Robin Thicke and Pharell Williams have been dealt another blow in their ongoing legal battle with Marvin Gaye’s family.
Good news for the latter below….
The creative duo were accused of copying Gaye’s ‘Got To Give It Up’ to create their smash hit jam ‘Blurred Lines’ and have been ordered to cough up $5.3 million for the alleged deed.
Today, efforts to kill the ruling were thwarted by Judge Milan Smith who argued that there was “not an absolute absence of evidence” of similarity between the jams.
Gaye’s family can now look forward to a substantial piece of the song’s publishing pie for eternity. A pie, as they’re undoubtedly aware of it, that has been baked with the heat of the 10 million units the song has sold worldwide to date.
Williams and Thicke are yet to respond to this development.
His family is hungry……
You must be a thief as well. What’s right is right!
EXACTLY SAME SONG & STYLE!!
Well Bruno Mars is a thief too then for making the same style music as Earth Wind and fire, James Brown, The Gap Band, Prince, Bobby Brown, and Michael Jackson. Oh wait the Gap Band already sued him and Mark Ronson for stealing and the Gap Band won the suit but nobody is talking about it.
If by hungry you mean RIGHT, then so be it. Pharrell’s sellout ass & that culture vulture Robin Thicke know damn well they stole that song. His white privilege wont help him here.
You a snake just like Pharrell & Robin. Pay up or get locked up! #NuffSaid
The Gaye estate shouldn’t have ever been awarded a dime. The percussion similarities are there, but there’s no outright copyright infringement. I think this case sets a dangerous precedent.
Wrong. You are clearly tone deaf and brainwashed by white privilege. That song is a carbon copy of Marvin’s classic note for note, and his family is due their share of the profits. Sorry, you don’t get a pass for blatant plagiarism just because you changed a guitar lick or added a few lyrics. Its still the same car even if it has different cheaper wheels on it.
I disagree, I think it will set a precedence that will encourage originality and discourage copying. The producers were not only inspired by Gaye’s song, they simply altered it to produce a slightly different sound. I’m glad they did not get away with it. When I first heard “Blurred Lines” I automatically assumed it contained a legally acquired sampling of “Got To Give It Up.” The use of the song is obvious. Justice was served in this case.
SMH & Anne, you are both wrong.

I fully concur with the dissenting judge’s opinion, including how it hurts the Gaye estate itself.
