her and Aaliyah have a lot in common.
Plus she did an amazing Job transforming into a 16 year old girl on her “Grown woman” video. She can do anything.
*Jaw drops to floor*
And he’s serious!
*bows to pray* Fix it Jesus!
Lol, K
Great choice. 🙂
I like Zendaya, but 1 she looks nothing like Aaliyah and secondly aaliyah was not light skinned tf
She can get a little tan for the role.
It’s not about getting “tanned” for a role. It’s about the black actress that this role could have gone to. The Film industry loves to whitewash black female characters, it’s disgusting! They did it with Nina Simone, they’re doing it with Lisa Turtle from Saved by the bell and now this crap!
I saw her in person and she was pretty light skinned.
Aaliyah was NOT light skin! She was more of a light brown skin complexion…
I know it’s not all about the look (i.e. KeKe Palmer as Chilli) BUT WTF? Theres no way I could look at her and believe I’m seeing Aaliyah. BTW IDC what you say, KeKe didn;t do it for me either.
Who is she and why is she playing baby girl?, she’s ugly, Aaliyah was one of the most beautiful women, she was gorgeous in person, a mess.
she’s not ugly
She’s awful looking, i google her already.
LMFAO! #dead
Poor Aaliyah.
zendaya is beyond gorgeous have you seen this girl fat fa.g? she is has her OWN hair btw
She’s horrible!
Stop calling God’s children ugly. I’m disappointed…
Would you say that Bin Laden wasn’t ugly?
Stop your reverse physiology! Like I said, you are not suppose to say things like that on this site. You are one of the best commentators. You are to uphold only positive & constructive conversations on this site amongst others. Not post & start ignrant, amateur convos of how ugly a little woman is. You know better… And far of a better commentator of this site. I would expect a comment like that from “Digger Bey” but not from you Paul.
Your expectations are very high when it comes to me, i’m not perfect.
No, you are not perfect. But, you KNOW better. Than to write some stupid, immature s*** like calling a cute woman AT BEST ugly.
.
Also, you should be flattered that I hold you at such high regardes. Many on this piece of s*** site do… I still make love to you in my dreams lol
What?! Zendaya may not look like Liyah but she ain’t ugly!
Tan her darker for the role of Aaliyah PPPPPPPPPLLLLEEASSEEE!
aaliyah is not of latin descent, she was a red bone, not a yellow bone
Zendaya is mixed black not Latin but I agree with what you said.
Tan her darker? Nah! Just get a black actress to play the role!! SMH
you know its a fa.g when they say someone whoa gorgeous is ugly f**.s are always hating girls cus they want to be them @suicideblonde why dont you do yourself a fav and kill yo ugly ass
That was unnecessary of you to say…
omg lol
@Sleazy
Just like women can say a man is ugly, a man can say a woman is ugly too, sorry if you’re a fan of that thing, i didn’t know who she was nor that she has fans, get well soon.
So true. I agree.
im here for this but is Zendaya going to be comfortable sleeping with a older guy? wonder whos playing Rkelly
I see nothing wrong with it yall needa chill.
I like Zendaya, but idk it’s just something about her that screams Ciara and not Aaliyah. But I guess we can’t judge until we see the film cuz I remember when people was reading lil mama for fifth before the tlc movie but loved her afterwards
Deaaaaath. I feel bad for the person having to play creepy R.Kelly
This is off topic, but OMG Rihanna looks GORGEOUS in your avi!
She’s a mix between Kat Deluna and Cassie. She has nothing in common with Aaliyah. A mess.
Do we REALLY need to see an Aaliyah movie?… I think this & Whitney’s movies are unnecessary. Especially, if their not gonna be shown on HBO or ShowTime…
.
.
Miss Houston’s movie needs to be on HBO.
@suicideblondie
She’s from Disney and she’s the one that songs that sing replay
http://youtube.com/watch?v=cyLE48i4XY0
Never heard that song before, horrible music too.
Yall can say what yall want, but someone else could have gotten this role. Lets get it straight. I loooooooove loooooove loooove Zendaya, but I grew up to Aaliyah and I am not comfortable with her playing this role. They don’t need to appeal to a younger crowd they need to appeal to the people who have grown with Aaliyah. Zendaya is like 12 (17 really) . Zendaya is gorgeous and her hair is always laid…I was rooting for Tiffany Evans or Keshia Chante.
An Aaliyah biopic? Lol snoozefest!!!
YES. i been saying zendaya about to blow up. Great dancer. Super talented.
I think ths is th first post a bout Zendaya on this blog cuz TGJ is usually kind of behind on new R&B artists but check out her Go CRAZY live performance.
Zendaya has IT.
Also. for all the people say ing she is biracial… Zendaya is MORE PROUD of her African AMerican heritage than 90% of fully black artists out there.
Chrck out her instagram. SHe does not shy away from ehr heritage. Also. she LOVES Aliyah
Noooooo
Aaliyah was everything, I could only imagine what she wouldn’t became had it not been for that tragic accident.

Im NOT here for this choice!!!
They should have kept looking and auditioning….. Zendaya is cute, but she aint it!
–
Aaliyah was subtle, a bit dark and mysterious…. Zendaya just doesnt give me Baby Girl….. NOPE, IM PISSED!!!
–
-\BYE
i will give it a chance cause ppl thought lil mama would be bad in the TLC movie … but she was not that light
I like Zendaya because she stans for both of my favs (MJ & Bey) but No Gawd hunny! I wanted Kiesha Chante to play baby girl 🙁 smh……
How can they try to do a movie about Aaliyah but not have her family (mom & brother) give the ok?…This industry is filth!!
I’m sorry Zendaya doesn’t look like The L-I-Y-A-H. I think Keisha Chante would have been the best choice. Still wishing her success with the movie though.
I don’t see anything wrong with her portraying Aaliyah. It’s very rare that producers will find someone who looks exactly like the person they’re portraying. the only time it was almost an identical match was Jamie Foxx as Ray Charles. but tbh, do we really need an Aaliyah biopic, even on HBO? I was always a fan of Baby Girl but she was not a global superstar. Most of her success was in the US, UK, France, Canada, Germany, Japan and Korea. Tbh, this movie could’ve gotten made for BET, MTV or vH1 and I’ve would’ve been satisfied. But anyway, congrats Zendaya
