Last summer, ‘Shut Up’ rapper Trick Daddy was told to follow his own advice by legions of Beyonce fans (affectionately called the #Beyhive) following controversial comments he made about the diva’s singing ability.
“Beyoncé don’t write music and barely can sing her motherf*ckin’ self,” he said during a now-infamous Clubhouse chat (as we reported here).
Only making matters worse over the weeks that followed, Trick (born Maurice Young) incited further controversy over his statement by attempting to clarify the difference between ‘singing’ and ‘sangin.’
“To me a real singer is a Stephanie Mills, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Alicia Keys, or Adele. To me, a singer is somebody who can go to church and give you the word. ‘Singing’ and ‘sangin are two different things,” he shared.
And though the flames from that firestorm of backlash had cooled, Young – thanks to quizzing from DJs at ‘The Breakfast Club’ a year later (April 14) – reignited them by doubling down on his polarizing stance.

When DJ Envy asked Trick to clarify his thoughts about Beyonce’s vocal prowess (at the 35:30 mark in the video above), the ‘Love & Hip Hop’ star responded:
“Here’s the thing, I wasn’t saying that Beyoncé can’t sing. Because I’ve known Beyoncé since they were 15 [or] 16. … I have a lot of love and respect [for her]. Beyoncé is a hell of an entertainer, but when I put singers in a category, I’m talking about Whitney Houston … Adele … Shirley Murdock … Stephanie Mills … Jennifer Hudson.”
His feelings about limited vocal ability didn’t stop with Bey, however. He weighed in others of this generation’s female talents.
“Out of the 10 female R&B singers that came out in the last five years, five of them sound alike. … The HER’s, SZA, Jhene Aiko, I can close my eyes and not know who they are. That don’t mean that I don’t like them, that don’t mean I don’t like their talent, but if I had to a pull a top 10 [or] a top five, I wouldn’t mention them.”

His reiteration of that opinion – alongside statements about gonorrhea, gay rights, Kevin Hart not being funny, and more – made the entire interview a ‘must see.’

She’s an awesome singer. I remember back when people thought she use to over sing everything lol ( see the ‘emotions’ Madtv skit ) she doesn’t really show it off the way she did back in destiny’s child.
But ‘I care’ is one of her best solo vocal performances.

She can fill the stadiums in the same way of Janet Jackson, who also is not a singers singer, but she’s still an icon. Beyonce stands on her shoulders. She’s visually beautiful, and can rock any stage, but to stand flat footed and sing with the likes of Whitney, Mariah, Jennifer Hudson, or even Fantasia is a no. They will blow her away vocally any day. But, they are different entertainers. Aretha was a different entertainer from Tina Turner, but both were spectacular. This is kind of the same thing.
