Did they start to show it THAT early? That’s the same stunt they pulled with ‘The Last Exorcism.’ They began to show it the evening/night of the 26th. That would be the Thursday and NOT the Friday that ‘Takers’ premiered. That gave ‘Exorcism’ a $750,000 head start! Man, I’m telling you, Hollywood is like…just FULL of “games-and-trickery..!”
Never-the-less, ‘Takers’ went #1 and even today, it’s per/theater earnings average is over $5K, which is the HIGHEST of any movie, currently now in “wide release..!” Oh, and they’re reporting the budget incorrectly, it’s ONLY $20-Million, NOT the $32-they now report. Funny, when ‘Exorcist’ was leading, they reported ‘Takers’ budget at $20-Million, but now, since it’s the undisputed #1(?), they’re slowly inflating it – first it was 20, then 30, and now(?) $32-Million. You know, I was wondering about the budget info change. I thought I was imagining things. It WAS $20 million before it was “declared” #1. I remember when I saw the movie on opening night and TI was saying in the movie, how much the heist was gonna be worth. When he said 20-30 mill, in my head I was thinking that that was more than what it cost them to MAKE the movie.
Suddenly, after all the joyful Exorcism is #1 headlines had to change (some of them STILL haven’t), the production budget changed too. I even posted on a few blogs that they were lying about the total. There is a reason for this! They don’t want more of us to “get ideas”.
I’m so happy for these guys and this on on FEWER screens than EVERY SINGLE NEW MOVIE OUT, even the pushed back Drew Barrymore film is on 3030 screens (almost 1,000 fewer)! This movie will continue to do well over the next few weeks, if only because of it’s broad, yet unforced, appeal. Once it goes international…I predict this movie making at LEAST 100 mill.
Will the success of this movie p*** off a lot of people? Yes
Will it plant some “what if” seeds in the minds of aspiring minority writers/filmmakers? YES
Will this give someone a rebuttal when they want to make a film and are told “movies LIKE THAT aren’t profitable”? YES

T.I’s efforts opening weekend were inspirational. It was like…”You know what? White Hollywood is hating on us, a lot of white bloggers (and some of our own) are hating on us, WE ARE TAKING ANOTHER ROUTE! They can’t stop me from directly reaching the people and telling them how important this is. They can’t stop me from asking people to support. I’m doing this MY way”. I saw those videos and I saw how tired he looked, but he was HUSTLING. I also felt like they had to have Chris a little less visible that weekend, so that haters couldn’t use it as a distraction (which pissed me off) . It also pissed me off that Dillon wasn’t helping with promotion. It led me to think that he thought SO LITTLE of the producers, potential, etc that he didn’t make a deal to get anything off the back end. All of that, is what made me stand on “Twitter guard” that weekend. I was like “If I could try to reply to everyone I see that questions if they should see it, what they should see, if they should get it on bootleg, if they should see it this week or next, if they should try to get it online, etc”…I was doing my part . Just like so many OLD (70s,etc) people who went to support b/c they saw the significance of some things.

The film has a February 19, 2010 release date. According to BoxOfficeMojo the film had a budget of $20 million. With a February release date and that all-star cast, it wouldn’t be surprising if this film can’t even make that money back.

… But that STILL doesn't answer just how he came up with that $60-Million production cost. My ONLY guess, is that he considers the difference between 60 and 32 ($60M-$32M=$28M) to be the marketing/promotion cost! There is NO WAY on God's Green-Earth and under his Sun-lit Sky, that 'Takers' was promo-ed for $28-Million – NO WAY!! Tell me, how many times did YOU see 'Takers' commercials ran on TV? I saw takers posters/blog ads, but I didn't see any TV ads!
K, they JUST updated boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/, now they're saying that "The American" and 'Machete' were both made for $20-Million. but deadline.com said it was made for $25-Million. Let's see if THOSE budgets incrementally creep-upwards! Remember, on Aug 27th, both you and I, while commenting on this very blog, SAW on boxofficemojo that 'Takers' had cost $20-Million. I saw a bunch of TV ads for all the other films, but NOT for 'Takers'.

Someone told me that movies need to make at lease double their production budget to truly be profitable. The thing is, I dont see them putting this “formula” on other movies.
Also, you may have posted this already, but here’s the AMerican opening on Wed updated confession.
• Clooney’s The American ($13.1 million Friday-Sunday; $16.4 million Friday-Monday) needed the grown-up vote to win—and it got it. Nearly 90 percent of the opening-weekend audience was age 25 or older. Since opening last Wednesday, the thriller is at $19.5 million overall—a good great bit of business for a $20 million movie.
