Nielsen SoundScan report that despite the popularity of online music providers such as Itunes, physical copies of albums saw an impressive increase from 153.9 million last year to 155.million this year, even before the chart year has ended.
This is thanks to new releases by Pop songbirds Lady GaGa and Adele who broke a number of sales records this year with their respective LP’s ‘Born This Way’ and ‘21‘.
Rap sensation Nicki Minaj also contributed a great deal to US sales, as her debut project ‘Pink Friday’ was confirmed as being the third highest selling album of the year to be released by a female artist so far, with 609,000 copies sold between the months of January to July.
This currently makes her the highest selling rapper so far this year and the highest selling female rapper this decade.
Shifting 2,517,000 copies in the space of six months, Adele contributed the most to the sales increase with ’21’ closely followed by GaGa’s ‘Born This Way’ which has sold 1,540,000 in just two months.
These sales make Lady GaGa, Adele and Nicki Minaj the highest selling female artists of 2011 to date.
Will Beyonce‘s ‘4′ that trumps the records currently held by her chart rivals when the Year-End figures are released in a few months time?
Either way, it seems that even before the year has ended 2011 has already become one year music lovers will be sure to never forget.

People stay on the Amazon thing about Gaga. *Sigh*. Statistically, she still sold 660,000 without Amazon, which is clearly still very high for first week sales in this day and age. So even if you want to argue that her 1.1million albums that she sold in the first week isn’t completely true, she STILL went over Gold in one week. And the reason Amazon chose Gaga to promote their Cloud Service is because of her popularity and large fan base. If they had chosen another artist, that artist still wouldn’t have grossed as high as Gaga. And Rater R was sold for 99 cents for a while as well and still flopped, no shade to Rihanna.
Anyway, I think Adele will move the most copies, she’s ahead by an entire million compared to Gaga and statistically sells 100,000 EVERY week on average, while Gaga isn’t selling that high at all. Once she comes back in the U.S., promotes, and drops her 4th single, sales may increase. I honestly don’t know who is still buying ’21’ but congrats to Adele’s success. Beyonce’s figures are impressive too, because selling 313,000 with little U.S. promo and no top 20 Hot 100 single while Katy and Rihanna had 2 #1s before their album dropped yet only sold 100+k and 207k says a lot for Bey, but I don’t think she’ll finish first. Once she starts doing U.S. promo again, though, her numbers will increase. And Katy and Rihanna seem stuck at 1.3 & 1.4 million albums sold right now, so Bey may pass that.
And Nicki’s fire really is fading. Her first album was off hype, and it’s dying now that beef has calmed down, but as she’s on tour promoting with Britney, some of Britney’s fanbase may decide to buy her album after hearing her at the concert and that could very well increase sales for her.
So right now I’ll say ’21’ will finish first, then “BTW’, then ‘4’.

The main reason Gaga’s sales dropped in the following weeks after BTW was released is because the initial hype died down. Since it’s release, where has Gaga been, overseas throughout Europe and Asia promoting BTW which is why it’s selling hundreds of thousdands of copies a week in Asian and European countries, The Edge of Glory is performing much much better overseas because she’s promoting it overseas. There is a reason in under 2 months, Gaga has already outsold Nicki Minaj, Britney Spears, Rihanna and Katy Perry. The only b**** f****** with Gaga’s sales this year are Adele. Even Beyonce, who is the top female of this generation will not match the success of Born This Way with 4. 4 may sell around 1.5 – 2 million in the US and around 4-5 million WW, which is still pretty high, but by that time, 21 will probably have topped 12.5 million and BTW will have topped 10 million. To the Nicki Minaj fans, Pink Friday is at 1.4 million in the US and only 1.65 million WW, Missy and Kim have had album outsell that, so please sit. Pink Friday’s success is 50% hype and 50% imaging. Nicki as being and still is being promoted as the Lady Gaga of Hip-Hop. Rihanna and Katy are still singles artists. How can have every single off your album reach the top WW and they only sell 1.6 million in the US and 3.5 million WW for Teenage Dream and 1.3 million in the US and 4.4 million WW for Loud. BTW has already topped 4 million and by the end of the year, it’ll be at 10 million. So Gaga and Adele will run the charts in 2011 and the first few months of 2012.

I don’t understand why Nicki made this list. She’s a rapper. I don’t really consider her a singer cuz she can’t sing. Pink Friday wasn’t bad just not a GREAT album like loud.

Antonio f.cking @ss,nicki album don’t even have one year in,and you talking about Kim and Missy album that have bin around for years selling, man you ignorant people never seize to amaze me,Nicki minaj is doing pretty well for the short time she bin around for a female rapper in this time and age she is doing pretty good,her album and singles is platinum+and is still selling,Nicki isn’t a heavy hitter as Gaga and Adele,but she sure doing her thing and she f.cking Deserved her spot up there she contributed to that 1% too like everyone else,so i dont know who the hell are you to say nay.
Adele is unstoppable, but Gaga can catch her if she releases a new hot single the interest in the album will heat up again. Lady Gaga has the second best selling album of the year so far and she did that in less than a month, the year hasn’t ended yet. 😉
It’s been a great year for music with amazing album releases by so many talented acts: Gaga, Adele, Beyonce, Nicki, Bon Iver, Jill Scott… And we still have 5 months left for more great music to come!

Adele’s “21” has been out for 6mos, she should be on the list, no touring, dumb videos, she is an actually artist with hella talent!! no gimmicks like selling her album for .99, no shade to GAGA i love her, Sickie been out damn near a year, she just ought to have sold some albums, plus her deluxe re-release, give me a break
